: Things to do in SD
E-Freak 08-18-2005, 12:24 PM Hey there,
The wife and I (and our 1 yr old son) will be in San Diego mid-September. Any suggestions on places to eat or things to do?
We'll be Elementless as we're flying in and I'll be Mr. Mom for the week. Our hotel is in the Gas Lamp area and we will have a rental vehicle.
Any advice would be appreciated.
paulj 08-18-2005, 01:09 PM Balboa Park and the zoo comes immediately to mind.
05BlackOnBlack 08-18-2005, 01:52 PM Balboa park for sure. You can spend a whole day there checking out all the museums, Balboa Park (http://www.balboapark.org/) Other than that the Wild Animal park has some really cool new exibits there. You can also go whale watching depending on the time of year, you should be able to find that stuff online too. They have some cool harbor cruises, shopping, etc. Have fun!
The5thELEMENT 08-18-2005, 03:11 PM I forget the address, but for the best carne asada burritto north of Mexico...you have to go to Taco Fiesta. $2 something for a monster burritto that is out of this world. We used to drive from north L.A. for them!
joemama 08-18-2005, 04:09 PM Oh I thought this was a thread for what to do in South Dakota... I would have told you drinking. That's all there is to do in South Dakota. Its Northern cousin North Dakota; (yes North and South, they get real creative in the plain states) North Dakota has the highest per capita rate of Alcoholism, suicide and teen pregnancy. Yep there isn't much to do in either Dakota. Thank your lucky stars you are going to San Diego SD and not the Mount Rushmore SD.
Ranger 08-18-2005, 06:33 PM There is a ton of stuff to do.
If you're a baseball fan, Petco Park is very nice.
You'll be close to Seaport Village. They have tons of shops, restaurants, and live music.
Just north of there at the harbor, you can tour the USS Midway, The Star of India, a Russian Submarine, and the ship used in the movie Master and Commander.
All of this is almost walking distance from the Gaslamp.
There is also a huge mall called Horton Plaza in the Gaslamp.
The Zoo and Balboa Park are right next to each other and only a few minute drive from downtown.
You may want to consider hitting Disneyland as well.
It's less than an hour and a half north on the I-5. (Give or take)
Be sure to stop in and have lunch at Anthony's Seafood. (The sit down restaurant, not the walk up one next door)
It's about 50 yards south of the Star of India.
Crab and cheddar melt on sourdough...mmmmmmmmm.
Oh yeah, Donovan's Steak House is across the street too.
I'm hungry all of a sudden.
:-D
E-Freak 08-18-2005, 10:54 PM Thanks for all of the awesome suggestions. Taco Fiesta, Anthony's Seafood and Donovon's Steakhouse will be right at the top of our list. Balboa Park sounds really nice too. It's always great to get the info straight from the locals.
joeBoxer 08-29-2005, 01:49 AM Amazing that no one has mentioned SEA WORLD! how about a bike ride along mission bay and around fiesta island in mission bay park? you can rent bikes at the Hilton resort that's right next to the park.
If you like Greek food you HAVE to go to Cafe Athena in Pacific Beach. Two yums up!!
Ranger 08-30-2005, 01:08 PM Oh yeah, I forgot about Sea World.
That's a good one too.
wankerklink 08-30-2005, 02:59 PM If you've never been on a military base you could visit MCRD for about I hr.
MCRD= Marine Corps Recruit Depot, aka Boot Camp.
mixteca 09-01-2005, 05:12 PM You will really like San Diego, especially if you want to go to the beach. My suggestions are to go to Pacific Beach and watch the surfer girls from the cliff North of Crystal Pier. Also you must go to La Jolla an up scale community North of Pacific Beach, take Mission all the way and look for the tide pools and La Jolla Cave. By the way La Jolla is "precious gem" or "piece of jewelry" in Spanish but I think somebody screwed up when they spelled it. It should have been spelled "La Joya" but I think they thought it looked better. Also they my of gotten confused because in Spanish two LLs together is pronounced like a "Y", (la hoya).
E-Freak 09-02-2005, 12:33 PM Thanks again for all the advice. It's been about 15 years since I've been out that way so I remember some of the places and names but have no idea what's new. We'll be down from the 15th till the 22nd of September.
joeBoxer 09-02-2005, 02:04 PM will you be driving down? it would be cool to see your ride on the streets here and your tires especially. ;)
E-Freak 09-02-2005, 05:52 PM Sorry joeboxer,
we're flying down. If I had the time I'd take the Element but I'm just too freakin' busy posting on the EOC
fishlee 09-03-2005, 05:18 PM How about lego land, it's in carlsbad 30-45 mins. north
on I-5. or take the San Diego trolly to the mission. http://www.missionsandiego.com/location.htm
what about belmont park, it has the coolest old roller coaster.http://www.giantdipper.com/

RealWheels 09-06-2005, 03:58 PM Last Sunday I went to Dockweiler around LAX. There were many people, but it was not crowded. It would be a great place to watch the sunset. I am looking to see more sites in CA. I lived in the LA area for ten years, but never really took local trips. I just returned after 15 months in GA. With starting a new fabulous job and a new career, I can take time to enjoy this beautiful state. Maybe RealWheels finally not be an all work and no play type of gal. To you California people, If you are a single lady, where are some neat places to go and still feel safe.
HeCam17 09-11-2005, 08:25 PM The Element Owners Meet Up is a safe place.
E-Freak 09-11-2005, 08:36 PM Seeing all of you at the Meet would be cool but we're flying back on the 22nd. Maybe I'll check out the area so I know what you're talking about when you post about the Meet.
Any good places to pick up some toys for my Element while I'm down there?
E-Freak 09-16-2005, 06:46 PM Well we made it here and had a great road trip today to La Jolla. The surf was up (10-15' waves) and it looked like the surfers were having a blast. Lots of lookie-loos made me think it must have been an exceptional day for surfing.
We headed as far North as Torrey Pines and had some great cheeseburgers at the gliderport. Beautiful weather and fantastic scenery.
Saw 4 Elements today too. No EOC decals though.
Mesach 09-19-2005, 01:14 AM My G/F and I just went down and took the E, Saw a Padres game, and the next day went to Mission Bay, drove out on the island, backed the E up to the water, dropped the tailgate, and sat down and stuck my toes in the water.
It was awesome.
mixteca 09-19-2005, 04:22 PM I'm glad you guys are having a good time, hope you get to Sea World, S.D. Wild Animal Park, S.D. Aerospace Museum and S.D. Automotive museum. :)
