There seems to be a lot of talk about pda gps units lately.
I blame this all on Bigfoot :)

I got my "used" new iPaq 5550 last week from Ebay and a new Navman 3450 GPS sleeve from Ebay as well. I went this route because it started off as a possible extremely cheap way to get a gps unit. I already had an old Palm M505. However, it turned out a gps unit for the M505 was not much cheaper than a getting a newer unit, so I decided to get a little faster PDA to run the GPS.
All in all, I still saved about $300 over what I was going to spend on a new TTG300. So thats good. Being a PDA is just a "bonus" plus the iPaq I got also has WiFi and BT which makes it more fun to play with.

I have only had 2 days to really try and play with it and that has been on trips to and from my office. So really this is not much of a test of the unit.

GPS signal strength is outstanding so far, even with the unit in my car using the suction holder in the upper left hand part of the windshield.
GPS tracking seems to be right on target (ha-ha bad pun). When I cross an intersection it is right on, speed is dead on to my speedometer on the dash.

Maps seems pretty damn nice as well. I compared them to my buddies GPS unit and my maps must be newer because I have roads listed that his unit does not show.

Now for the "quirks". I have only turned on the POI for gas and banks. However it tends to show an awful lot of banks. It had one listed as being next to me when I was next to a fast food resturant :?

The other issue is either in my "configuration setup" or truely an issue with the software. It tends to pick routes that are not very smart (ie local roads verses HWY). It has an option to chose either shortest or quickest routes. Call me a dullard, but I do not get it. If you are taking the shortest route than would it not also be the quickest???

It does auto reroute very fast when you do not make the turn it had planned. I tested this a lot as I tend to stay on the HWY as much as possible to avoid traffic lights.

The last quirk I am not sure if it is a map issue or software. My neighborhood is off a divided street that has a center median seperating the lanes. On the way home yesterday it wanted me to pass the enterance (which was on my left across the median), make a U-turn at the light down the street and come back. Now that would have been fine as well, but does seem a little weird? If I was in a "strange" area I was not familiar with it would ahve confused the hell out of me.

I have been thinking of purchasing the Tom Tom Navigotar software and installing that to see how well it compares, but I really need to make some real trips to check it out.

I have a small 1hr drive next week to the local Busch Gardens (bd present for my older sons) and in August a nice trip to Harpers Ferry for some camping and tubing.

I'll keep you all posted.

A rather astute observation of the speed as judged by the GPS compared to that indicated on your speedometer...the Element seems to have one of the most accurately calibrated speedometers I've ever seen. (maybe its just me, but I can't "feel" how fast I'm going in my E and it makes me mental.)

I've also pondered the virtual paradox of "quickest vs. shortest" route since my TTG now has those very choices after a recent firmware upgrade. Shortest may be taking alot of local side roads at a given average speed of maybe 30mph and yes, mileage wise, the shortest distance between point A and B. Now quickest may take you on highways where you can average 50+mph, go several miles out of the way, but still arrive sooner.

POI's are often quirky since alot of businesses change hands/close/open more often than a map/software update would indicate. (a number of eatery POI's near me show the previous establishment's name)

The quirk you mention about the entrance to your neighborhood...was the turn you usually take across the median shown on the display? Or did it just want to make you do a U-turn? It may either be an oversight in the map data or part of the software's algorithm to prefer one turn over another. (the TTG seems to prefer rights over lefts, and sometimes wants you to make 3 rights, instead of one left:mad: )

Overall it sounds like you've got yourself a cool setup there. Good luck and keep us informed. Threads like these seem to make pretty good buying guides for those looking into such items.

I've been using my laptop loaded w/ Streets and Trips 2005 and Delorme 2005 for over a year now and had some of the same issues. I travel a lot and notice POI's as hotels/restaurants aren't right on but I've always been able to see what I'm looking for from my vehicle.

I can guarantee you that the requested u-turns and etc are due to inaccuracy by the software. I've noticed many frontage roads and one-ways one piece of software has and another doesn't.

I just wanted to mention that software that will re-route after a wrong turn is a must! I've got Delorme setup to re-route at 500ft and it’s saved me many headaches.

If you or anyone has any questions about GPS software, feel free to ask as I've used just about everything out there. I know some places to get software/hardware cheap.

I'm in the process of picking up an E (05 Fuji, I'm praying I can find one) and there are two instant installs: removal of XM for Sirius which will probably be connected to a permanent GPS device (haven't decided what type I want yet)

Quickest and Shortest Routes are rarely the same route. It could be shorter to take all side streets in terms of miles to go from point A to B. But in terms of driving time it could be faster to take a Highway to go from that same A to B. You could cover more miles at a higher speed than you can driving at a slower speed with more traffic and traffic lights.

A shorter drive could take you through a Business District that would be shorter but have more traffic as one example.

See the difference now?

Here are some really bad pictures of the setup I am using right now.
I say really bad because I took these at almost 9PM tonight so the lighting was really poor.

I wanted to show how the suction cup actually works pretty damn good, I have 6 sats linked in the picture. Plus I wanted to show how far off to the side it was (out of my front field of view) for driving. However it is at the perfect height for a quick glance.
Today was pretty damn bright and I still could see the screen OK.
Have yet to figure out the "cleaniest" install for the cables. I plan to run a 12v outlet under the dash for it, plus I think I might get a external antenna just ensure the E will always have a good signal, plus I want to pick up a small speaker to jack into the unit to amplify the voice commands.
When the unit is up I can route the cables nicely and mostly hidden, the hard decision is what to do with them when the unit is not in place??
