this is going to sound stupid, but, all the people who are putting 235/70/16s on their e's are doing this with alloy wheels. is there any reason i cannot put these on the steel wheels??? paulj has 225/70/16s on his steel wheels. was that a size choice, or are 235/70s not a good idea? thanks.

235s should fit on the steel wheels just as well as on the alloys. I went with 225s by choice, both because that size was available with the tire model I wanted, and because I did not want to push the tire clearance issue. I wasn't trying to get the largest possible tires, I wanted the most practical choice for my mix of driving - lots of wet urban, some highway, a bit of snow, and some backroads. I also had to consider the fit of a full spare under my storage platform.

can you fit a 225/70 cooper in the spare wheel well??

No - the full size spare is bolted to the floor in place of a rear seat. The spare compartment now carries tools. This is for my 2-person camping arrangement.
