: Does Yakima fairing interfere with kayak saddles/roof box?
I have just transferred over our old Yakima rack to the E. Great fit with the control tower mounts!
I know the fairing works to cut down noise but how well does it fit when other accessories are attached? I use a ski box in the winter and 2 sets of kayak saddles in the summer. It looks like the mounts for the fairing might get in the way of the attachment points for the accessories.
Does it make any difference to the fit of accessories if you use the 38" fairing v the 44" one? I know the 44" fits all the way accross but the dealer recommended the 38" one.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
paulj 11-10-2004, 12:35 AM You might not need the fairing with these other attachments in place. I think wind noise, especially whistling is most likely on bare bars.
The fairing mounts on fairly long arms, so you should be able to fit most other brackets in the space between the bar and fairing.
Since most attachments are half the bar length or less wide, you probably can juggle their placement to fit with the fairing's attachement points. This may be harder if you fill the bars with accessories, but then you probably have less need for the fairing.
It is not that hard to make your own fairing. I made one out of 2" wide aluminum and a couple of generic Yakima bar mounts. Especially when dealing with whistling, the fairing just needs to alter the air flow, not smooth it out completely.

blackdog1 11-10-2004, 06:26 AM I can't speak for the kayak saddles but when I travel I attach a Thule Evolution Box without any problems. I have the 44" fairing by the way.
zgelem 11-10-2004, 08:24 AM the fairing itself will not interfere with the cargo box or boat mounts.
however, the fairing has specific mounting points on it, so that it sits centered on the roof.
when you consider that the fairing has a stronghold on the front bar real estate, it may interfere with where you can mount the box, and the boat mounts, which in turn, may prevent you from carrying all your goodies.
truthfully, a fairing is not needed with a cargo box. i recommend a fairing for q-tower applications or thule aero feet applications, since these racks are most often associated with wind noise, since the front bar sits about 7 inches from the top of the windshield.

Thanks for the quick responses. I will go with a fairing for those times when I don't have the box or saddles installed. I appreciate your advice about making your own fairing Paulj but I have already chewed up my hands enough this first week with the E (installing grill guard, bug deflector, roof rack) so I'll get a ready made one!
I'm going to go with the 44" length, from the pictures in other threads it appears to fit better that the 38" one- the feet of the longer fairing seem to all sit in the channels on the roof whereas they don't wth the shorter model. Wonder why Yakima recommends the shorter one?
SeattleE 11-10-2004, 02:30 PM Thule says to use the shorter fairing also...I've got the longer one that just fits between the mounts on either edge of the roof.
I have fount that the only time I have trouble is when I try to mount my kayak saddles on one side with my box already on the other side. Other than that, I can move things around enough to fit it all on at the same time.
On the other hand, I only just put the fairing back on after having it off for 6 months...

Was it one of the things you found when you cleaned out the garage?
:P
SeattleE 11-10-2004, 04:29 PM No, I actually knew where the fairing was...just didn't want it... 8)

This has been answered above, but I'll add my 2 cents.... There's no interference with other gear vertically, and I haven't found the fairing's four mount clips to be in the way of my other gear's mounts either, I've been able to work around them.
There are some pics of my E loaded up with fairing, box, and kayak saddles here (http://www.red-tail.net/e/roadtrip/). Nothing really close up, but you get the idea.
