: Upgrading my LX system, some questions
mrrippey 09-30-2004, 08:43 PM Hey everyone,
Looks like I am going to order my Infinity 6000si or 62.5i soon with a Kenwood KDC-MP425 head unit. Seems like many of you have had great success with the Infinity's (seems like the 62.5i are better quality but harder to install).
My question is if I wanted to install the Infinti 1001T tweeters, what else do I need? I was thinking about getting a 4-way amp with this setup but really dont know where the tweeter connects to.
By the way, I am not installing anything, well maybe the speakers since I think I cant mess that up but everything else I will have a shop do. I just want to get the equipment myself so I know I can get the best deal.
Hopefully I can get this all ordered and installed next week. After that, entertainment for my kids in back; 12" screen and PS2.

Good luck getting an installation in a week and be prepared to spend almost $200 if you go to a "popular" stereo place. As for the back seat entertainment system...Your E doesn't have windows?

I know a person that wants to do my E for promotion of his shop. I just have to get the parts. As for the windows, the kids look out for 20 minutes, then ask me to go faster as they are bored. Gameboy is boring and they read for about 30 minutes as well.

Sheesh Dan, a little bitter today?
LEGO MY E 10-01-2004, 10:47 PM When I was a kid we had only a stick to play with. And if we complained, my Mom would smack me in the face while driving down the freeway!
No, the only entertainment I had was fighting with my sister about the "Imaginary Line" that ran down the middle of our seat! Oh, and the occasion when I would sit in the middle of the rear seat and crowd the space between the front seats! That was real "Safe" whenever our vehicle came to a sudden stop! Of course, that metal dash would usually brake the impact before the windshield did!
Seriously, our kids are too damned spoiled. My 3yr and 5yr old girls have a computer, television, and vcr in their bedroom. I own a Playstation2, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Gameboy Advanced SP, and Nintendo 64. I suscribe to HDTV cable television programming (for the KIDS, of course!). CD's and DVD's up the wazzoo, Stereo in every room (let's just say I'm glad I don't live in an apartment anymore!!), games galore! And what do my girls want to do? Go outside and play with the fallen apples on the ground!!! Ungrateful little %$#$%... um... sweethearts!!
Of course, having all this $hi... er... stuff has nothing to do with the fact that LEGO had a stick to play with as a kid!
(LEGO was too expensive... yep! I got Mega Bloks!)
mrrippey 10-02-2004, 07:41 AM well consider this, my 6 and 9 yr olds have their own iMac with wireless network, all the game modules (on different tv's around the house) gameboys in the car and now with the E, have a place to take a nap on my long drives. Funny since they asked since it is so big inside, can a tv fit so they can play ps2 there. They thought it would be "cool." This from my 6yr old.
That being said, how do I connect new tweeters to my system? Infinity 6002si all around, new head unit and Infinfty 1001T tweeters, do I need anything else? If I can get some entera money, maybe a 4-channel amp.

Green Goblin 10-06-2004, 09:42 AM hey rippey,
i'm doing a similar upgrade in my LX. i've been
reading up, and here's how i *think* it works:
if you get a separate amp (which you should)
you'll power the back two speakers w/ two channels
from the amp. if you go w/ the 6002si's in the front,
plus the 1001T tweeters, you'll need 2 channels from
the amp to power the door speakers, and 2 more channels
to power the tweeters=6 channel amp. now...
if you were to go w/ components in the front, you'd have
the tweeter and door speaker wired to a crossover, and each
crossover would be powered by a channel from the amp.
this way, you'd only need a 4 channel amp instead of a six
channel amp. and in theory, your system would sound better
w/ components, too.
honestly, i'm very new to all of this myself, so i'm hoping that someone
will post after me to confirm this... or not : )
the tricky thing that i have not figured out yet is:
how does one install the wiring for the tweeters and/or how difficult is
it? i thought that the wiring would just be in there w/ no tweeters,
but i checked. there is definitely NO tweeter wiring in the A pillars for
the LX...
another thought:
i'm wondering if you can power the back speakers from the head unit,
and the front speakers from an amp. my thinking is that the back speakers
don't need to be a huge part of the sound... just filler... so they won't need
a ton of power. but once you take advantage of the head unit's pre amp out
(to send signal to the amp for the front speakers),
does that disable the head unit's amp?
all for now...
mrrippey 10-06-2004, 01:17 PM Green Goblin,
great information and it makes alot of sense. Now the trick is if I go with component speakers, which ones fit without messing with the front door too mcuh. It definitly seems like a cleaner installation.
Back to the search....well while I am figuring this out, I am going to get Falken rims...

Green Goblin 10-06-2004, 01:29 PM well, as i understand it, it's not going to any more difficult to
put 2 way speakers in the door plus tweeters in the A pillars
than it would be to use components. tweeters will take up the
same space in both cases, and if anything, you'd need more
room for the 2 way speakers since their "tweeter" will be
protruding from the cone. if you decided to ultimately go
with 2 way speakers instead of components, i think any of the
infinity's that you mentioned (652i, 6002i, etc.) will fit fine,
based on many of the threads in this forum. the trick is going
to be wiring for the tweeters. i still have not found any thread
on this forum or any other that discusses wiring an LX or DX
for tweeters...
anyone?
Will Albers 10-06-2004, 01:35 PM Bah, tweeters offer such little resistnce that you can just run them in parallel and not run into an issue with drawing too much current. In fact, most tweeters come with a cap on them that starts to cut off low level frequencies, but I would bet a natural roll off would suffice...
So basically there are three options...
1) Buy a component set which comes with a woofer only for the doors, a cross over and a seperate mounted tweeter. In this case, you will need to run new speaker cables to the door speakers and to the tweeter location. Mount the xover under the dash on the left and right side and zip tie them up where you wont kick them around. Next you need to run a set of speaker wire from the new radio to the xovers and voila, you're set to go! I recommend this option by the way...
Pros: Better sound quality
Cons: Cost, difficulty of install, imaging/staging is awkward with such large seperation between mids and tweets.
2) A cheaper alternative is to run a decent coaxial speaker (tweater and mid range all in one) in the doors using the factory wiring. Purchase a second set of tweeters (Try to match the coaxial tweeters) and mount them in the A pillars. There is no crossover in this configuration and the natural roll off of the upper tweeters should help improve staging, but at the cost of 3db more treble (means you will want to back the treble down a lil on the deck). In this configuration, just use the stock wiring for the door run a new wire from the head unit to the A pillar tweeters. Run everything in parallel.
Pros: Improved sound quality, better staging. Ease of install. Cheapest alternative.
Cons: Chances of cancellation, LOADS of treble, can mess with imaging.
3) Install 5.25 seperates in the A pillar with custom pods. Run them off of an external amp with gobs of juice.
Pros: Best imaging and sound quality you are going to achieve without time delay.
Cons: EXTREMELY difficult to install, PRICEY!
So which are you contemplating?
mrrippey 10-07-2004, 08:43 AM Get four 6002si for the doors, no tweeters on the A pillars, get a 4 channel amp and a decent head unit which can play mp3's. If I get a flip down TV, I will just connect it to the PS2 in the back.
I think this is going to be the cheapest (and easiest) way to upgrade the sound and everyone in the box will be happy.
