Hello everyone, thanks for the great site. Have been lurking and learning for a little while. Got a good picture today and thought I would share. No BS, no Photoshop, this was the actual temperature tonight ~11:50 PM.

Great pic!

I would question the accuracy of that reading, however unless it is in Alaska. I have been in temps that cold a few times and I can tell you that cars are NOT happy :)

Great pic. That's gotta be Alaska, but I understand they have Fred Meyer stores in Idaho too.

There is a Fred Meyer in Fairbanks (shopped there years ago), and the Fairbanks airport reported -45F at 6am.

But isn't the real question in everyone's mind: is he using a stock battery?

You know, as I was leaving class last night, I mentioned to a classmate that I could never live anywhere even slightly colder then here... and this was at 1030 last night, and it was probably around 30. -55 would make me wet myself, and go inside to burn the house down (trying to keep warm)

Hello all

Yes, I did graduate from Univ of Alaska Fairbanks
Yes, this is Fairbanks, Alaska
Yes, it really is that cold
Yes, it is my stock battery
Yes, the heater works, kind of :-D

Here is the scoop... As of last Sunday we were enjoying a very balmy Winter. We had one short (3 day) cold snap which saw a few days in the -30's. Last week we set high temperature records with temps running in the low to mid +30's (one day was +38F). The cold came on Monday. We have been running -30 or colder since then. Some areas areound town have been seeing temperatures in the -60 and colder range. This shot was taken at the local Fred Meyer store at close to midnight Wednesday 1/11/05. As you can see it was ass cold.
As for the E, well it takes everything in stride. The heater works, ok, though at this temperature, ok is doing pretty darn well. Inside the E is comfortable enough that I often don't wear my jacket. The car starts fine, though that is attritutable to the "winterization" that all cars must go through. This involves installing a battery blanket that cradles the battery and keeps it warm, an oil pan heater to keep the oil from gooing up and a block heater to keep the engine from freezing up. In the picture below you can see the cord hanging out of the front of the car. Everywhere the E goes it gets plugged in. A car will literally freeze in a matter of hours, so this is critical. A small trivia fact... when temperatures fall to -40 or colder a person can throw a cup of hot coffee into the air and it will freeze before it hits the ground. Craziest thing you will ever see. The only issue the E has had is one that is with all cars, once the temperature hits -30 or so the tires no longer stay round and it's like driving on blocks of cement until they warm up.

In the picture below the hazy/cloudy stuff is ice fog (frozen pollution) that is reflecting the flash back at the camera.

Enjoy

The real question on my mind is...

"What the hell is he doing outside the Element snapping photos when the temp is -55?"

Sweet mercy, man, get in out of the cold!!!

..,

Only an Alaskan (or northern Canadian) would believe that these comments bring back warm memories for me! I used to spend a lot of time in the Yukon Territory in the winter -you northerners are quite a breed, taking perverse pride in dealing with and surviving brutal conditions forges a unique cameraderie. A lot of antifreeze (of the alcohol kind) helps as well!

TMac, this has gotta be the E of the month!

I have heard about the frozen fog. Once sold a dog to someone in Alaska, and the poor thing (who loved snow down in the lower 48) refused to go outside for four days. She adapted eventually.

Fuel Prices are actually ALOT better than they were... We live 8 miles from the refinery, though we pay through the nose for gas. Last year the refinery sold to Flint Hills and after a week they raised the price 20 cents a gallon and called it a market adjustment. As recently as New Years gas was over $2.20 a gallon, so $1.99 or less is a welcome sight.

Dogbox, what kind of dogs do you breed? Can you tell me who you shipped the dog to? I'm just being nosey

Holy Schmoly! That is just all kinds of freakin cold! I'm really not sure that even qualifies as a temperature!
Some friends and I went up to Fairbanks on Halloween weekend, 2003 for another friend's wedding. We were all packed for bundling up, and then it was hardly snowy - they were having some kind of dry spell. Oh well - had tons of fun visiting "The Pipeline" and the UAF campus and of course we all trekked up to "The" North Pole! Good Luck with your frEEzing E - hope it holds up well for you up there! :)
P.S.
I've seen lots of posts from people filling their E's up with all kinds of stuff to see how full they can get it - do you think a Moose would cooperate with that sort of experiment, cause it sure would fill it up!?!

We will get well down into the double negative numberes here in the Detroit area from time to time, but then the freaky part is the next day it can be 50 above. This year alone we've gotten, and lost, 6-8 inches of snow at a time 2 or 3 times already. The local joke here is "Don't like the weather? Wait 15 minutes!"

Here in Chicago, We got nearly 12" of snow late last week and temps had been sitting around 30 most of the weekend etc. Wednesday, I think it was around 60 in the afternoon. I recall going out to my car without a jacket and all. It was gorgeous out. There was a chill rolling in the air from all the piles of snow still lingering and the cold pavement, but the air temp was really nice.

I was out driving around and the fog was pouring out of the forest preserves like smoke from a forest fire. I took a drive out to Aurora, IL (50 miles) at around 6pm and the weather was really nice on the way out. Still over 50. Coming home around 1am (Thursday) it was under 40 and a little rain had been falling. I could hear occasional glops of freezing rain hitting my windshield as I got around O'Hare. I was going down one road near me, one that I had driven earlier with no problem, and noticed a new sign on the shoulder warning of water on the pavement. From the looks of the rain that was falling, I figured, ahh a little frezing puddle so I slowed a little and let off the gas. It hadn't been raining that hard. About 20 or 30' later I saw the water up on the pavement. We weren't talking WET icy pavement here..... I swerved over the high point of the road, the center line, (fortunately I was the only one on the road) , and still hit about 6" of water with my right tires.

I got home safe and sound and every last bit of snow was now gone. Water was pouring off the roof from heavy rain (roof was replaced at xmas, still no gutters). While I was standing at the front door trying to find my key. I got drenched. Temp was now approaching 30. I went to sleep and when I awoke later the dawn revealed our back yard flooded, my Element covered with a new layer of fresh snow and temps around 10.

http://members.aol.com/wmas1960/WebPosts/0005-NET.jpg

so, 24hrs, 50 degree drop in temps, 2" of rain and about 1/2" of snow and I can go skating in my backyard.

While writing this I had to take my Brother to get a haircut. It is in single digits and approaching 0. He tried to get my dad's Seville started but no go. Went out to the E, 3 or 4 cranks and it started like a champ. Incidentally, I have been noticing that mine seems to like about 4 to 5 cranks to turn over when it is cold like this. No straining or anything. Just takes a few turns of the starter.

You know...I wonder what would really happen if you tried that.
I've done it out the wing window of an International semi when it was about 15 below in a rest stop in Wyoming one time. (I've had some unique jobs.)

That was cold. I had to rub it for fifteen minutes just to get the blood flowing again.

I bet the sucker'd fall off in -55. :-o

I don't know how you guys do handling it. A little after 4pm here and it's 68 degrees outside.
The forecast for tomorrow is 70 and it's supposed to be in the mid 70's by Wednesday.

Yeah, I've been up in that neck of the woods. I had heard that Tacoma had a really high suicide rate.
Not a shocker once you've been there.

High of 73 degrees today, felt more like 78 though.
Forcast high of 78 tomorrow and 79 on Wednesday.

I got a little bit of a sunburn this weekend while washing the cars.

How do you like our nice Hawaiian weather now? The NW is in for a week long Pinneapple Express - warm (50s) and very wet.

We only get a week or two of winter, when cold high pressure pours out of British Columbia. Otherwise October to June is dominated by the series of Pacific lows that keep things wet. The rest of the year is dry, but not too hot, summer.

Just like California - dry summer, wet winter.

I'm with you. Hate this warm weather. Give me the snow and ice anyday.

As for the other post that says two weeks of winter weather--that really depends on where in the Pac NW you live. I have friends who live on the east side of town and their weather is dramatically different than what I get on the west. Not to mention those on the east of the cascades who can get years with snow at Thanksgiving that doesn't thaw for months, or those off the Gorge who can have the same thing. My friend in Stevenson is still iced in from last weekend.

I travel around Alaska quite a bit and probably saw this E when I was in Fairbanks a couple of months back.
In 2003 I took a trip to Barrow and couldn't believe it when I saw an E there. It was -60. My coldest temp to date. Last week I saw an E in Nome. -20. Not so bad, but still DAMN cold.

Hello to Fairbanks, and say hello to Infections for me.
