Well I've had my E 4 days and we went to the park to play frisbee today. This was Rex's first time in the E.

He looks upset! Is that because you made him sit in the back? ;-)

He seemed a little unsure at first, like, "who's car is this?" but he was fine after a few minutes.
Coming home I was soooo glad for the 'E' interior, he slobbered all over the place after playing hard (and I forgot to take water for him) and I just sponged it out when we got home.
He was only in my VW a few times, but with the black interior, the dog hair was just awful, so he was banned from that car. The fabric on the seats in a GTI seemed to add the dog hair into its weave and was impossible to get out.

Get him a little "carrying case" and he won't shed/slobber/muddy up anything. Although I prefer the plastic ones, the soft sided mesh type let a dog see everywhere as if he is loose. Put it between the front and rear seats for maximum safety in the event of a rear-ender.
