: 2 Tanks and 400 Miles
vegasbaby 04-11-2003, 12:15 PM I know there is another thread out there. But there's gotta be some hope. I've gotten 16.5 MPG on both of my first 2 tankfuls. Is there a significant difference between 5 Speed and Auto? I noticed that at least 2 other people from Florida have hade the same problem. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks...

Have you weighed your right foot lately ?
BB & Freaky-E 04-12-2003, 02:28 AM I was worried about this too. but when I was thinking more about it, I know I have a 15.9 gallon tank. I know when I fill my my tank it only takes about 11 gallons to fill it back up. So I guess I still have 4.9 gallons left for the reserve.
So when I take 270 average miles per tank devided by 11 gal = 24.5 mpg
Maybe you are forgeting about what is still in the tank. try the math and see what happens.
I use mine for business, travel 235 miles per day and get between 26-28 mpg. Its a 2wd, auto and have not used air conditioning yet

Was only trying to be funny -- sorry :o
vegasbaby 04-12-2003, 09:56 AM Funny thing that is usually my problem. But with the E, I don't speed! I'm still under the 600 miles so things might change. I have people passing me on the Interstate doing 80.
E-lated 04-12-2003, 10:32 AM I am just hitting 6500 mi. in my E and noticed the fuel efficiency goes down above 70 mph. But the most important factor in mpg's is how you drive around town (quick starts and stops). Obviously this true with any gasoline powered vehicle. Most of my driving is hiway and have been averaging around 26 mpg. Although on a long trip have recorded as much as 28. Guess it's hard for me to think that one E would get any more out of a tank than another assuming they were driven similarly.. my 2 cents
good luck :D
peterdaniel 04-12-2003, 10:50 PM I have a 2wd auto and have not seen above 23 miles per gallon. My usual average is 20.5 and i use mid grade and sometimes premium. I drive a very good mix of city and highway with perhaps a slight lean towards highway. I have 1500 miles on my E but with one very important difference, I live in CA where the fuel is a different blend. also all of those people getting 25 and greater , what altitude do you live at? the higher the altitude , the greater the mileage

I live in the bay area of Norcal. pretty much at sea level around here.
Element(al)LX 04-15-2004, 10:52 AM My first two tanks of fuel resulted in getting milage around 25 - 28 mpg.
75% country roads 25% city, and I am not light on the pedal.

Yer just wasting money with mid or premium gas.
Higher octane does nothing for you if your car is supposed run on regular.
It may actually run leaner than regular, because of extra additives that displace actually gas.
vegasbaby 04-15-2004, 12:47 PM 15000 miles in one year... I have yet to see anything above 23 mpg. I've been told I have I drive my E pretty conservatively, unlike my Jetta. Go figure...
\"VOSGTC\" 04-15-2004, 08:18 PM Still under 1500 mile. Average 22 mpg, best tank was 27.65. Supposed to get better after 3K.
Eric B. 04-15-2004, 10:31 PM Like BB said, I think it has to do more with the huge reserve on the gas tank.
The mileage gets better when the E breaks in and you get used to calculating the mileage correctly. It's pretty funny that the gas light comes on so early.
thesussman 04-15-2004, 11:18 PM Just hit 1000 miles in my E. I've been averaging about 22.5 mpg, but I have gotten as high as 25 (and to my surprise, that was mostly city driving!).
gticl 04-17-2004, 12:53 PM Car: 03 Element EX Auto
My E is almost 9000 miles on meter...
My average (Daily driving 85% city/15% freeway) is 17-20mpg....
I tried different oct of gas, and I am light on the pedal all the time.
Never got better than 22mpg in the above condition.
On interstate cruising, the best I've got is 25-26mpg @ 310miles trip.

You also need to indicate whether 2WD or AWD. AWD costs 2 mpg.
My thumbnail observation is that light-on-the-pedal with the automatic will get you near the sticker mpg ratings, while similar driving with the manual will yield 15% better than sticker. At least Honda's sticker ratings are more honest than, say, Ford's, where nobody gets near the claimed performance.
>I tried different oct of gas
Only thing that accomplished was lightening your wallet. Stick with regular.
YMMV, pun intended.
BrownBag 04-17-2004, 01:36 PM 2 week old E. 1500k already. Consistent 25mpg 85% highway 15% city. I love this vehicle!
