I was wondering if anyone has seen a jacked up E with some outragious clearance from the ground. Or if there is any after market lift kits availible.

Safety concerns?

>Safety concerns?

No, mechanical concerns. You can't do extreme lifts with FWD-based 4x4s like you can with RWD-based trucks. It's the take-off angle between the (front) transaxle and the wheels that's the problem. More than a couple of inches will chew-up CVJs at an alarming rate.

(Photoshop, of course... I don't remember where I got this pic, so I can't give props, but good job whoever did it!)

That makes me think of the polar bear vans in the artic. LOL Dont let my hubby see that, hes REALLY into the offroading and he would start looking at my E with that twinkle in his eye.

Dont get me wrong though. It is VERY cool looking! It would make it a whole lot easier here to run over the tourists. After all, if its "tourist season" why cant we cull the heard?

hey now, be cool. tourists support your town's businesses by spending their money while passing through.

I didn't know they made fiberglass shells that looked like an Element :) Of course, if they make 'big foot' shell that looks like a triceratops or alligator, there isn't any reason they couldn't copy an Element. Somehow, I don't think it would get many raves from the crowds.

As cool as that picture is, do you know how dangerous that Element would be? LOL, talk about top heavy. Better put in a roll cage!

You're going about it all wrong. The new look that's in is to put on a beefy set of off-road tires and then keep the vehicle set low. Just like they did with the new Batmobile.

My Jeep-crazy friend said (and I quote):

"That is the coolest an Element will ever get"

(referring to the photoshopped picture).

And I actually like the look of the new Batmobile. Hopefully Christian Bale can pull this movie off without it being a complete cheese-fest. Who knows.

hey,

while what you are saying is technically true to a point, i agree with tess-Living in a "rich, old money" lakeside town, tourists are around here, generally are PITA-it's the locals that keep this town a fun, caring and community based place to live.....it's really obnoxious here in the summer-when the rich kids come to town, and think they can raise hell, treat people like Sh!t etc......believe me, when Labor Day rolls around, there are always "Waive bye bye to tourists" parties going on!

i see what you're saying. :) i don't live in a touristy area so i don't know what it's like. i work in downtown LA and get a lot of tourists there, but they're mostly busy taking pictures of the tall buildings. no hard feelings, hopefully.

back to the subject of this thread... wouldn't a lift like that shown in the altered image be more likely to tip over? that's one thing about the E that i'm kinda worried about. it's got kind of a short wheelbase and it's kinda narrow, too. would a modest lift cause any real problems?

i would love to see a monster truck e...that would just be awesome...it would be less top heavy than grave digger...i mean c'mon....of course you would have to put a roll cage inside it

wow Element with 4WD Lo gearing, locking differential for the rear axle (e- or arb- lockers), skid plates, tall tires: 33"s , 10"+ ground ground clearence, & internal roll bars.

that would be love.

I would be happy with 2" lift doe anybody know where to look or if possible? Also I need to protect the radiator grill and reviewed "home depot solutions". Any recommendation on after market billet grill protections and mounting a winche?

Thanks,

I have mixed feeling about my Mr. Grille inserts - love the overall look and ease of installation, materials seem sturdy enough. However, the fit could be better (maybe an 8 out of 10) and there is a slight imperfection right dead center that bugs me everytime I look at it, although obviously not quite enough to make me take the nose back off and replace it. I ordered a second one for a friend, though, and it did not appear to have this imperfection.

Decent value at a cost of $75 + $9.50 shipping. Someone on this board just installed a new stainless steel one that was in a similar price range and posted pics within the last day or so. That was a different look than the billet, but appeared to be good quality.

You from P'cola too? I had to drive through a "river" Sunday after Dennis was over to go check on my house. It was almost as deep as the water you were in, but it was only about 75' across the road. Dennis really made me wish that I had a lift kit and bigger tires.

How did your house do through the storm?

If you need a vehicle to wade through flood waters, something like the MB truck would be a whole lot better than a slightly modified Element. These are images from last Novemeber when I was out exploring flooding along the Snohomish River. By the time I got to this spot (Ben Howard Rd, east of Monroe, WA), flood waters had receeded quite a bit. Note the Jeep that had serious problems earlier. I turned around at this point, though, having seen other cross I'm sure I wouldn't have had problems.

After seeing that pic I'm going to my buddys shop and start comming up with ideas where theres a will theres a way at least a body lift

I'm not a mechanic but I'm like you where there is a will there is a way. Maybe a body lift I've got buddys back in La. who do that on their trucks to put biger tires on till they get the money for a supension kit they all like to go big or go home buddy lost his truck in New Orleans b/c he drove his new one out when they said manditor evacuation if you don't evacuate you will be arrested he lived 2 blocks from the leve and is yet to go back and get his belongings if there are any left his apartment was 12 ft under water

How would you do a body lift on the Element? Remount the front and back subframes with spacers? Don't forget to modify all the suspension mounting points. You might also want to lengthen the drive shafts.

you really can't lift the body of an E off of the frame like a jeep because the body is the frame on the E. that's what a unibody is.

Even if body/suspension lift is possible on E, whouldn't it shorten the life of the cv-joints due to the increased relative angle between the main cv-axle and its spline end?

This has been my contention the whole time. CV joints are not happy when they have to operate at severe angles, unless they are clearanced or replaced with high angle units.

This is just in theory.....But, anybody have any thoughts if 1.5 to 2.0 inches of suspension lift would throw off the C/V angle too much. From what I've seen (using a floor jack) it will be minimal impact. I understand that it will cause premature wear, but it shouldn't cause them to grenade.I know it will never be a jeep, but an inch or two of lift would look pretty cool.

If I get "bored on friday" again, I might begin to fab something for testing.
Just a thought.....

If you do ever find a retail lift kit for the E let me know. I have a 2006 4wd EX-p and am really interested in gaining 2 to 3 more inches.

Thanks.

yeah but in stock form the axles have a slight rise from the diff to the hubs. if you lift it the angle would be nearly the same but now there would be a slight drop from the diff to the hub. Same effective angle so I think the lift would have a negligible net effect. I would totally agree if the axles were perfectly horizontal or angled downward to begin with.

I could be wrong as this is based on my casual observances while working on my E.

I'm not sure what it's called, but my cousin up in NorCal had his Tacoma wheels "pushed out", meaning the wheel base was made wider. I've never heard much about doing this, but couldn't that help out some?

Wheelbase is the measurement of the axles front to rear. What you are apparently talking about is the "track" which can be widened by using wheels with less offset or with "spacers" which fit between the wheel and their mounting surface
