: Chevy HHR
ElementMaster 07-28-2005, 08:20 AM Anyone seen this thing? When i was driving through Lake Placid I saw one at a dealer and I was like...wow gm molded a pt Cruiser with one of their new vans and shrunk it. i dont like this thing but I can tell it will probably be popular.

Pictures are deceiving it is actually not that big.
chrhamil 07-28-2005, 09:19 AM I drove one of these a few days ago. I tried to take some pictures of it, but my stupid camera phone didn't work. Anyway it drove well, I drove the one with the 2.4 liter engine and it was pretty much loaded. I liked that it had a sun roof over the driver, and that the gauge cluster was nice looking and easy to see. The interior felt a little cramped compared to the Element, of course pretty much every vehicle I have gotten into after getting the Element has felt that way. It seemed a little faster than my Element when I was driving it, but when I got back in my Element it was about the same. I think it was that it was so much lower than the Element, so you felt like you were going faster. I liked it, but it could not replace my e bacause of the amount of usable space the e has. My model planes could not fit in the HHR, but do well in the Element.
pxpaulx 07-28-2005, 09:56 AM please, no more hhr threads, please.
Hondamade4dogs 08-27-2005, 05:27 PM I looked at the HHR today...what a disappointment it was...I am glad I traded the PT Cruiser for the Element and not waited for the HHR,,
Empire 08-27-2005, 08:54 PM please, no more hhr threads, please.
Yeah, we already have an HHR thread started back at the begining of this year.
http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11482&page=1&pp=10
I would go ahead and lock this thread but I lack mod powers in the "General Buzz..." section.
It's like Kryptonite.....draining.....getting....weaker...* gasp *
WartHog 08-28-2005, 12:04 AM I passed one of those things on the road the other day -- didn't know what it was -- but it caught my eye. Not in a good way.
I came home and mentioned it to SWMBO, told her I saw a reincarnated 1954 Chevy panel truck.
BOXER 08-28-2005, 02:34 AM I will not knock it cause I like the thing. Modified my way, it could look cool and it would save some gas too. 172 HP, 30 miles per gallon, 350 lighter, $21K fully loaded (even with a remote engine start and automatic cabin cooling system) It makes it attractive.
This thing was built on the 1949 Suburban ideal. Picture it with retro style 20" wheels and all black, It would look like the car from spy hunter.
I love my E but there are other cars funky looking cars out there that are nice and more economical.
gibroni 08-28-2005, 03:27 AM Bah! No dash mounted shifter. No suicide rear doors. No composite quarter panels. No fully reclining rear seats. Not a Honda...
Green Machine 08-28-2005, 10:08 AM After my horrible experiences with GM products I will never buy one again. The main reason I bought the Element is because it is a Honda.
rodaniel 08-28-2005, 10:14 AM Doesn't do much for me but I'll admit that I do like the retro styling of the grill and hood. Sorta reminds me of the redesigned Dodge RAMs when they first came out several years ago.
sprocket_old_boy 08-28-2005, 09:01 PM Where did you get your information on the $21,000 fully loaded?
BOXER 08-29-2005, 12:30 AM From the dealer in my area where I bought both my Silverados from. There is also an artilcle in autoweek that has it in that price range.
As for those putting down GM products
I must of been lucky because I've owned two chevy trucks and abused them like you would not believe. I did not have any problems with the trannys or motors. I did have a coil blow out on one and a front left bearing bust but overall they were good trucks. I dont have the latest one because someone loved the truck more than I did and took it. As soon as I get a chance I will buy another one.
My business uses nothing but chevy trucks and vans that run 18 hours per day, we have over 30 in our fleet. These fit our needs and are very reliable, we would not use them if they proved otherwise.
Do you know why the the HHR and the PT look similar? They were designed by the same designer. Oh, and they are both made in the same town in Mexico. Funny, ha, ha.
Hondamade4dogs 08-29-2005, 06:28 AM Chevy is like 5 years behind the retro game...they are playing catch up to Chrysler......HHR...Chevy answer for the 2.5 million PT Cruisers out there.... :-o

Interestingly, my family has owned a wide range of GM vehicles over the years. My dad's Chevy trucks were always pretty bulletproof. The GM cars we have owned have had a rediculous amount of problems. I've been driving Honda's for 8 years without a problem, and I got my Mom and brother to switch over to Honda's. My dad is still going strong with the Silverado line. GM keeps their car and truck devisions pretty seperate on the manufacturing side. I believe the HHR comes from their car division......
rodaniel 08-29-2005, 07:20 PM Jeez, I saw one of these in person today in the parking lot at work and, well, it ain't great.
The pictures and the scale of the front end make you think this'll be something about the size of a Durango, but no, it's actually very short. This is, in essense, a station wagion with flared fenders - a shorter and boxier PT Cruiser. I parked next to the HHR when I returned from lunch and the thing looked puny in comparison to the Element.
Theelements 09-04-2005, 12:34 AM saw 2 of em today, they look just like the PT Looser
BOXER 09-17-2005, 03:51 PM More I look at this Car, the more I like it. Don't get me wrong, I like my E but this car is nice. I went to an Angel's game on thurs and they had the supercharged Cobalt and the HHR on display. This one had leather interior in it.
This is just my opinion it doesn't have to be yours.
Krtoflas 09-17-2005, 04:17 PM my mom just purchased an hhr the other day. Personally I HATE American cars but, I dont think it was a bad buy for the price and for being an American car. It rides way better than the pt the she also has. It offers way more than the pt did when she bought it and has a hell of a lot more power. Would I buy one. Hell no but for someone like my mom that does not drive much and like the pt cruiser it is a great buy. All of you people that try to compare to the element or any Honda product are silly. They are not even on the same scale. Chevy vs Honda common. Compare it to Chrystler or pontiac. then rate it.
jack e 09-17-2005, 04:57 PM the back end isnt terrible, but that freekin front end has to go!!!
chimphappyhour 09-17-2005, 09:01 PM I dunno, I still like the ones done up by the west coast speed shops. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised to see more of these start showing up as folks start thinking about getting something more economical as a daily driver than a suburban.
Element Art 09-18-2005, 04:29 PM It's more of a station wagon idea. Low and no 4 wheel drive. More function following form... I'll stick with the ultimate utility vehicle, my Element.
symbasys 09-20-2005, 02:54 PM I think someone forgot to tell GM that the retro ship has sailed....
3rdHonda 09-20-2005, 04:12 PM I think someone forgot to tell GM that the retro ship has sailed....
...and the ugly ship refuses to sink.
Andy_B 09-22-2005, 10:26 AM eh...HA.
I am a Quailty Eng. for the seat manufacturing company. I have been rolling in one of these for a few weeks now (company car). They are a fregging dog.
Its a total rip off of a PT Cruzier and Dodge Durango. Hence the same designer did both cars.
3rdHonda 09-22-2005, 11:03 AM Hence the same designer did both cars.
Yeah, but that's no excuse. The same designer did the New Beetle (or at least the old New Beetle; not sure about the new New Beetle) and the Audi TT, and those two--though they shared some design elements--differed enough from each other to both be interesting. Surely this guy could've done something to distinguish it.
Oh well...why do we even care about the HHR?
i personally like it alot!
i think its a cute little car/truck/suv whatever and it fits into the market very well. i think that it will affect the PT sales and a few others like hte VIbe and matrix as they are IMO in the same/similar category of usage.
i'd buy one if i needed something other than my E. but i don't.
gfxguy 09-22-2005, 01:42 PM I wouldn't buy one, but I think it looks pretty cool. The market is getting a little over crouded with retro and boxy, though.
Hondamade4dogs 09-23-2005, 06:49 AM Your right, Nissan is bringing the Cube here, Toyota is the FJ, Dodge Caliber, Ford fairlane, Mini Wagon, Scion Xb , FedEx cardboard mailer...Everyone wants to be the Box !
jdiane 09-23-2005, 07:25 PM I saw one in the parking lot today-- looks like a PT cruiser had a one night stand with a Scion Xb...
spdrcr5 09-23-2005, 08:37 PM I saw one today and thought it was pretty damn ugly. Think the PT Cruiser is a nicer looking vehicle. What really bothered me about how it looks is how long it is. The proportions are just off, it is an awkward looking thing.
aquilles10 09-25-2005, 12:12 PM I am the only one that kind of likes it?
I test drove one the week they came out, and I have to say I was impressed with it, especially considering the price of the one I drove (well under $20k). Maybe it's beacuse my expectations of the General's cars are so low. It's isn't a rocket ship, nor is it going to be more utilitarian than an Element, but it was good for what it is, a small wagon. Granted, I am as sick of the retro design (i.e. lazy) car designs as much as anybody, and don't like most of GM's cars, but I happen to think the HHR is more than decent little wagon, and better than the aging as we speak PT Cruiser.
joeBoxer 09-25-2005, 12:39 PM why should we focus our interest on yet another late to the party, fugly GM automobile? these are the same dolts who gave us the aztec for god's sake. this is just more visual pollution on the freeways. and how about the new hummer h3? a brand new vehicle that is overpriced AND way underpowered. how can a company bring out a NEW item and then not give it enough power? they are clueless. they have maybe one decent car - the new solstice and the saturn version of it. maybe the corvette. every single other GM product is complete crap.
BOXER 09-25-2005, 07:57 PM I wonder how the windshields will hold up? I wonder if the tires will wear after only 8k miles? I wonder what people say about those who drive wierd looking boxy things? Icky! It has seating for five! ( just a small example of the number complaints posted on this forum)
Ive had very positive experiences with GM products. JoeBoxer, have you owned a GM vehicle lately? You cant just say that these cars are peices of crap just without personal experience or justification.
Lately I have seen more and more of these HHR's on the road. Sad to say but they seem to be catching on faster than the Elements are. At lest here in the L.A. and O.C. areas.
And to the underpowered comment, I was going up the 15 freeway on my way to wrightwood as my E was struggling to climb up this hill with my AC on, an HHR passed me up like if it was not working as hard as the E. This car must of had the AC on too because the windows were closed. My car has and exhaust and an intake to assist in the performance department and it seemed weak in comparison to the HHR. For those who live in Cali and have traveled up that highway, you know what I mean.
I'm not trying to promote this car. I like it, but Im not getting one. Im not going to knock it because it seems to be a good vehicle. I will be in the market for another vehicle soon for personal use and I have the new Lexus IS 350 in mind.
Doesnt the Ridgeline look like a copy of the Aztec? How original is that?
Joe C 09-26-2005, 07:12 AM I pulled up next to one of these the other day at a stop light. It is not something that I would buy and it does not appear to be very practical. Is beauty is in the one of the beholder?
Yes, I still have the images of all of the bad GM products from years ago. Remember how they designed things to break very quickly (center console lid & the glove box lid, and the list goes on)? Why is that GM is having to give their cars away? When I bught my E, the sales person stated that the big deals that Dodge, GM, and Ford offered to sell there cars at big losses did not phase their sales.
My questions are:
how many times will this vehicle be in the shop over the next 5 years?
how well will it keep its resale value?
I pulled up next to one of these the other day at a stop light. It is not something that I would buy and it does not appear to be very practical. Is beauty is in the one of the beholder?
isn't beauty in the eye of the beholder for anything? women, cars and art all are seen differently by people. some like it some don't.
My questions are:
how many times will this vehicle be in the shop over the next 5 years?
as a proud owner of a 1999 Grand Prix GTP I can say that my car has been in to the shop for 0, yes zero issues. The only 'repairs' i've done are wheel bearings and that was over 100,000km (last year). Other than regular maintenence (oil changes, brakes, transmission flush, coolant flush) nothing else has been needed. That is quiet the accomplishment as i've fully modified the car to over 300whp and have not been 'nice' to it with regards to driving habits, drag racing it regularly (on the track, no worries). I've had the motor completely apart twice to put in my own camshafts (aftermarket performance), installed headers, full exhuast, ported the supercharger, added an LS1 TB, the list goes on and on and the thing still hasn't failed. I'd say thats some QUALITY car.
how well will it keep its resale value?
ok that's just funny with 0% financing and all the other rebates/incentives that GM offers (like most NA cars). That said when a car lasts 7yrs plus resale really isn't an issue at that point. I know what i'd get for my GTP today and i wouldn't sell it because i know i wouldn't be happy with that dollar value, that said there are few cars that i would consider as a comparable replacement for what the GTP is within a reasonable pricepoint. There aren't too many cars sub $35K (price range i could afford now) that can haul 5 people and have 400crank horsepower while getting 30mpg on the highway.
what's better i'll have over 450whp by next spring and still be over 30mpg. not much compares to that
to each their own, many people do not like GM, i am one who does to an extent.

Joe C 09-26-2005, 08:35 AM AKA,
Thanks for sharing your positive experience with a GM product. I have three friends that have purchased Malibus over the last 5 years. All of them have been plagued with break, A/C, and trani problems. Additionally, the faulty hub caps had to be cut off and replaced everytime they had a tire balance or rotation. My friend's mom bought a Trailblazer when it first came out and traded it in after constant problems.
Hondamade4dogs 09-26-2005, 04:51 PM I like the HHR...They have it in Orange too. It is like $15450...Saw one the other day... Man it was cool ! I like the PT Cruiser a little better, but I have one of those....Just wish I would of bought the Orange Dream Cruiser :-o
rymo926 10-06-2005, 12:33 AM i was gonna get the matrix 170hp 8K redline, but the suicide doors sold me

regular maintinence?? that 4 time a year event costing $$$.
Why cant Gm make cars that can go more than 3000miles without adjusting? Why do the american companies have to give their cars away? why do they hold no value? Why does their reliability rating suck (at least in the car dept)
Hondamade4dogs 10-11-2005, 12:20 PM Why Why Why? you sound like Jan Brady.....
ElementalFox 10-11-2005, 02:07 PM :) Marsha Marsha Marsha!
Miss Ellie & Co. 10-11-2005, 06:39 PM I dunno why everyone is dumping on the HHR. It's not like you have to go buy one. They are really cool in my opinon. Chevy is selling them quicker than Rolling Stone tickets. And why dump on GM? Everytime the US economy needs a jump start GM comes to the rescue with 0.0% APR and Employee Pricing. The end result is lots of American goods are being sold and that benifits all of us.
Hondamade4dogs 10-11-2005, 06:52 PM Good point ! I like the alot of the GM cars,,,an Orange HHR ...maybe even the Orange Pontiac Aztek !

I’m going to be honest. I like my E, but I’ve not had a car that I had to take back to the dealer because of suspension problems within the first three weeks of owning it. My suspension still pops then I make a slow turn just like everyone else’s. The windshield cracks with any little thing making contact with it. I’m on my second windshield and I already have cracks on this one, it will need to be replaced soon. My radiator hose leaked a month ago and made a mess of my engine. My moon roof rattles so much when it’s opened that it now stays closed. My AC unit is presently making a whistling-whining noise with an occasional “clink”. I have to get it to the dealer soon. Thank heavens for warranties.
By the way my E is only eight months old. So yes, by your standards my E is a PIECE OF SH!T.
“Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get”
symbasys 10-12-2005, 12:43 AM I've owned several GM cars in the past, and had pretty good luck with all of them. The last one was an '87 Buick LeSabre that I bought used and kept for 7 years. The only problem I had with that car was the A/C kept breaking (Florida is tough on 'em.) But for such a large car, I could drive it with one finger, and it had the guts to pass just about anything on the road. The most amazing thing about that car was it was a huge 4-door sedan with all sorts of interior room, and it still got almost 30 MPG on the highway. I sorta miss that car. :|
Anyway getting back to the topic at hand, my only bone of contention with the HHR is its lack of originality. I think they could have come up with something really unique instead of an obvious knockoff of the PT Cruiser. Seems like GM wasted a perfect opportunity to blow potential buyers away with a really cool, unique new product.

yes your car (element )and GM cars are built by Americans...and unlike the true japanese car built quality...Japan worker is a part of the company and is proud about their cars, and will stay late to make sure the product is the best.

$.03 depositedto anyone who owns a 4000lb fwd pontiac gran prix gtp...what are you smoking as that car handles so poorly if you ever try to push the limit...i've been racing cars for the past 4 years and every once in a while run across one and got to drive one at the track...they may have power but out side of a straight line in a higher gear they are pretty worthless...brakes are ok but after repeated stops from 100+mph 4000lbs on a fwd car just kill the tires and fade gets pretty bad that you get scared after the 2nd lap...what's funny is you get passed by all sorts of smaller less powerful cars (integra gsr & type r, celica gts, funny but not an svt lightening) b/c they make up all that distance the big block supercharged fwd behemoth makes on the straights...heck my 944 with only 150hp can lap this car in 10 laps or so...what's even funnier my 180whp mazda protege5 wagon (had a turbo on it) was 2 seconds a lap faster than the 340whp gtp the owner was bragging about
gran prix gtp sports saloon...it maybe a nice comfy cruiser but trying to cut 400whp+ in that car is pretty much a waste of time...get a real sports sedan or coupe with rwd or awd and enjoy driving a real driver's car
lwclancers 10-14-2005, 11:14 AM my bro in law just bought a 2002 chevy venture minivan with 125k miles on it for $3500!

Um, im not sure I follow your argument. Why would I be concerned with how well it handles at 100MPH when I will NEVER be going 100MPH...etc, etc.
I have a GMC Envoy. It is a fantastic vehicle. Resale? I dont car, I dont plan on trading it in.
Alot of the arguments in this thread are smoke and mirrors. I dont know how an Element owner can even complain about the HHR...they are basically the same concept falling into the same niche.

Alot of the arguments in this thread are smoke and mirrors. I dont know how an Element owner can even complain about the HHR...they are basically the same concept falling into the same niche.you need to understand the owner's intent: anyone who tries to get 400whp is looking for very high speed and will push the car to get up to 100+ mph otherwise they'd never take a stock car and modify it to that extent
i also never knocked the HHR (kinda like it) - just put in the example of the unbelieveable deal my bro in law got on a used Venture - but for you who keeps a car 10+ years doesn't have to worry - but for 50% plus owners who sell in 4 or less years resale value plays a very important part of the decision...just imagine you have a family crisis and need to liquidate most you own including selling your cars - you would take a hit on resale value (but that is the risk / reward situation you chose)
lwclancers 10-14-2005, 09:22 PM ahhh, fair enough! good points jaje

Hondamade4dogs 11-05-2005, 06:46 PM Finally ! We picked up the HHR after waiting three weeks, :-o It is a White one, after waiting for it, We found out it isn't the one we wanted, So they said we could take it home for the weekend, until the one we ordered comes in. I almost blew up at the Dealership and told them to shove it up there A hole...So we have had it for about three hours now, and it is just OK, it is small feeling...They told us the seats came out of the back, but they don't, they just flip and fold down :x I guess that is the problem when you order one before you see it for real. So for now we are in the trying out mode for the weekend...... :-o
bobhch/hchbob 11-05-2005, 07:20 PM Hondamade4dogs...Did you really tell them this, "I almost blew up at the Dealership and told them to shove it up there A hole..." or almost? Does not sound like the HHR has the same love feeling that the Element gets here on the EOC. Did you get to test drive one before you agreed to this deal?
Hope that you either decide to like it or tell them to shove it up there A hole!
How do you really feel? Go with your gut feeling Hondamade4dogs....Doesn't sound like you love the HHR....maybee that will change.
I almost won the Lottery and scored with the wife last night. Almost!

lwclancers 11-07-2005, 12:00 PM I dont see a problem with the seats not coming out...looks to be ok since it forms a fold flat floor:

Hey if you keep it? When you put on the first add on on it. That will be the first step. I hope all works out for you and your dogs!:)
Liked that shortended version of the E you did on photoshop. You are getting good. I need to practice....Alot! Something I want to do but, never seem to take the time to practice. My future goal is to photoshop practice.
