well, i'm not in canuck-land, but i use a canuck insurance co-Wawanesa

they have awesomely good prices in the california market and would assume that they do in canada too.

the only problem is that they will only take you if you have a spotless driving record.

Royal Bank has been by FAR the cheapest that I have found here in Canada. Everyone I know who has checked their rates has ended choosing Royal.

Yes, they do insurance. ;-)

You have to take exchange rates into account.....cant make a fair comparason between US and canadian rates.....I live in toronto and it would prob be cheaper if i lived outside the city.

On an off chance, call any associations you might be eligible for. Alumni, professional, union, employee group plans.
That's how I got mine. At the time the next cheapest was RBC insurance.

We have government insurance coverage(SGI) which is supposed to be the cheapest in the country, plus they have good driver discounts for every year of having a clean driving record. We pay around $950 for the year, the real price is about $1050 I think. My wife is part of the paraplegic assoc., so the registration fee is waived as well. It's not too bad but we have YO' fault insurance.....if the other driver hits you and it's their fault it's still YO' fault for being there ! They streamline your treatment and get you back to nowhere close what you were pre accident. They know best because every injury is the same for every person. It's pretty pathetic, they don't even have any specialists to deal with head injuries resulting from accidents. Every new injury amounts to an experiment, because they have no knowledge. Sorry just went off on a frustrated rant !! Can ya tell of a bad experience?? :)

My response would be the same as 'Frew Lad's. My insurance (Johnson) is via a group deal (as an alumni). They insured my E for half the price I used to pay for a neon (with Economical). Yikes! And that is with a not-so-great driving record  .

I came across this today.......

Study shows Ontario drivers pay more for insurance

Ottawa, Ontario - A study by the Consumers' Association of Canada released yesterday shows that Ontario drivers pay, on average, 45 per cent higher automobile insurance rates than those in British Columbia.

The release used 3,776,997 rate quotes across 300 diverse rating groups, and provides a detailed comparison of rates between Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. The study shows that the average auto insurance rate in Ontario is $2,383, while it is $1,324 in British Columbia. The high rates are not confined to Toronto; they were also noted in smaller cities such as Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, Windsor, Sudbury, Kingston and Ottawa.

The study also shows that difference in rates do not reflect differences in policy coverage. It notes that in Ontario there is a government-mandated deductible of $30,000 on all injury claims, while in Alberta the government has mandated a cap of $4,500 on injury claims. British Columbia does not have these restrictions.

Among the study's key findings:

Ontario has much higher auto insurance rates than Alberta or British Columbia, while Toronto has higher rates than Vancouver or Calgary.

Auto insurance rates vary significantly across the Greater Toronto Region.

Ontario has the highest auto insurance rates in larger cities, compared to cities in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan; it also has the highest rates in mid-sized cities and in smaller communities, compared to similar cities and communities in British Columbia and Alberta.

Vancouver's auto insurance rates for a perfect driver are lower than any rate quote from any company in Toronto.
The Consumers' Association noted a pattern among independent brokers which it says is "clearly not in the consumer's interest"; a typical broker may only sell policies from one or two insurance companies, although there are almost a hundred operating in Ontario. "Many of these brokerage firms have financial ties to insurance companies, which limits real consumer choice," says Bruce Cran, president of the Consumers' Association. "An overwhelming compelling message has emerged from the Study for consumers in Ontario. Shop widely among many brokers and use the Internet to find the lowest auto insurance quote."

Though I'm a proud employee of Illinois Farmers Insurance Company (Claims Litigation), recent posters need to keep in mind this is a Canadian thread, and input from U.S. members is utterly and totally irrelevant. Duh. :???:

In other words, if you (some, imaginary "you") know nothing (0, as in "zero") about insurance claims underwriting, it will not make you appear particularly intelligent to talk about "what you pay" for coverage wherever you happen to live. Unless, of course, it happens to be in Canada (which is not merely our northern-most state; but a sovereign country of it's own)!
