: amp placement
ElementOfunk 05-03-2005, 06:35 PM hey guys what's up?
i just got a 05 NBP lx auto and i am thinking about putting a new sound system in it and was wondering where other people have put the amps in them. my sub amp i am planing on putting on the sub box so i can remove both easily but i can find a spot for the other amp(for the rest od the speakers) that is out of the way and will still leave alot of storage space.
also any one prefer sealed of ported cabs in their E and why
thanx Dan
elementology 05-03-2005, 07:30 PM you can always use double side velcro and mount it on the floor underneath your rear seats where they can breath better and attract less attention, i wouldn't drill it in because i don't know whats under there... amp under one seat, cd changer and cap under the other? just an idea
gilmour25 05-03-2005, 07:50 PM Where is the stock amp located? Could you take that one out and replace it with a more powerful one? :?
Empire 05-03-2005, 08:51 PM Where is the stock amp located? :?
Right side of the passenger footwell. But I think it's a fairly small amp.
ande713 05-03-2005, 09:27 PM there must be some space in the stock sub spot if the amps small enough
Damien8086 05-04-2005, 09:41 AM I attached my amp to the bottom of the rear passenger seat.
The stock amp is very small and so I doubt you'll be able to replace it with an aftermarket amp. I just unhooked mine and left it there.
Phreaxer 05-04-2005, 12:00 PM I attached my amp to the bottom of the rear passenger seat.
Can you put the seat up now, with the amp attached? I started thinking about this and was considering running a longer than needed length of cabling to the amp to allow the swingin motion...
DrFaulken 05-04-2005, 12:04 PM Someone posted that they put their amp in the spare tire well and got rid of their spare in exchange for a fix-a-flat type of cannister. Since the amp I own is fairly large, I imagine that's where mine will get installed.
I also read here that putting the amp on the box itself may cause problems for the amp via vibration. I don't know how probable that is, but it seemed possible to me.
Good luck, and when you do mount your amp please let us know where you've put it.

Yes, I can still put the seat up, though it is a little harder now due to the additional weight of the amp and the custom bracket. The folding rear seat "leg piece" thing that attaches the rear seat to the floor can't be folded in anymore when the seat is folded up, but it's not a very big deal for me.
SRLNCLT 05-04-2005, 03:40 PM Mine is ported and it hits hard. I wasn't expecting it to sound better then it did in my Civic but it does.

Does the LX even come with a "stock" amp? I thought it was just the EX...

haha I think your right. I installed a big 5 channel alpine, bolted to the floor, under the passenger rear seat, then ran the wiring thru some slots in the floor (invisible wiring). I used a thin 3 bar wire grate to protect the amp when hauling stuff. The amp was the exact length of the seat bottom.
Does the LX even come with a "stock" amp? I thought it was just the EX...
No, the stock amp is only in the EX model. The LX model's amp is actually housed inside the headunit itself.
N.W.Eowner 05-05-2005, 08:27 PM I mounted my amp. under the passenger front seat. Had to remove and plug the rear seat heater tube and some of the floor material. The amp used is 12.25"L x 9.25"W x 2.1"H. It just clears the seat rails and springs.

Awesome placing!
Snarf77 06-05-2005, 05:37 PM I have an amp nearly the same size. The difference, its 2.25 tall. How close were you vertically? Do you think i can get this amp to fit?
ShaneS 06-05-2005, 07:54 PM I instaled an Eclipse PA5422 amp under the passenger front seat. I had to cut the plastic that goes over the duct outlet and I had to bend the spring anchors under the seat to allow for the space. The install looks clean and professional with out hindering my cargo space, plus it is totally hidden.
N.W.Eowner 06-05-2005, 09:13 PM I too had to remove the plastic flooring down to the metal floor-pan. This gave me the necessary room for my stealth amp install.
Snarf77 06-05-2005, 09:30 PM Hmm..does anyone have a MAXIMUM height for an amp to fit under the seat? I tried sliding my amp up and under the seat and there was NO way it would fit. I would really like to make sure before I go and start cutting too much plastic. Waay easire to just buy a lower profile amp!
samwise801 06-05-2005, 10:36 PM I also read here that putting the amp on the box itself may cause problems for the amp via vibration.
Amps don't really have problems with vibration...there's not really any moving, fragile parts inside. My amps have never had any issues, and they've always been mounted on the sub boxes. Now CD changers, on the other hand...
My amps are going to go in the spare tire well...but one thing you need to remember if putting them there is ventilation. They may overheat a bit if placed under there with no fresh airflow. I was going to put a fan or two in there, possibly cut a small hole through the sheet metal of the well and have them pull air out to the outside (or wherever).
QKMPULSE 06-06-2005, 12:23 AM Hey EOF,
Ck out my installation in the image section under "BEHOLD, REAL MODS/ACCESSORIES...."
I've been attaching amps and electronics (processors, eqs, etc) to sub boxes for years w/o any probs. Way easier than trying to mount it under the seat plus you can remove it with the sub when necessary.
Thx, Phil
Johnnylightning 06-10-2005, 03:56 PM I was able to squeeze 2 JL Audio amps, one under each front seat with veryfew mods and/or cutting. A 300/4 is located under the driver's and a 250/mono under the passenger's.
Images show seats at full front or rear travel to reveal amps.
Johnnylightning 06-10-2005, 04:02 PM The capacitor sits directly behind the center console and the rear console storage space houses the crossovers for the rear JL Audio XR650 coax's.
A piece of carbon fiber plate covers the crossovers.

Johnnylightning 06-10-2005, 04:13 PM Yes, amp space tollerance is tight, but with a few under-seat mods, an amp can be placed under the front seats, leaving the rest of the space in the Element fully accessible.
Johnnylightning 06-10-2005, 04:16 PM Aftermarket Sony head and RoadyII installation were very simple and straight forward.
Johnnylightning 06-10-2005, 04:20 PM With no prior electrical or audio installation experience, I managed to do the entire EX stereo replacement myself. The Element comes apart very easily and requires just a little common sense and just a handfull of basic tools.
(edited for spelling)
admiller 06-10-2005, 06:28 PM I guess I'm a little too stubborn or a little too crazy (or maybe both), but one of the main reasons I bought the element was for its ruggedness and utility. I don't wanna take away any of that utility and ruggedness or worry and something shorting out if someone hops in the back seat dripping wet. But...I am also an audiophile and I LOVE my music to be LOUD too. The amps that Im installing are WAY too big to fit under the front seats,I dont want the hassle of removing them if I have a load of junk to toss in unexpectedly, and I dont wanna mount them to a speaker box in the back..so what to do??
I sat in my element for about an hour trying to figure this out.. and It hit me!! I'm going to fabricate a steel amp rack and mount it over the rear seats, attaching it to the "O.S" handles!!! They are plenty strong and i can also make it look fairly inconspicuous, maybe like some overhead storage bin and lighting. Its going to take me while, but I wanna do it right. I'm also planning on building the sub box where it can lean up against the back seat or lay flat behind the seat so that I can recline the rear seats, and even have it where it plugs into some sort of socket mounted in one of the rear panels, and when needed where I can just unplug it and there will be no wires laying on the ground.
FlightNurse 06-11-2005, 01:23 AM What is the cost of the StealthBox for the E ?

Johnnylightning 06-13-2005, 10:41 AM What is the cost of the StealthBox for the E ?
TonyMSRP=$500.00, but you could prolly talk 'em down to $400.00 (Sound Advice).
mtb20x 06-15-2005, 07:50 PM here's my amp. the guy who installed it put it in his element, so i figured it was a safe place (not drilling into anything). out of the way. depends on the size of the amp. mine's tiny so it fits, but i don't know.
DrFaulken 06-15-2005, 10:06 PM Thanks for that pic, I never thought of putting it there, although I'd be concerned about cargo in the back touching the amp when it's hot ... particularly plastic bags.
You mentioned there was no drilling, but it looks like the amp was attached to the plastic via screws. Or did he velcro it?

i'd be more concerned about passerby's seeing the amp and being tempting to thieves
DrFaulken 06-16-2005, 09:57 AM Good point -- although I have 5% on my back 5 windows. I haven't tried peering in there during the day, but you can't see anything @ night.
mtb20x 06-16-2005, 01:12 PM i guess i didn't word myself well. it does need to be screwed in. what i meant was there weren't any components or anything behind there that would be damaged with drilling (or at least none i know of).
i'm not really that concerned about the amp being stolen...most everyone else i know have their amps sitting right out in the open, so this is kind of out of the way. i was thinking of getting the cargo area cover thing that honda sells to kind of hide the subs/amp. as far as having stuff stolen, i'm more concerned about my deck (much easier to see and access).
ElementOfunk 06-20-2005, 01:06 PM Mtb20x that's a great place for an amp what kind of subs are you running ?
mtb20x 06-20-2005, 03:17 PM i've got 2 ten inch alpine type-s in a ported box. the box is massive. i'm not sure about the RMS and the peak and all of that kind of stuff about them though. they sound great. i got them more for quality rather than trying to blow out my own windows. sounds great with both rap and rock, so i'm happy. plus it produces enough sound that it can be heard from quite a distance (just not anything insane). i can get some more pictures of the subs/box if you want. just let me know and i'll get some.

I'm actually going to the custom stereo shop tonight to have something like this looked at. The problem with mounting on the cieling is that you can't mount amps upside down with too much success (from the advice of two installers w/25 years combined experience). If you turn an up upside down and run hard it will overheat and if you're lucky, just shut down.
I'm having them look at building a cieling type rack, with the amps in normal top up position, but having the rack match the headliner. Its the only place in the E to mount two large amps without getting in the way somehow. The wires will run up through the paneling to the headliner. If they can get the rack built, i'm going to shoot to have it done by the Big E vent. They're mostly worried about airflow and will need to see that they can build it with some type of air movement.
Hmm..we'll see.
Snarf77 06-24-2005, 09:03 AM Well, we chatted for about an hour about expectations and whatnot and came to a concensus on materials and design. The work on my roof amp rack begins 5 July and ends 8 July. Should be ready for the Big E Vent the following week.
Its going to be built out of 1/2 square tubing holding up my Xtant A4004 and Xtant A3001 about 1/2 inch away from the headliner. It shouldn't interfere with cargo capacity too much and will be removable. Sa Weet.

I have had my amp mounted upside down underneat the rear passenger seat for several months now without any problems. I have never heard that you cannot mount an amp upside down?
Snarf77 06-24-2005, 10:52 AM Hmm..I'm really no expert, I was just going by what the experts said. Heat rises and the heat sink is on the upper parts of my amp. Also, they are class A amps and apparrently they can get warm. I'm sure its done all the time without too many problems, especially if you don't run your amp hard. I'll be running my A3001 at nearly capacity, so I'll need it to stay cool.
Who is to say Crutchfield is an expert but:
