: Nav displays and cold weather
Genom 10-22-2004, 11:21 PM I'm beginning to look into an Eclipse AVN 2454 Nav unit, but what if any concerns should I have with the display and cold weather? I'm here in the New England area and the winters can be real cold...like last year when there was a two/three week stretch of 20 degree highs and 8 degree lows. Is this a genuine concern? I wanted to ask here for some real world advice before I ask Eclipse and possibly get the usual sales ploy " Oh, yeah, it'll be fine whether you're in the Arctic or on the surface of the Sun! ".

LMAO!! That sounds EXACTLY like a sales ploy to me! ;) But they could've started by offering the moon first!
(LEGO has no idea what the Eclipse Nav unit is, but felt compelled to add to his post count nonetheless!)

You need not be worried. Eclipse stands behind their products when purchased from an authorized dealer so you could always get it replaced if you had any problems but you won't.
Keep in mind that Eclipse's main market is Japan which actually has a very similar climate as New England. Summers are similar and winter months can become quite cold since parts of Japan are on the same latitude as Siberia!
My point is that the design tolerances should be similar and you should probably not be concerned.
BriBoy01 10-23-2004, 10:01 AM Perhaps somewhere in the manual it lists it operating temperature range?

i am up in the air on that unit for the avic n1
ONLY thing i like the eclipse more for is that its a double din unit and no flip up....
Empire 10-24-2004, 02:31 PM I have the similar Kenwood DDX7015 unit with nav.
I haven't experienced anything as low as in the 20's yet with it , maybe 30's so far but the display and it's touchscreen controls worked just fine. Glancing thru the manual I dind't see any mention of operation in low temperatures but it did say the Kenwood unit has an automatic safety shut off feature if the unit ever reaches over 140 degrees.
Genom 10-24-2004, 03:01 PM I was going to ask you about the Kenwood, Empire...I've been looking at that model as well plus I found a dealer nearby that I can go and look it over in person. ( I haven't been able to find a local dealer for the Eclipse ). Anyone else live in the northeast with an LCD screen of some sort in their vehicle?

i had tv's in my first civic in 01 and I out in staten island ny and never had any problems with them freezing or damage
i also had a problem finding an eclipse dealer
hit me up on AIM if you wannna chat
i might have a connection on the AVIC if your interested and i am ordering soon
lemme know
Genom 10-24-2004, 06:28 PM Staten Island is only about 60 some-odd miles west of me and if you hadn't any problems with tv's in your Civic, that's all the reinforcement I need.
Thanks for the AVIC offer, but I'm just shopping around at the moment ( got a bunch of things to do with the house )
eMass 10-24-2004, 09:27 PM I have an Avic N1 in my wifes car - LOVE it!
Empire 10-24-2004, 10:59 PM I was going to ask you about the Kenwood, Empire...I've been looking at that model as well....
I'm extremely happy with the Kenwood unit. From what I've seen of the Eclipse model on their site impresses me also. Judging by the nav screenshots, it appears to be near identical to the Kenwood unit, menus, icons and layout are pretty much the same.
Once I heard the Rosen double din flush mount display model was discontinued I stumbled across the DDX7015. After ordering it I found out about the Eclipse model. Both look great but since I have an authorized Kenwood Excelon dealer/installer less than a mile from the house it worked out better for me.
I love th AVIC N1 also it was just that I really didn't want a flip-out screen and preferred the more stock appearance of an in-dash display.

KENWOOD P-NAV7015 DDX7015 + KNA-DV4100 NAVIGATION
that one?
Empire 10-25-2004, 07:53 PM Yep that's them.
I bought the player and nav at seperate times but Kenwood does make their 4100 nav unit available with a few of their touchscreen head units as a 2-pack.
Genom 10-25-2004, 08:01 PM I just did a little research and managed to find a PYLE double din cd/dvd player and its spec sheet. The spec sheet says its operating temp can go down to -10 Celsius ( 14 Fahrenheit ) and storage temp down to -30 Celsius ( -22 Fahrenheit ). I guess if that POS is claimed to be able to withstand those temps, the AVIC-N1, Kenwood DDX7015 and the Eclipse ANV 2454 should be good to go...now I just need to choose one.
Yeah, from what I hear PYLE is NG...turns out there is an exact system by the name CASKA, from China no less...it just has a different name plastered on the front.

PYLE is the Kia of car audio... 8)
Genom 11-02-2004, 07:30 PM Well if Pyle is the Kia of car audio, then I guess the Caska is the Yugo.

Exactly ;) 8)
Empire 11-16-2004, 10:54 PM Well I finally RTFM :D to get the specifications for both the Kenwood indash and the nav unit.
The actual indash touchscreen headunit has an operational temperature range of -10 to 60 degrees celsius (-22F & 140F) and the nav unit ranges pretty much the exact same. I'm sure the AVIC ranges around that also. So unless you're watching a DVD while imbedded in an iceberg or well, if the interior is over 140F I'd be worried more about the AC working, then you shouldn't have any problems operating the system.
hownowcb 11-16-2004, 11:25 PM All you pansy-assed guys -- do you have any idea what winter actually is? -22 Fahrenheit isn't all that unusual here in winter. It's not as if it's that temperature for extended periods, but it's certainly not uncommon for a morning low temp. I know, my Scandinavian ancestors were no smarter than I appear to be. There are decidedly warmer places to spend the winter. The scenery here just reminded those poor bastards so much of home they couldn't bear to leave. Which leaves me with no excuse whatsoever. But then again, being pretty much stuck here as a "lifer", I don't need no stinkin' GPS navigation to find my way around these parts in the frost either.
(But as I PM'd somebody tonight, though, I've had serious call for GPS in the fog on a river in my powerboat in the summer!!)

i wonder what the GPS maps in Minnesota look like.....
prob tree's and tree's and points of interests are bigger tree's
TopSpd90MPH 11-17-2004, 08:01 AM As with most LCDs, it will be dim on a cold morning. I've had an Alpine in-dash monitor in one of my previous cars. It just takes a few min for the screen to warm up then the LCD becomes crisper.
Same effect when you leave a laptop in a car overnight in chilly temps...but the LCD in a touchscreen headunit has quicker warmup.
hownowcb 11-17-2004, 06:01 PM Reminds me of a story from some of my sailing buddies. They were preparing a 40' Beneteau for the Trans-Superior race one fine, dark July night when GPS was relatively new and still had the governmental "fudge factor" handicapping it. They were comparing readings taken from the GPS with readings from the LORAN that had been on the boat for years. They got so busy arguing about which one was more accurate, that it was quite a rude awakening to hear the frantic shout, "TREES!" from the guy on the bow watch! Ran that puppy aground, they did!
Luckily no harm was done to anything other than egos, but it was obviously before the current graphic displays we take for granted now, or someone would have noticed a shoreline rapidly closing on the display! Wouldn't you think?
So, yeah, even though those trees were technically on an island in Wisconsin, it's safe to say we have plenty of trees, in plenty of (sometimes unexpected) places!
lars161 11-17-2004, 11:41 PM Here at acura Our customer's complain that the Navi touch screen doen't react well when really cold. And sometimes they won't display until warm.
They are made by either alpine or pioneer, usually pioneer.
