In another safety action, Honda Motor Co. Ltd. (7267.T) is recalling 14,967 2005 model-year Element wagons because the trailer harness kit has an incorrectly wired connector.

"As a result, the trailer brake lamps and turn signal lamps could operate incorrectly, or a fuse could blow causing a sudden loss of brake and turn signal lamp function," the NHTSA said.

So as long as we don't have the hitch we're fine, right? Or is this something they will fix regardless of whether the hitch and tow package is installed? We just got two 05 Es last week, so I'd hate to take it in for recall work so soon!

Yes I believe this is correct. The recall is not on the car but on the hitch kit only. see the link here to NHTSA web page. Follow this link and enter in 2005 honda element thru the search function.

thats funny that they are recalling it, I seem to have been seeing a lot of threads lately on wiring the trailer hitch and what not...was it due to this?

i thought a lot of the threads related to the trailer hitch had to with the wiring between 2004's and 2005's being a little different. ?

I have an '04 and a dealer installed Honda hitch just went to tow our trailer home from the dealership and on the trailer I only have tail lights, no brake,no signal, no reverse. The E functions fine have all lights. talked to dealer service and they say it's covered, so off to get warranty work done!!

I wonder if they'll fix my trailer harness too...even though I already rewired it so it was correct over a month ago!

I also just looked at my Owner Link. There is no mention of a recall for my vehicle. Maybe they haven't updated it yet?

To send you a recall notice they would have to have a record that you have an 05 car, and also the harness adapter. If the dealer installed the harness, that info might be available. If you bought the adapter from the parts counter, and installed it yourself, about the only way Honda could get in touch with you would be via the address on your part purchase order. That order probably does not have info on the car.

I bought it from a Honda dealer online, then had it installed by another Honda dealer locally. I'll just ask them about it when I take it in for an oil change.
