: What do people say about your E?

Drew

People seem inclined to ask me about the E or tell me their opinions... sometimes even shouting out of a moving vehicle at me on the road. So far I've gotten these comments...

Man at gas station: "Wow... that's really cool. Reminds me of the Discovery."
Woman on the road: "I like your truck! I thought it was ugly before, but that color looks nice!"
Frat boy at 3 AM on the road: "Hey dude! Is that a Ford? It's SWEET!"
My buddy Pat (who just had twins): "That's the shagmobile!"
My aunt: "That's so ugly!" (Yeah, but she drives a yellow Aztek! hahah!)
Girl in the parking lot: "I want that car!" - Her guy: "You can't get that... it's a Honda!"
Cpl. Keith Cavey, US Marine Jazz Combo: "Nice car, dork."
Guy at a gig: "It looks like a baby hummer."
Gas station attendant: "I saw that at the auto show... it's neat!"
Lead guitarist of friend's band: "It's way less faggy than your old car."
Green E Owner at a stoplight: "Yours is the first one I've seen on the road besides mine!"

So what have people been saying to you?

Good topic.

One of the main reasons I love this car is all the attention it gets. When I drive my wife's Escape, I get no looks and no comments. I feel so boring.

Anyway, I get about an even split of positive and negative comments. It seems the Element is a little like black licorice - you either love it or you hate it.

A guy at a gas station in Georgia said "buddy, she sure is a sharp one."

A lady at a red light asked what it was then just proceeded to look it over with a face like she had just smelled a fart.

All my friends dig it. One of the guys on my baseball team said it looked like a cartoon.

My uncle said I should consider sticking some giant tissue up through the sunroof.

To be honest with you, I kind of wish MORE people hated it. Then, there would be less on the road and I would be one of the few to have one. I know that's a bad attiitude, but I want this car all to myself. :D

The guys at work call my E a "toaster on wheels." And looking down on it from the 3rd floor, the ridges on the top do sorta make that description work...

Far and away the comment I hear most is:

"It looks like a baby Hummer!"

I think I've heard this at least once every single day since I've owned it. :D

Yep, we get the mini-hummer too (see post below about 3fer in Austin). We just took part in the Austin Record Convention and had to show off ours so many times it wasn't funny. My husband started offering test drives for $15 (tongue-in-cheek - nobody's touching our car)!!

I refer to mine as the mini-hummer because I replaced the Element badge with Mini HUMMER. And just a few days ago, as I was cruising down the freeway with my flames an' all, some black dude in a black sports car looks it over as he passes and then sticks his thumb DOWN out the passenger window. Guess ya can't please every one, I told the wife.

Let's see....

My sister-in-law at easter weekend "Nice Box" <keep in mind she is from Iowa and drives a purple minivan.....no offense to people from Iowa>

My co-worker, who drives a white Ford Explorer "Who's ugly car is that in the parking lot?"

My brother "Wow.....how deep are the door pockets?" followed by, "Wow that is cool the shifter is up on the dash"

My In-laws <they got the first ride in the E> "There is so much room here in the back seat" Then after the ride "You guys better get a security system because this car is going to be hot like those PT Cruiser were when they first came out"

My Mom "This car suits you....it is just too cute!"

My Husband "When are you ever gonna let me DRIVE?????"

Toll Booth Operator in Chicago "Sweet Truck"

Friends the week we bough the E "<laughing> Nice BoxCar!!!!"
Same Friends after their wedding last weekend "We are so glad you bought the E....we don't know what we would have done with out it this weekend! It is the Best car of our wedding weekend!"

I haven't really gotten many comments from strangers....mostly a lot of stares.....maybe because I am a woman and people don't think they can just come up and say something to me about my car...<shrug> who knows? Maybe they are all just scared of me??? The best was Monday at the gas station in a major thunderstorm when a business man in a Navigator was staring at the E while we both waited in our cars as our gas tanks filled....I'm all smiles :)

Peace Out

Well, it's definitely a noticeable vehicle. I've had it only since last night:

-bicyclist almost ran into a bush looking over his shoulder at it
-"Good for you!" from a stranger in a parking lot
-4 people standing around it in a parking lot ...and shaking their heads.
-It looks like a Hummer (from a friend looking down at it from 2 floors up)

This is fun!

As it should be Misfit.....just tell her "Those boots were made for walking!"

My husband actually thinks it is as cute as I do....his biggest complaint is that he never gets to drive!

I think that most people are afraid of what they don't understand....and therefore lash out at it making rude and harsh comments....alas the E is cursed with being misunderstood...damn it world....why can't you just embrace the new and different?

:P :P :P :P :P :P

Oklahoma.....

I'd better not finish that sentence. I'm a Texan. I'm prejudiced. :D

I don't think Dallas is reactionary about new things, but Dallas is such a "let me show you my money" town - in cars especially. You ARE what you drive, and if you're not putting your $ into your wheels, you suck.

You wouldn't believe the number of tricked out Escalades, Hummers, and the Escalade version of the Avalanche here.

I want everyone to be happy with their vehicle. If driving an Escalade makes you happy - do it. I just think a lot of people drive things because they're keeping up appearances.

I've reached the point in my life I have nothing to prove to anyone but myself. If I wanted to drive a 1964 rusted out VW Bug, I'd do it, and to hell with what anyone else thinks. *I* know how much money I have and I don't feel like impressing anyone by buying a Hummer.

So if I have a tattoo, drive a wild orange Element with the windows down letting my red hair blow and good music blast, be happy for me. Or climb in, I'll take you for a ride.

Okay my hubby and I are total dorks.....but ya gotta love this story...

We are driving to Sam's Club tonight....sitting at a light with the windows down and the stereo thumping and all of a sudden by husband goes "LOOK! another E".....sitting at the light going at the other direction is a Silver E.....well as you can tell this isn't the funny part.....

my husband turns down the radio and we start waving and practically screaming (I am sure the older asian woman driving the E was like what the hect is their problem.....did they just get out of the looney bin???).....this gets better....sitting next to us at the light is a middle aged woman driving a tight Accord Coupe (very nice car btw).....she has her window down too and turns to my husband (who is in the passanger seat) and goes "That sure is a cute car!"

That is my dorky cool story of the night!

i won't even have mine until this coming Thursday :D

BUT, i have had many mixed reactions already when i talk to people about getting one.

Most are positves, like, "that looks like a really cool truck"
"bet you can't wait to make the seats into a bed"
"you could practically LIVE in that thing"

then there was "don't get that, that's really gay"
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN????

Anyhow, the excitement overwhelms me each hour as the coming purchase nears!

If the Element is a "gay car", then it doesn't bother me. I'll just politely remind people that June is Pride month after all. :D

"That's really gay!" is somewhat insensitive slang for "That's weird" I think.

It's a pretty tacky statement on a couple of levels and I probably would not have a very polite response.

I'm getting excited about your E right along with you.

I think part of the excitement of getting an E is that we are CONFIDENT enough to drive a 'different' sort of car.

You only get one life, and I don't think anyone wants to lie there on their deathbed thinking "I lived everyone else's idea of what my life should be, and now it's gone, and I didn't get to be me."

Let the little wimps be afraid of their cars being called 'gay'. Not us! We're in our Element.

I've had several friends that mentioned how ugly it was until they actually got in my Element... then they decided the inside is way cool, and the outside is growing on them... oh, and we were taking my car from now on when we went anywhere.

Most people aren't saying much to me... I guess because I'm a girl and they don't want to scare me or think I won't know anything about cars anyway... but I did have a 15-year old boy walk up to me at a gas station and ask if he could walk around the car. Kind of funny.

I have busted several people gawking at my car... I usually just laugh and wave.

Once both my Mom and some of my friends saw the SOP, the first statement was "It's a box." The second line was "It's a H 1/2!" But the best line that will live forever came from my best friend who said, "Holy Sh*t! It's The Great Pumpkin!" I've gotten a lot of cool comments in the three months I've owned the E. (Wow, has it been that long?) The average person is anything from curious to appreciative. I've only gotten two negatives, but both were downright rude.

One was a bunch of 'Da Boyz' coming out of their highschool parking lot in Mommy and Daddy's super-sized Yukon, squealing tires and driving like idiots. They leaned out, flipped me off, and took to screaming about how that's the 'ugliest damn ricebox'. Isn't "american pride" great? Wheee.

The other was while pulling out of the Fry's parking lot. A posterchild for Bad Mullets, USA, driving a paint-cracked ancient El Camino felt the urge to lean out of his window and beller "Deeeaymn that's an uuuugly car", slowing down enough to make folks behind him have to wait.

I don't get what it is with rude people and cars. There's a ton of cars that I'm personally of the opinion you'd have to be braindead to purchase, but I keep those opinions politely to myself. Who am I to judge why someone likes their car, y'know?

Oh, I did have a third... being I live in the SF Bay Area there are a lot of 'more environmental than thou' types. They like to 'ticket' SUVs for their bad environmental record. Some of the more extreme will pick fights or key SUVs they think are completely wasteful. While tooling through Santa Cruz one of those shouted at me for driving a "planetkiller". When I told him it got 26mph and was a ULEV (and not a 6-11mpg Hummer) and can park in compact spaces (it just looks big) he uttered, "oh, sorry, Dude." I was amused.

like tugrik, i'm in the bay area. but lately the biggest comment i get is that i'm driving a ,"gaymobile"... after a street hockey game, i took some friends out for lunch in my E. while stopped for gas some guys pulled behind me in a rice rocket and started bagging on my E,,, until 3 big ugly white guys jumped out of my E and started bagging on them. well i guess they really didn't need gas 'cause they left reeeeal quick....

I am driving back from Chicago this morning and I am in the middle of nowhere Illinois....I pull into a gas station...fuel up...then park and go into to get a cup of coffee.....when I walk out of the "mini mart" I look over at my E and there are two big burly, hairy farmer type hunting guys....Think Uncle Jessie from the Dukes of Hazzard....they are in deep conversation pointing at the plastic panels.....they are totally blocking me from getting into my car...so I say "Fun Car, huh?" and they look up on me and say "Cool Car" and walk into the mini mart.

Gotta make ya smile when Uncle Jessie gives you the thumbs up!

So I tell my dad we picked up an Element. We weren't driving it that day - in fact we drive our other car quite a bit to advertise the "For Sale" sign in the window. He stops by a Nissan dealer  the other day (forgetting the make) and asks to see the Element. The salesman informs him that he's at the wrong dealer and that his son and daughter-in-law "bought a shoebox on wheels".

My pop stopped by today and saw it. Loves the roomy back seat, suicide doors and huge cargo room. Loved that it was $20k even more.

I've had at least 4 people approach me in various parking lots around Chicago. (My salesman's business cards w/my name on the back are freely available ;) )

The first 3 days I had it, I gave at least a dozen "guided tours" to groups of my coworkers. A few still call it "an ugly car". Love it or hate it i guess.

My parents back in Iowa saw pictures and can't wait for me to come visit so they can give it a try. I have little or no doubt they soon will be e owners :)

There's one or 2 others in Elgin (one of the larger, farther out suburbs of Chicago) that I see somewhat regularly. The looks on the road are priceless-- I almost feel guilty having such an attention grabber.

I work in a union factory where everyone drives an "American" pickup truck or minivan. Everyone gets pissed evertime they see me pulling in the lot, and a few have asked why I drive an ugly honda. I tell them that I could have bought a pickup truck like every other redneck bedwetter, but I chose to buy something unique. Hey, Pontiac! Shout out from a Mendota native here!

These "patriots" are the same people who load up at Wal Mart on Chinese goods, right? We really need some sort of sticker that points out that our E's were built in Ohio.

Most of the negative comments seem to come from men with a hangup about whatever. The ladies seem to be politer about it and even complimentary ie. "it's cute". The only time I had a problem with a guy was when he and his "significant other" walked by in the Wal-Mart parking lot. I had the back open and was folding and hanging the back seats up out of the way. Well they stopped, or rather she stopped and started asking questions about the E. As I was explaining everything I noticed his demeanor started to change to agitated. I think I could see smoke rising. Then out of the blue ---. " I would like to take a test ride sometime" says she. I replied that the nearest dealer was 60 miles away. "I didn't mean the dealer" she says. At this point Macho Man, about to explode, says "I'm leavin' " and stomps off. She smiles , turns to leave, stops, looks back and with a smile and a wink says in a hushed tone "sometime". What's a guy to do? I almost never go to Wal Mart by myself. A man could get his self killed. And it ain't Macho Man that concerns me. :)

You GO E owner! Nice move showing her the back....:-D
If he gives you any trouble Let us know....

Crackerjax, I am like, sooooooo jealous!

"Poor poor pitiful me..." Warren Zevon, R.I.P. After he died, I had the radio on and they played a song from his final (posthumously-released) disc: "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." Made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

When I got my E, waaaay back in early January 06, I would read some of these posts and think it was a little silly to be miffed when others don't like your ride. Total strangers? Hey, p*ss on 'em, right?

But now that a few people I know are starting to weigh in on the subject, it's different. I'm disappointed in people in that they seem to lack imagination and as such, it's like they're trying to clip my wings or something. :x

Many electrons have already been spilled on this issue, so I'll stop now.

Many electrons have already been spilled on this issue, so I'll stop now. Seems like the people that have a problem with the E own something similar. All the good 'ol boys in pickups seem o.k. with it. I live 60 miles from the nearest Honda dealer and at first I didn't see any Elements around here but now I see 'em everyday. Some are the same car but the numbers are increasing. When we are out driving and notice someone with an "anti E sneer" we just throw back our heads, laugh hystericaly and high five. That seems to really get their goat. So your are right p*ss on 'em. Different strokes for different folks. Oh yeah, I like Warren Zevon's music. Think he woulda' been an E owner! Will close for now as I need to make a run to Wal-Mart. Do a little "shopping"! :D

My parents hated my E at 1st. Almost a year later mom thinks its cool. She even helped me come up with a custom tag that would be funny. She wanted it to say cubicle but it was taken so my new tag tooboxy should be here soon. My dad said it looked like a box with wheels the 1st time he looked at it and need less to say it stuck. He drives a big black dodge sprinter that looks like a huge rectangle. When I pointed this out he just looked at me like I had two heads. I guess its ok to drive a rectangle but not ok to drive a box.....
As far as comments others make Ive had my share. Several people told me it was really ugly. One drive slowed down so his wife could tell me she thought it was neat. My best friend thinks its funny. And the kids from my old church never wanted to be seen riding around town in it till I tinted the windows. My 18 year old sister-in-law thought I was a complete dork for wanting an E. Utill we drove it around town she asked if I would buy her one. I told her she was way too cool to drive such a dorky truck and that maybe she should just walk.

Today when someone asked what kind of car I had and I told them I had an Element, they said "oh, so you bought one of those TRENDY vehicles". He said it all smarty-pants like.

Someone else today said..."well I don't see your car but I see the box it came in!" :-D

A couple days after I got my E I saw my neighbor at the gas station and he walked up to me and said in a joking tone and with a big smile on his face, "What'd you do, look for the ugliest car on the lot?"

Papa John's Pizza Manager, who came from behind the counter and followed me outside, to say "that is a great car, I want one, did you have to pay more to get the blue panels?"

Daughter: Wow, that is a great Bonnaroo car!!! Can I borrow it next time?
Bonnaroo is an annual 3 day music festival in Manchester TN.

Several men at gas stations have asked about it. Saying "nice car" or "nice truck".

An antique dealer unloading her Van at the antique store: "How do you like it, can I look inside, it will hold more than my Van."

Friend w/ Porsche Boxter: she is just Jealous because more people now ask me about the "E" than inquire about her Boxter, LOL we are keeping a count.

If the Element is a "gay car", then it doesn't bother me. I'll just politely remind people that June is Pride month after all. :D

As was said to me about a fellow gay employee at work last week, the world does need flair.

Iskie

(then there was "don't get that, that's really gay"
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN????)
Where did the "Thats Gay" stuff start? Oh I remember now, in school.

Are you seeing a pattern here? We have TV shows telling "Str8" guys how to dress. "Sirius" radio shows telling stories about our "Out" lives!
Now were picking out Honda's winning lineup!
And don't think "Martha" didnt get her swirl on when she was in the hooskow!
Taste is a "Learned" behavior! And its about time, some people learn it...

I personally couldnt fathom driving a beater anymore! And I didnt want to be the "Soccer Mom Queen!" in the parking lot at work.
So I bought an E!

All of those guys, and their big trucks, and their wives with the hummers, and Tahoes, eventually will have to buy a new one. Probably with way less miles than our E's will gain. Less stability over the long haul. And way less reliablity! Dont forget the gas mileage. It takes under 25 bucks now to fill her gut, merely a fraction, of the consumption of those other beasts.

So when someone makes a nasty face, or a smarta$$ comment, just give them a big ol FINGER!
And remember that their "Carbon Footprint" is gonna be way bigger than yours....
In an instance, when size matters, just be glad for once, that yours is smaller!
 :-D  :D

My fiancee drives it more than I do, but she said gets people asking her about it or gawking over it all the time. Last week at church I went to get something off the back seat and there was a family getting into a mini van a couple spaces away and they were all looking at the car as I walked up (I think the kids liked the color). When I opened the back suicide door, all the kids were like "COOOOL!!! How'd he do that?!?!" That's really the only comment I have gotten when I was driving though.

Okay,

I've told this story before, but it's definately on topic.

Not to long after I bought it, I was gassing up and the twenty something young lady who had just finished filling up the car next to me comes over and asks "can I touch it?". As I'm nearly 50, all I could croak out was "pardon?". Then she says, "Can I touch your car? It's the ugliest thing I've ever seen. Whatever possessed you to buy it?."

Needless to say, the conversation went downhill from there.

My mom - "God.. I love this car... it's so weird.. it just suits you!" LMAO

My sister- "It's like you drive a Short Bus or something... " HAHA

My dad - "You really like this thing?"

My best friend Kenn - "Lesbians and boxes just go together... I am going to call it the LEZBOX!!! *CACKLES*" HAHAHAHAAHA

Random people - "That thing doesn't get good gas mileage does it?"; "It's so strange.. I love it!"; "I bet that thing was expensive!"; "Can I ride in it?"; "That thing looks like a toaster"; and last but not least; "Is that one of those xBs?" AHHHHH! LMAO.

I would have pointed rudely at them and laughed back!
Of course I see people laughing in my rear view mirror all the time, but they are usually pointin' at my "I brake for turtles" bumper sticker while they laugh. Matters not a bit to me either way though...I figure the rudest people have chronic bitterness and insecurity and are just plain nasty and thus aren't worth even a second of my time. Waste of valuable resources.....mine.

First comment from a small boy "Wow, what a cool car!" as he saw me opening the side doors together

Yesterday - "Your car was built for fun. I love the colour!"

Last week - " This is the coolest car" from friend in backseat of car in traffic jam.

Before I bought her, I pointed out an E to a friend and she said it was the ugliest car she had ever seen.

Most people appear not to know that it is rude not to make at least five comments about the E every time they see it.

I've only had my E for about a month now, and I think I've already heard "it's so cute" about 20 times. Drives me crazy. Guess that's why Dodge ran their pre-emptive "it's anything but cute" campaign for the new Caliber.

With my new 2006 Biobox I get lots of comments, Cute, Love the color, Nice Cube, etc...

Pretty fun! I just wish other E-owners would wave back when I wave at them. Instead, they just give me a weird deer in the headlight look.

MANY awesome comments above mine, and I love 'em all! Full credit to all.

I can't believe how many Es I see on the road these days. Unfortunately, they're on the road passing the other way so tagging them is not an option. I've learned to simply smile to the driver as they go by.
A vast majority of the time they're not even looking at me, but at least I've tried.

I love Opie, and those who have ridden in him know it and are simply impressed. That's what matters to me.

At Trader Joe's this weekend, the best open parking space just happened to be next to a NBP EX. When I came out, there was a GalGreen EX there, too.
The owner was just getting out. His comment: "They just keep getting better, don't they?!?"
Last week at Home Depot when I loaded ArEtha with ~1500 lbs. of construction materials: "That's the most FUN-looking truck I've seen - what is it?"

She's a keeper!

My buddy was having his bachelor party at a campground and I pulled up to the site in the E to say hi and show it off before I went over to the visitor parking lot and one of the guys said, "Hey, why don't you leave the Scion here and play music for us" don't worry, I didn't hurt him, I let it slide :) . Then when I got back to the site, one of the other guys said something like "what kinda car was that?" and before I could answer my buddy said it was a scion. And then I snapped, if anyone calls it a scion one more time, I'll kick ya in the nuts. And then I corrected them. They thought it was pretty funny. My friends for the most part think the car is ugly, but then again they are jealous cause they all still drive college beaters. They do admit that the E is very functional though.

..and it is a 4X4 ?? wow

Interesting, I have been getting a few of these lately as well. Perhaps it's partly a function of the lack of badging. So many vehicles these days have large stickers on them proclaiming that they have 4WD - I like the fact that the E doesn't advertise anything.

The 'ugly' comments seem to have died off - maybe because there are more Es around every year.

We took all the logo's off our E so there's no badging at all. Many people do not know what it is.In places where there is no Honda dealer therefore no Elements around,no one knows what our E is.....we've heard that's so cool...to that's one butt ugly car....
