The J 04-05-2005, 10:41 PM My wife and I are expecting our 2nd son any day now and are still trying to determine the best name for the little fella. My 1st son's name is Zane Phillip, and we are narrowing our search to names that are uncommon enough to compliment his. Please help us out with our dilemma.
Thanks,
The J
Bald Eagle 04-05-2005, 11:04 PM Just don't "Julia Roberts" the child and name him something like Phinnaeus Walter, or the poor kid will spend years having his pants pulled down and his lunch money stolen.

We don't want to go too crazy, as you can see. However, having a Zane and say Mike just doesn't quite seem right. Plus you may end up with one resenting his normal or odd name later, this way at least it's an even playing field.
Thanks,

bandwagon03 04-06-2005, 06:47 AM I voted Gavin. Be sure to try the "playground" test, ie, shout the kids full name in a loud voice, and see if it sounds right.. :)
joemama 04-06-2005, 09:19 AM Here is a website thatmight be of interest. At the very least it's a cool way of looking at names.

It shows the popularityof names over time.

StLouisPenguin 04-06-2005, 06:58 PM I voted for Griffin.....I love that name....in fact when considering boy baby names if ever the time were to occur it would top the list.
But.....second choice would be Grant, it happens to be my husband's name.
Also, Gavin is my friend's older brother's name.
In all honestly you and your wife have chosen some great names...I honestly like them all.
DOGBOX 04-06-2005, 08:19 PM Griffin sounds like a last name. Logan sounds like a dog's name. Gavin--not bad, but personally I don't like that "Gaaa..." sound at the start. I'd go for Grant or Miles. They sound most like people names to me. I don't understand folks who name their kids to sound like dogs or places or other things. But that's just me. I am rather old fashioned in many ways.
babyhippie 04-06-2005, 09:22 PM I like all 3 of the "G" names you had listed. Logan always reminds me of loganberry punch.
But then again, my kids are Mickey (who now only wants to be called "Mick") & Jagger (see what happens when your husband works in radio?)...
Oh--and congrats in advance on your impending new arrival! :)

It's kinda' funny you would say that, as I had originally wanted to use Max, but since that is our cat's name it was quickly vetoed by my wife. For the record though, I don’t believe any one of these names is a “dog” name, to me that would be something like rover, or shaggy, but I understand what you are getting at.
Thanks everyone so far for your opinions, and contributions. I'll be sure to let you all know what we choose when he finally shows up.

joemama 04-06-2005, 10:42 PM What about the name Jake?
Jakes your buddy. Jakes your pal.
Jake is the guy who bails you out of jail. Jakes the kinda guy who does not get mad when you puke in his car.
Jake.
WartHog 04-06-2005, 10:59 PM Darn, ever since 'Dweezel' & 'Moon Unit' were taken, all the really good names are gone!
How about 'Mason Edward'? That's what we were going to name our firstborn -- until she arrived. (This was 'back in the day', when you didn't know until you found out in the delivery room.)

Jake.
My wife had suggested Jake when we were naming Zane, and aside from having a cousin Jake (kinda' his name was Jason the family called him Jake) our last name is Carbonneau. It doesn't hit you right away, but try saying Jake Carbonneau in one breath, it often sounds like: "JayCarbonneau" or it can sound like you stuttered a little on the "K." Otherwise I would have possibly been onboard with Jake. Thanks for the suggestion(s).

Mason had made the first five page (both sides) list she had come up with, and I think it survived all the way down to the one page (single sided) list.
We do have a back-up name if the little fella’ turns out to be a little filly, Audrey, though I don't recall if there's a back-up middle name. Hmmmm

Bald Eagle 04-06-2005, 11:06 PM I like all 3 of the "G" names you had listed...
...but you missed Galapagos. You also don't have any city names on your list, like Paris (shudder) or Savannah, but I guess those don't really work for boys. How about Green Bay? Gainesville? Gettysburg? Goshen?
Nah, never mind.
mrsilly 04-06-2005, 11:10 PM Don't get mad at me for saying so, but those names sound like they were inspired by 5 leading men on various soap operas. How about something edgy - like "Thor" or "Rex"!! :)
Don't listen to me. I don't have kids.
joemama 04-06-2005, 11:13 PM Ok here is a name my Mom always brings up when my friends are naming thier kids.
Doctor.
Then your child will be known as Doctor Carbonneau forever no matter how much education they have they will always be a Doctor.

Now see there's a name I could get behind, Doctor Carbonneau. Then again I had suggeted King. King Carbonneau, it's got a ring to it.

I knew someone really named "King". His middle name was "James". Apparently his mom was a bible freak, and the kid (now an older gentleman) got stuck with the consequences.
lwclancers 04-07-2005, 11:40 AM I like Logan, but dont use it OK?
My wife and I picked that for our boy due in July/August.

Careful, King is getting close to dog names...King, Duke, Rex.... How about President, Senator or Ambassador? Maybe Darth?
I used to work with a guy whose last name was Tickle. When his wife was expecting their first daughter, we were all trying to convince him to name the kid Tess.
mrsilly 04-07-2005, 01:52 PM I've always done it the other way around - dogs named with people names. Douglas, Vincent, & Mike have been favorites for males. Mary, Jennifer, & Connie are great names for females. People always react when you say "my dog Doug" or "my dog Jennifer".
One thing's for sure. There will be no humans named John, Mike, or Jennifer in my house. My kids might hate me for it, but they'll have unique names.
Reminds me of a guy I used to know whose father named all 5 kids "Al": Alan, Albert, Alvin, Alice, & Alicia. He was a little bit pissed at his dad for that. I loved it.

Just goes to show that everyone has there own taste. See I don't like humans named like dogs, and I don't like dogs named like humans. Though "Jennifer", I admit, is at least a little cuter than the typical "Gretchen", "Rosie", and "Billy" names used for dogs.
The J 04-07-2005, 11:01 PM We have this rather comprehensive name dictionary, and it has entries for things like; Spider (ok, maybe, but not for my kid), Toxey (liek the Avenger), but weirdest so far... Skylab after the failed American Space Station. What the hell is that about?
The J
Thanks again guys (and gals) for your posts and votes.

The J 04-09-2005, 02:54 PM My wife's gonna laugh herself into labor (hopefully) on that one.
Thanks,
The J
PS. Today is her last day of work before her maternity leave begins, if she follows form she should go into labor tommorrow night. As this was how it was with the last child. Although, it was also 2 hours past her due date when she went into labor last time. Her fear is that it will be the 18th as her OBGYN is going on a cruise the 17th. We'll see.

M Ornett 04-10-2005, 03:13 PM Griffin. I never had children and this is the name I would have used for a boy.

Thank you, I'll give her your regards in the morning. I installed the seat on Friday with the help of Zane. He really like his new position behind Daddy, I was afraid that the change might bother him as we can't see each other as easily any more.
The J
Griffin. I never had children and this is the name I would have used for a boy.
I have been surprised how many people have come out in favor of Griffin, both here on the boards, and abroad. Only because we were not entirely sure at first, but it stayed with me in the back of my head and grew on me more and more.
Thanks,

The J 04-10-2005, 11:04 PM One more thing, for those of you who are interested in seeing our family so far, this is our family website; http://www.thecarbonneaus.com. It's been ages since I have truly updated it. It's in the middle of a large overhaul, but feel free to take a peek.

We were concerned about the dork factor of Miles, but my wife really likes it and it's not always dork associated i.e. Miles Davis. Ok that's all I've got, but I'm sure there's more.

The J 04-13-2005, 12:14 AM So, she has decided that we are going to choose similarly to how we chose last time... fate (sort of). She has divided up a 24-hour day into four 6-hour time slots. Of course, this means that we have a name to kick out still. Each time slot will have a name appointed to it and whichever time slot he is born in will determine the name. I do believe however, that there is an; "Oh my god, look at him, he's got to be a (insert name)" veto/clause.
I'll keep you all posted and thanks for all the great feedback.

as long as you don't name him Chad it's all good. for some reason I hate the name Chad. I also hate people with three first names... like Chad Michael Murray . lol. good luck with the baby and you know you gotta post pics of him when he's born! ;)

wankerklink 04-14-2005, 09:08 AM Grant is a good name. One of my grandson's name is Grant. I have 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild----I think!
L-M-N-T 04-17-2005, 01:46 AM Well, the list of potential names all sound nice, but having grown up with a not-so-ordinary name... I would probably go for something more timeless...
like ... Edward David.
But, if you must have a 'different' name, how about Westin, Sloan, Tristan, Chandler, Jodi or Graham?
Or... Anakin, Bilboa or Feyd-Rautha?

The J 04-25-2005, 10:38 PM Greetings again everyone,
Sorry it's been so long, but we had our child Thursday April 14th at 5:04pm and it's been a little busy around here. So, despite Gavin coming in first our buy ended up being a Logan. Logan J Carbonneau to be exact. He was 9.98lbs 22inches with blond hair and blue eyes. Everything went well and my other son, Zane (21 months) has adjusted just fine. He greets him with a kiss and watches over everyone who touches his little brother.
The name came from the time-of-birth "system" my wife came up with to name both our children. The breakdown worked like this; 8am-2pm Miles, 2pm-8pm Logan, 8pm-2am Griffin, 2am-8am Grant. She decided to drop Gavin (ironically enough) after realizing that her best friend from high school had named her 2nd son Gavin, and she just felt weird about that.
Thanks everyone for your participation, and best wishes.

Ps. I'll be posting pics on the website in the next few days; I'll keep you folks in touch.

SSKELEMENT 04-29-2005, 07:45 PM Congrats on the birth of your son. It amazes me how Honda, a company that does everything right, screwed up the target market for the Element.
Little did they know that the E would be such a hit with families. I have 2 girls 9 and 4. i have them trained now, so that when we see an E on the road we yell out " Element Element" and whatever color it is.
kinda like the old " punch buggy" for the old bugs.
