If I am correct although going from the OEM P215/70/16 tires to the P225/70/16 tires will throw off the speedometer by about 1.6 mph (no big deal), the larger tires will give you better gas milage.

Revolutions over a distance of 1 mile, a P215/70/16 will be 755 revolutions versus the P225/70/16 at 738 revolutions.

I would think you would see an increase in MPG and tread life.

No, you won't see better gas mileage because you have effectively changed the gearing by going to a tire with a larger rolling circumference. Theoretically, the car will have to work slightly harder to get up to cruising speed with the higher gearing, and that will negate any gas savings. Honestly, with such a small difference you won't really notice either way in real world driving... it might be detectable in a laboratory setting but not out on the road.

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
215/70-16 5.9in 13.9in 27.9in 87.5in 724 0.0%
225/70-16 6.2in 14.2in 28.4in 89.2in 710 2.0%

A 1.2 mile per hour difference

Overall just tad bit more beef.

Is this true about the speedometer? If so, how do you fix it?

Drive 3mph over the speed limit rather than 5.
