Pet Barrier

Has anybody found a pet barrier that works in the Element? I've tried the tubular kind, like the picture below, but it won't stay in place and my german shepherd finds a way around it.

Thanks, Phil

No, but I was wondering about that myself. Who is the manufacturer of the one you have?

It's just a generic, I found it on ebay. It's too short, it really doesn't stay in place. I found one at Petsmart online: http://www.petsmart.com/dog/shopping/auto%5Fbarriers/products/product%5F15701.shtml

It looks like it will fit.

Let me know how it works for you. I saw one on www.mats.com but I don't know if it would be any better.

I was disappointed to learn that Honda doesn't offer a pet barrier for the Element. We've discovered that our dog's crate can fit only if both rear seats are hung up along the sides. This makes it impossible to see out of the back windows, and we can't have any passengers.

I thought I'd try using a barrier to confine the dog to the back. My concern is that I would prefer that she be better protected (her molded plastic crate, which fits easily in our minivan, not only keeps her secure, but affords some measure of protection in the event of an accident).

The current Doctors Foster & Smith catalog shows a heavy gauge steel mesh barrier by "Kennel-Aire." It is made of 2" sq. black electroplated heavy-gauge steel mesh. Plastic buffers protect vehicle interior. They claim it "installs in minutes -- no suction cups or holes to drill." It's item No. GR-5521 in the catalog. Price $60.

Foster & Smith also features a "pet net" (item #GR-6557) that they describe as a "flexible net restraint separating pets and driver. Designed to be mounted behind front seat or behind rear in some vehicles. Attaches with durable plastic dual lock system that works like velcro." Price $70.

I'm also considering a safety harness as an alternative to the barrier. But unless I could use it between the back seats, it probably wouldn't be a good idea. I'd rather not have the dog sit on one of the seats (the photos in the F&S catalog show the dogs sitting on the car seats). F&S offers a couple of car safety harnesses for dogs of all sizes. The harnesses work with the car's safety belt. The dog can sit or stand comfortably while remaining secure. The harnesses range in price from $10 to $30.

Could the safety harness be modified to attach to the child restriants in the back?

That's an interesting thought. I'll try to find out from F&S, but I doubt they'll be able to tell me. I'll probably go ahead and order the harness and see if there is a way to integrate it with the child restraints.

How about a Carabiner?

Another good idea and fortunately a relatively inexpensive item. As it is I think I'm going to wind up spending almost as much on accessories for my dog as I am on those offered by Honda.

Noted some of our friends are disappointed that the Element doesn't do 'everything'. Life is a compromise though. What it does do it does extremely well, I think.

Just to prove it, I have my second one!

Here's how I solved the pet storage problem. The net screen is from Toys-R-Us. I made a vinyl cover for the seats so clean up is a snap (I hope).

Just some thoughts.

Inspiron, I was wondering if you ordered that barrier from Petsmart. Did you order the full size?

I am struggling with Dogs in my lap as I drive. I have removed the back seats in order to haul antiques for my business. I have tried both types of commercial barriers, the grid and the tube neither work, expanse to tall. This week I have 6 bungie cords crisscrossed across the back of the front seats covers pulling and tugging, and yet still the critters persist. I also bought netting and elastic to create something. What I want is a small cargo net to install inbetween the front seats. Volvo wagons have a beautiful cargo net barrier that comes standard. Should I manufacturer this net rig?
