Elemen-O-P 11-24-2004, 09:59 PM I'm glad to see some serious "advance planning". Seeing as how hectic my schedule can get, its nice to be able to write this on the calendar and hope that nothing even remotely as important as an E meet, comes up.
Theelements 11-24-2004, 10:15 PM Thanks for taking intrest in this meet. WE dont have a definate date but i hope to have one set up by christmas or so.... if you are interestered and you know youre available on some weekend in April or May please post it here, AIM me or PM me. thanks
MikeQBF 11-24-2004, 10:16 PM Geez. El Mirage. That's home - I grew-up in Lancaster. I'm noting this on our calendar, although at the rate things are going we may still be in mid-move. Today's snow was yet another setback.
Just bear in mind that March is the tail of the "rainy season" (if you want to call it that) in Antelope Valley. So the "dry lake" may be a humongous mud flat.
Theelements 11-24-2004, 10:34 PM well mike it seems like you know the area well..... when is the best time to go. ive been riding ( Motorcycles) there for about 10 years, so i kno the weather well, it seems like april& may are the best times.
MikeQBF 11-24-2004, 11:33 PM Yep - April and May are the nice times of the year. The winds usually calm down 'round the first week of April. I have a fondness for late June, tho'. Your skin gets all prickly from the extra-low humidity and 100-plus temps, and it recalls childhood memories of the scree-scree-scree of swamp coolers.
It does get uncomfortably windy there Nov-Mar. On a lark I once made a kite out of a 4x8 sheet of plywood - and flew it!
Theelements 11-24-2004, 11:59 PM oohhh yes the wind..... it does get very windy and very dusty there... so do you have any date that is the best time to go?
Sheniferous 11-25-2004, 01:13 AM hey i'm down! lemme know the details when they're finalized! I'll try and go... assuming i'm not filming or something. :)
biocube 11-25-2004, 01:41 PM well, its a long way off, but i'm a definate possibility!
Theelements 11-25-2004, 01:52 PM Sounds good you guys, when do you have a free Saturday or sunday from april - may? your help would be greatly appreciated...
I was thinking maybe April 23, 2005 or somthing like that... What do you guys think?
TopDog 11-25-2004, 09:13 PM Count me in for next year's event. Sounds like fun.
Theelements 11-28-2004, 04:31 PM sounds good my friend, it will be fun! Anyone else going? anyone else interestered? anyone here have a time in april or may when there available? thanks
Heres my suggestion, April 23, 2005... i think this would be the best time but its still up for discussion..
bbq_dan 11-29-2004, 09:21 AM How can I turn this down? As a teenager, a bunch of us used to go to Coyote Dry Lake on the way to Ft. Irwin and we had a blast! Late April I believe would be the perfect time to go. We don't want to be out there when the winds kick up (like now!).
Due to my schedule this year, I haven't been away from home overnight in the 'E' yet. Before, I'd load my Dodge pickup to the gills with tent, sleeping bags, stoves, grills, smokers, ice chests, chairs, tables and A MATTRESS(!) It should be interesting to see what goes and what stays behind.
Maybe I'll load up the truck and tow the Element. Or get a roof rack. Or small trailer.
Theelements 11-29-2004, 09:40 AM cool so april 23, 2005 is a set date?
Who here is interestered in camping, staying a night out there? other than bbq_dan?
fotobox 11-29-2004, 12:16 PM Count me in for a day outing!
Not sure about camping though.
Theelements 11-29-2004, 05:50 PM yeah im not sure bout camping either... just the day is cool. so april 23, 2005 is set... hope to see you all there, if you have ANY questions please PM me or Email me i would be happy to hear from you

soopa element 01-14-2005, 11:41 PM unfortunately i will be interviewing a bunch of 17 year old for college, which is a whole different kind of fun.
OH NO!!! Please don't say that in front of me. Oh the horror. Yes. I am a high school senior. You're not working at the schools I applied to do you? (USC, Cal Poly Pomona or Cal State Fullerton?)
Theelements 01-15-2005, 12:02 AM OH NO!!! Please don't say that in front of me. Oh the horror. Yes. I am a high school senior. You're not working at the schools I applied to do you? (USC, Cal Poly Pomona or Cal State Fullerton?)
woa me to! what school?
biocube 01-15-2005, 12:36 PM hah, don't worry
i'm interviewing youngsters for my alma matter, a small eastern college, not where i work.
besides, i don't think the cal schools do interviews, do they?
MikeQBF 01-15-2005, 01:42 PM >i don't think the cal schools do interviews, do they?
Some do. I was interviewed for CalTech, and the interview is what shot me down (not nerdy enough, I think, 'cause SATs and H.S. grades were good enough). I would expect USC to do interviews, but OTOH that's a big-ticket school and they're a lot more interested in whether your parents have the money (ooh... did I really say that?).
Most don't, esp. not the Cal State schools (Cal Poly is a Cal State school). The UofCals might. And I don't remember any interviews when I started at Harvey Mudd, but that's a private school.
>Cal Poly Pomona
Cow Piley, huh? (I went to CP-P after a year at HMC, my dad went to CP-SLO).
Since I know you live in Fullerton, I take it from your list that your objective is to go as a commuter student rather than live on campus. There's an entirely different learning dynamic between living at home with parents and being on-campus. My experience was that I would have done much better living at home - fewer distractions, less opportunity to get into trouble, more "imposed" discipline.
nippoelement2 01-15-2005, 02:56 PM i think the higher ed colleges need to do an interview. most colleges dont have to unless you try to apply for certain program.
living at homes saves costs and you can still go to parties and such unless your parents still watches you like a hawk.
biocube 01-15-2005, 03:44 PM well, i'm biased based on my background, but it seems to me that:
if you want a degree, you can go to a big school and commute. and party.
if you want an education, a small residential college (like HM or pomona, or maybe even stanford or berkely if you live there) is best. it the total immersion in the culture of knowledge, thoughtful discussions, sometimes late at night in the dorms, and being surrounded by people interested in learning, not just partying, that makes it.
plus, i think at 18 its time to get away from one's family and learn to be independent as much as possible.
anyway guys, good luck with the entrance process.
MikeQBF 01-15-2005, 04:38 PM FWIW, for me, living on-campus was a disaster. HMC was a tough enough place studies-wise, but the small-school environment fostered a "frat boy" culture that had underclassmen in constant fear of being the butt of a hazing stunt should they cross paths with a senior. It was very intimidating and distracting - my favorite thing to do there was leave, and my grades showed it. Success there required developing a thick enough skin to tune-out the nonsense. The SOB who was the dean of students actually encouraged this crap. "Character-building" he called it... "Hey, Bob! You can take your "character-building" and shove it...!"
CP-P was a different problem. It was/is a commuter school. On-campus residents were a sort of second-class citizen because the sidewalks rolled-up after 6. Facilities and interactions you would normally expect access to at a residential college didn't exist. Studying done (or procrastinated) and lacking any other stimulation, we'd tend to find trouble to get into. As engineering students, our pranks had the campus police constantly running in little circles.
I'll disagree on the "party" aspect of living at home and commuting. Even "hands-off, 'you're an adult now'" parents are still a good regulator. Commuters tended not to build relationships at school and - at least from what I saw - were more interested in applying themselves in class. Obviously the situation depends on the school, but at the two I attended (ostensibly serious technical schools) there were too many opportunities for unsupervised rabblerousing if you lived on-campus.
YMMV.
soopa element 01-15-2005, 10:07 PM I'll be going to CPP. And most likely I'll be moving into a studio or one bedroom apartment nearby that area. Any suggestions or guidance from CPP alumni will be helpful. Thank you.
MikeQBF 01-15-2005, 10:33 PM >I'll be going to CPP.
Well then - congratulations are in order! Go Broncos!
It was too long ago for me to be of much help re. housing. When I first moved off-campus it was to a cheap apartment near Holt and San Antonio, and that's a really dicey area of town now. My second place was in Ontario off of Mountain - that was too far. The drive time and a lousy class schedule conspired to make me miss entirely too many classes.
Anyway, I'd forget Pomona - it was and is a pit. You might want to check around Diamond Bar. San Dimas is a quick shot over the hill on 57, but if you start getting into Glendora (or west into Covina or Hacienda Heights) you may as well just stay in Fullerton.
Last time I drove by the area I didn't notice much in the way of new housing around the school. CP-P truly is mostly a commuter school.
soopa element 01-15-2005, 11:21 PM Mike do you happen to know the pricing of the apartments around there or you wouldn't know any sites where I could find prices would you?
MikeQBF 01-16-2005, 12:12 AM Have no idea. It's been quite a number of years (let's just say >15  ) and the whole area has changed quite a bit since I left.

haha. thanks anyways. I just tried looking up on the internet. not much help. guess i'll have to start driving around. the joy of driving in my Echo 3. YAY!!!
