We just traded in our 2001 CRV and bought the fantastic 2005 SOP AWD EX Element and want to use it for mild off-roading in the Sierras. Concerned about clearance and lack of skid plates. When I searched this forum, most messages seemed to be generated in 2003 so thought I'd check and see if there are any skid plates or skid plate designs that we could investigate adding to our 2005. Thanks for any and all help!

I haven't seen anything new. The 05 is essentially the same as 03, except for the outer door sills. What parts where you hoping to protect?

Just sit on your helmet when offroading.
We're concerned about the strange looking cage around the gas tank. Anyone ever add a skid plate?

I don't think it possible to add a plate under the gas tank that would be strong enough to support part of the weight of the car as you 'skid' over it. You may be add something that would deflect more loose rocks than the cage does. Your best bet is to take your Element to a skilled off-road shop, have them put it up on their lift, and manufacture what ever plates they think will help.

Going to get under my Element and see if I can come up with some ideas. Don't use aluminum its lite but easier to puncture than stainless or iron. Metal fab is my past time hope to get back with you. What exeactly are you going to be doing to help with the ideas (exp.mud doging, rock crawling) Oh yeah for you older hands in this club I might be young but I'm not dumb and I know there is a fine line between reality and a dream.
