Cool beat, rootyblue!

Be sure to invest in the Pioneer iPod adapter so you can charge your iPod and interface directly with your Pioneer DEH-P470MP deck! Plus, you've got the LX, so you can easily route the wires into the storage bin without any drilling or cutting (just loosen the screws that hold the bin from the back).

Now, don't forget your Apple sticker! :)

Well here's my two cents.
I own a second-gen iPod - one of the big ones (physically i mean). Its a 20gb player.
There are a few things that make the iPod worth the extra cash over some Wal-Mart wannabes.
For one, the interface is easier to set up, install, and use.
Second, the AAC coding used for the iPod is much much MUCH better than MP3 in terms of total sound quality. More on that in a second.
Thirdly, I highly doubt that a $100 MP3 player of that size has any remote chance of having a high quality amplifier built in. The amp in the iPod is not awesome by any stretch - that's why i have a separate headphone amplifier for home listening. However, in an environment like a car, having the cleanest possible signal routed to your stereo is KEY. Thusly, you aren't overdriving the input before it hits amplification. Any distortion played through any speaker even at low volumes will destroy the speaker. Period. If you have distortion already, then playing it louder will distort it even worse and, as stated, could end up frying your speakers. This is why, at my work, we have customers come in regularly that have fried the tweeters in their $700 B&W speakers using BS recievers.

The iRiver is a killer player, and i have heard that there are some others out there that are approaching iPod quality. I just want to put it out there that sometimes, paying more for a better item is simply justified. You can get an iPod mini for only a tad more than that player - and it is totally worth it.

BTW - that ipod install is killer. If I didn't have an EX, that's where I would put mine. I am going to end up routing a $100+ Analysis Plus iPod cable (natch - the best cable for it out there, got fer cheap I'm a dealer for AP) under the console and just keep it out of the way when I don't need it.

Sorry to go on a tear, but I believe everyone in the world would benefit from a little bit of better audio.

 I will get off the soapbox now!

That is a great player too. Definately, higher bitrates are cool - i don't have as much on my 'pod, but they're all 320bits! Whee!

I just bought the Ipod 20gig with color photo last week and love it. Went and bought the cable I needed at Radio Shack for 8 bucks and plugged it into my element and started enjoying my favoirte songs right away. I love that aux connection, every car should have that.

if you have an EX with the AUX input, it is really worth the $30 or so to get either a sik imp (www.sik.com) or a belkin adapter that plugs into the ipod dock port and charges. the signal into the audio system is *much, much* cleaner and it will sound great

you must not be into sound. because unless its docked using a line out running it through the headphone jack makes sounds like poop.

Also ipod owners with FM transmitters make me laugh as much as jaguar owners in mcdonalds drive thru

^^^

Well, I've not tried the AUX jack since I bought the LX model, but I agree that the direct dock connector produced superb sound! Oh, and MUCH agreed about the FM transmitters. Don't waste your money on these pieces of crap. I tried the Belkin, but the reception was terrible on every channel and the best quality was about AM grade. And since I live in a well populated area with a 1 hour commute, I had to keep changing the frequency all the time because normal air stations kept causing interference (this is really hard to do while driving since the frequency switches are located on the AC Power plug itself, and the outlet is located on the passenger side!).

One more... I thought it would be a great idea using the iPod mini dock so that I could simply pop the iPod in and out, but that also was a big flop. I had to reset my iPod every other time I used it. Fortunately I kept the receipt and took it back to the store.

As stated above, I now use the direct dock connection that comes with my Pioneer iPod interface (exactly like the USB cable that comes with the iPod). It is charged directly from this same cable. All wiring is neatly tucked away behind the dash, and my iPod sits comfortably (and discretely) in the little pocket where the EX model subwoofer is installed. And since I control the iPod directly from my Pioneer deck, I don't need to fiddle with the iPod or take my eyes off the road while driving. Just set it and forget it!

(oh, and if anyone is curious... I first had the Alpine deck and iPod interface, but the scroll bar kept pissing me off! And yep - I took it back also and got the Pioneer!)

Hopefully my 2 cents can save all fellow iPod owners $100.00+

unfortunately you bought an LX. the EX has an AUX in, but not the LX.

you will either have to change the stereo to one with an AUX in, or get one of those radio transmitter things. i hope that you bought the LX with the idea of upgrading the stereo?

Well, you still need a 1/8" male to male plug to go from the Sik imp to the AUX jack, but any Radio Shack will have it. The Sik is well worth it; vastly superior sound quality by taking advantage of line level output.

The male to male miniplug cable is indeed available at any electronics store. The Belkin car kit is the same - I have two of them and really like them.

Hi, I just joined the forum today, yesterday we bought our Element. :) Yesterday we took the E for a short drive and were very pleased with our decision to buy one. Today we are going to do a couple hundred km./mi. drive.

I am anxious to plug my iPod into the stereo, where do I purchase the cable that connects the iPod to the stereo system and is there a part number?

Thanks for any help.

I have a gripe about my iPod. Mine keep crashing! am I too hard on it? It's in a gel skin, a pack carrier when I'm walking to and from classes and it's in the square part of the cupholder when in my car. I've gone through four of them! I guess it's the 40gigs! Anyway, I'm getting a Rio next time....

E-858 - Do you use the dock by any chance? I tried the dock for my Mini, and it kept causing it to crash! Though pretty easy to reset the iPod, I took that POS dock back to the store for a full refund! Since then I've not had any problems whatsoever!

Oh, and just a reminder to folks who may be considering an iPod... don't buy that stupid "Shuffle" thing. I bought one for my sister and the battery leaked after like 3 days. I sure hope that the new iPod "Nano" isn't made with the same level of quality!

iPod (3rd and 4th Gen) and iPod Mini have an excellent reputation for quality, but I guess there are still a few bad "Apples" in the barrel! That's really too bad!

I saw the press release (http://stream.apple.akadns.net/) announcement on Apple's web site last night.

1,000 songs = 4 GB = $249.00
500 songs = 2 GB = $199.00

This thing is basically an iPod photo. Color screen, and half the thickness of the iPod mini. In fact, it will be the replacement for the iPod mini!

Looks very cool, and should be hitting the stores right about now! :)

They are $199 for 2G and $249 for 4G. They come in white or black, but they all come with "mug me" white headphones. I haven't heard of any out right "problems" yet, but they are only the second flash player to come out of Apple and "first" generation of this type for Apple. Sometimes it is good to sit back and wait before diving in head first, to see if anyone busts their skull open on any rocks under the water.

Only two things will keep Apple from getting its butt stomped right now in the flash market. First, I honestly believe at this point, that Steve Jobs could literally put a turd in box with a white front and stainless backing and sell them en masse, then repackage that same turd in a smaller container a year later and sell it again. Second, Apple went to Samsung, one of the biggest flash memory providers and struck an exclusive deal to get memory way cheaper than any other manufacturer.

Smart for Samsung, bad for everyone else, including us. The Koreans are the actual innovators in the flash DAP field and Samsung is a Korean company, but not the best DAP company. So, for them to get the most bang for their buck, they supply their memory in an almost "wal-mart-esque" business set-up and try to brow beat moms and pops out of the market.

Companies like iRiver and Cowon (I bet most people haven't even heard of Cowon.), have far superior DAPs on the drawing board, but since they don't have the cheap memory deal, can't quite bring it to market cheap enough for what an American consumer expects. Instead, I think there are plans to release one of them using an 8G microdrive instead of the flash originally planned. It'll probably be a bit more but, it also plays video, mp3, wma, ogg. Oh, and it'll probably be able to load using proprietary software, wmp, or use UMS.

Apple's iPods are okay, but they would be way better if they actually paid attention to their competitors. Original iPod idea, cool, click wheel, cool. I was pretty psyched about the Nano upon first seeing it, but after reading up, not so much. Oh, something else I read, the Nano name is already on a Creative Zen player, whoops.

Samsung is concerned with one thing, building products in the cheapest possible way. I have sold their TVs, which (IMO) look pretty bad and fall apart.

I jumped into the iPod thing very early, and have one of the old old ones that's the size of a pack of playing cards. I have never (knock on wood) had any issues with this one.

Love the quote abotu Steve Jobs and turds.

iPods are the industry standard. While Creative Labs and others have created similar products, none have the "cache" of the 'pod, simply because it is still the coolest looking and it has, again IMO, the best interface - plus, when I got mine, they were Mac only and they shouldve stayed that way, I enjoyed my sense of superiority. (chuckle). I think the Nano, if it works out well, will be theb est iPod for my fiancee.

09-13-2005, 11:07 AM
I still think $250 for 6G is pretty good. I have no need for flash color photo reproduction, or it's attendant battery killing. Give me a good interface, no color frills, and a size big enough not to get lost, but small enough to put in my pocket. I took my 60 cds out of the E because my mini holds all of them, with half left over for future uploads.

CDs=8 tracks of the 90s

I guess mine will just go to archival storage.

So I've had my Element for 5 days so far, and I'm all excited about attaching my iPod to it... does anyone know if you need two separate cables for the mini versus the shuffle? Or do you just need one and it'll go either way? I'd rather ask you guys than look like an idiot in front of the Best Buy kids.
