Does anyone know how to decode an "E"lement VIN? I am curious to know what my newly minted VIN can tell me about my soon to arrive "E". All I know so far is that it is the 653rd Candian "E".

isky - heres the breakdown from the repair manual:
example - 5J6 YH1 7 2 * 3 L 000001
5j6 = Honda motor corp

YH1 = element 2wd/K24A4
YH2 = element 4wd/K24A4

7 = 5 door/5 spd manual
8 = 5 door/4 spd automatic

2 = DX
5 = EX with ABS
6 = EX with side airbags and ABS

* = Check digit

3 = Model year (2003)

L = factory code (East Liberty Ohio)

000001 = Serial number (U.S.)
800001 = Serial number (Canada)

Yes, Mac, a VIN ending in 800166 means you were the 166th "E" made for Canada. And that is the earliest Canadian VIN I have heard of yet.

I would be curious to know the date when everyones' E was purchased in relation to their VIN sequence number. For instance, I went to the dealership on 4/5 and put a deposit on my E, which I then picked up on 4/19 (it was my EEEEaster EEEEgg gift from the EEEEaster bunny). My vin number ends with 8726. I've noticed people are relaying VINs in the 20,000 range now. Does that mean that approx. 12,000 E's have been sold in roughly a month? Is this the shortage = hype formula for success? Not that I mind, but I am wondering...

I bought my E on March 31st right off the truck from that weeks shipment (I didn't order it) and my E is # 14,236 produced fro the US Market

The VIN numbers are sequential only within 2WD and 4WD. The 4WD's are in the 20,000 range now and the 2WD's just passed 10,000 in May. Also, your E may have taken a very convoluted route on it's way to the dealer--the build date determines the VIN and shipping times can vary quite a bit. It also could have been on the lot for a while.

My E had a build date of 4/23-27, and I picked it up on 4/30, and my VIN is 23283, so I assume that means that the 4WD VINs for cars being built this month are in the mid-20,000s.
