WHAT? I went to my local tuner shop and paid like $20 for "smoke tail spray". it's easy to do, just remove the tail, mask off any areas you don't want done, and apply about 2 - 3 thin layers of the smoke tail spray, and then a layer of clearcoat. Mine's been done for about a year and a half now with no signs of peeling or fading:

this was a pic from a meet back on 2003, mine is the SLM, 2nd from right.

it cost $25! I masked off the reverse and turn signal lights area when i did it too. I can't find the pix of the install but I originally posted instructions at the "other" site. too bad it's down. ;)

yeah you could do that, Ive used that stuff in the past, I like it cause it is cheap, but then after somtime even the clear chips, flakes, and even fades.the way its done by shops is actually using automotive paint .the tails are then cleared and colorsanded, the result is a Highgloss finish like that of the the truck it self. and wont fade or flake.Heres a better pic of mine.

I'd be afraid of doing that, If you got rear-ended, and it was found out that you did something to lessen the brightness of the tailights its possible that you could be found at fault I imagine.

to those who have their tails smoked- how much does it lessen the brightness? is it noticable/dangerous? are their any laws against doing so?
