Had fun running around on mud and dirt trails in the Boggs Mountain Demonstration Forest (near Cobb, CA) before a mountain bike race this past weekend. sorry, we forgot to take pictures.
For a car based suv, did real well, very please. i even had my wife and son nervous that we may get stuck. We may need to buy a $60 High-Lift Jack, tow straps, folding shovel, and traction pads...as future dirty temptations may get us stuck sometime in the future.
for a two SUV family of four...
an Element AWD 5spd
and
a Wrangler Rubicon (Unlimited) may be the best combination.

i know i know...and we had three digitial cameras in our "E_funkwagon" at the time.
i'll do 50 push-ups as self-proscribed punishment.
our "Off Roading" area has been gathering dust lately, that posting something lame might be better than nothing, no?

will a high lift jack work with the Element? I don't mean to spoil your fun but I have thought of it too and had my doubts.

Finding a safe place to carry a 4' long chunk of steel would be a pain. Strapping it to the floor mounting bars of the rear seats would be best.
I can think of 2 ways of using such a jack:
- there is a strap and hook adapter that allows you to lift a wheel. Then you can fill in the hole that the spinning wheel has dug.
- there is a kit allows you to use the jack as a winch. However even with this you need additional chain (heavy) or low stretch tow strap.
- the plastic base extension for the hilift jack also will work with the Element's jack.
I have discussed winching options in a couple of 'off roading' threads.

I bet it was some nasty bogging.. Was there any moisture in the ground, or were you just throwing a dust roost you thought was mud?
