I was just curious if HandA is going to carry Magnesium Metallic touch up paint?

Thanks!

I've added it to the site. We should have the paint pens in that color shortly too.

paint pens???

Yeah... the pens are easier to control than the traditional brushes with the Honda touch up paint. They are a great thing for chips here and there. :)

What's the color code for SOP? I'm either blind or stupid or both , but I can't find it on the E.

I went through http://www.paintscratch.com/cgi-bin/makepaint2.cgi and the match was good... They have a pen with base/pearl coat and then a clear coat pen.

I just bought a Rallye Red paintpen on eBay from Paint Pens (http://stores.ebay.com/Paint-Pens-and-Stuff). In addition to touching up the occasional rock chip I'll inevitably receive (tons of road construction where I live), I plan on using it to cover the "connectors" between the letters in the Element logo on the rear of my E. I'll post pix once I'm done!

I recently got a small chip behind my right rear door. I think that a paint pen should do the trick. Does anyone think that brush aplication is better?

I think that those ebay pens lack the exact color. They do not specify the factory code. It is possible to get a color that is very different. This is because even factory colors very.

I went to http://www.paintscratch.com/ and found something strange. It lists SOP as YR-539M. On my sticker, it shows YR-539P. I am guessing that the M and P mean metallic and pearl. Did they make a mistake on this color?
Here is the listed 2004 colors:

Color Description........................Color Code
Fiji Blue Pearl Clearcoat................B-529P
Nighthawk Black Pearl Clearcoat.....B-92P
Galapagos Green Metallic Clearcoat.G-511M
Satin Silver Metallic Clearcoat........NH-623M
Shoreline Mist Metallic Clearcoat.....YR-528M
Sunset Orange Pearl Clearcoat.......YR-539M

DX Gray (bumper) 7135
EX Gray (bumper) 7136

Notice the P for Fuji Blue amd Nighthawk Black? I sent an inquery about this to Paintscratch.com. I hope that they get back to me in a timely manor.

I sent another email to paintscratch.com (http://www.paintscratch.com). It said the following:
This is the second time that I have tried to contact you on this. Time
is an issue for me. I have a 2004 Honda Element with the color: Sunset Orange Pearl. My number is YR-539P-L. Your site lists only YR539M as a choice for S.O.P. I am guessing that the "M" is for metallic, and "P" would be for pearl. Did you make a mistake? The other pearl colors you list, have the
correct code. Can I get the correct color or what? Can someone there please reply to me? I am about to take a big drive, and I need the paint very soon.
Thank you
Gordon

Today I got an email back from them that said:

Thank you for your inquiry. We will check with our color technicians and let you
know as soon as
possible if this color is available.

Honda owners (except the Passport model) should enter the factory code in the
box provided below.
This code is shown on your color identification plate for 1990 and later models.
(Not all Hondas
have a factory code). If your color code is YR-508M and your factory code is A,
select YR-508M for
your color, then enter A for Factory Code below. We will receive the color code
YR-508M-A for your
order.

Sincerely,
BillW at Paintscratch.com

You SOP owners should be paying attention. Maybe one day you will need some touch-up paint, too.

I don't know what your problem is in ordering the SOP, or why PaintScratch would be having problems explaining themselves... but I have been buying SOP from them since May of this year without any issues. I have bought it on 3 seperate occasions and each and every spray can matched the previous perfectly. The SOP from PaintScratch is a dead on match to the SOP on my Element too.

I highly recommend PaintScratch (http://www.paintscratch.com) over getting the little touch-up kits from a dealer.

EDIT: GordoSan I just figured out what your problem is with ordering on their site. When you go to the paint selection page after first choosing the year, make and model. Select the SOP color using the radio button. Then look above the color selection and you will see a dropdown box. In there choose the L. That is all you need to do. That is the exact paint match.

So you don't see a problem with the "M" being in the code, instead of the "P"? Granted, if they are handing out Sunset Orange Metallic, maybe its not so noticeable on a small area. Just so you know what I am talking about, its not the dropdown box. I can do that part alright. Read my post again. It is the very code that they show for SOP, that is the problem. Maybe its a typo, on their part?

I just got word from Paintscratch.com (http://www.paintscratch.com) Here is what they said:
This color is avaliable in pints or quarts only facpac. Tthis would be a
special order we would have to quote you the price should you decide to
order. This may take longer than your time table would allow We can't ship
larger sizes outside the continental United States because automotive paint is
considered hazardous.

Sincerely,
BillW at Paintscratch.com

So, the most poopular E color and they don't carry the correct code? Huh? WTF? So spdrcr5, maybe you have good results with the metallic version. I'm not sure that I want to do business with them now. This issue has left a bad taste in my mouth. :x

Heres what I wrote back:
You've got to be kidding me. You are acting like I am asking for something special. I am asking for the most popular OEM color on the Honda Element. I am not sure why everyone seems to reccomend you guys. Can you at least explain why you don't have the correct color listed? I could understand if you just couldn't do the pearl, but I see the other pearl colors listed with a P for the Element, just not Sunset Orange.

P.S. I have posted this discussion on the Element Owners Club (http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?p=182565#post182565)

When I get home later I will check the paint I have and see what the part number says.

I just did a little searching... the paint code for 2003; which I have is YR-539M this is the same code for 2003, 2004 and 2005 on their website. Since I don't have a 2005 are you 100% positive that the code for SOP for 2005 is YR-539P and not M? Not trying to bust balls or anything, I promise. It is entirely possible that either Honda never updated their codes for the painters around the country, which is possible... or PaintScratch made a typo and isn't aware of it.

Contact a dealer and ask for the part numbers for SOP for 2003, 04 and 05... see if they tell you a different part number.

Make sense?

Sunset Orange Pearl has always been the same paint code, YR539P. If Honda changes a code or a name the other always changes with it. (except for the fun times when they call a code something different when it is on an Acura)

From what I've read it looks like they just have a typo in the number and the person that answered the email didn't catch on to that. It looked like they thought you were looking for a color they didn't have listed and just pasted in their standard 'how to find your color' instructions.

Chipmender has similar problems on their site with color names not being correct for the paint codes. Honda even gets some of the names wrong on their initial accessory bulletins so it is no wonder the aftermarket ones have trouble.

So, Trevor do you have the paint pencil for SOP?

HandA
10-07-2005, 01:08 PM
We have the chipmender brand pen. I'm not familiar with the other one that was mentioned so I'm not sure how it compares.

With the chipmender one I found it took a lot of shaking and squeezing out several test lines on a piece of paper before the color came out mixed real well (at first it was mostly clear with color separate in it.

After shaking it till my arm hurt and cleaning the feeder tube out I had a couple people compare it to the Honda paint for a match on the SOP color and the consensus was that it was a closer match than the Honda stuff.

Make sense?I have a 2004, and all you have to do is look in the inside doorframe on the driver's side. There is a sticker that has your vehicle's information. Here is a pic of mine:

OK, a guy called me earlier today from paintscratch.com. He was very helpful. He said that this was a pretty unusual situation and he hasn't seen anything like it since the '80s. (I'm not sure exactly when they were founded) Anyway, the gist of the problem is that Honda does something "special" for SOP. The color code can't be done through Dupont. I'll bet that this has something to do with SOP being the color of the original concept E.

Also, I thought that it was interesting that he said that they mix paint for every order. None are premixed. Yes, even every pen!

When I told him that there was someone here that chose the default color and thought it looked fine, he just said to hang on and he would get back to me by email. He is contacting the "main" guy, who is out of town.

I'm guessing that the default number must be somebody's close match. We will see what turns up.

spdrcr5
10-08-2005, 03:10 PM
Yes, they mix each order custom. The paint color is a dead-on match for the exterior color.

Here we go again! They have not contacted me back yet, and I just noticed that they took SOP off of their website! :(

I guess that I should have kept my mouth shut and tried the color that they had listed. (The one that spdrcr5 said was fine.) Then again, maybe they will fix it eventually and I helped out people that may buy the paint in the future. As for now, I guess that I'm screwed! Anybody have a good second best suggestion?
