On the HondaSUV forum there have been several threads talking about damage to the gas tank vapor control canister of the CRV. This is the brick shaped object behind the gas tank on both the CRV and Element. I believe it allows air into the gas tank, but keeps gas vapors from escaping.
Some CRV owners have found that this canister, or its protective plate, can be torn loose when traveling in ruts or through mud holes. In the worse case this item got shoved back against the rear drive shaft, causing a oil leak in the rear diff.
It is possible that the Element's geometry is sufficiently different that this is problem is less likely. The gas tank shape is different. The Element's canister appears to be rotated 90 degrees, so it has more clearance. The distance from canister to drive shaft might also be different. This canister and plate appear on the fuel line parts diagrams.
In any case, it is worth keeping this item in mind when taking the Element on to rough roads.
