All I could find right away from that link was pictures of the Coupe. It looks derivative of the old TSX and old Accord Coupe. Doesn't turn my crank at all (sorry... different tastes, I guess).

But it's also too big. I mean, this "Civic" is as big or bigger than both of my old ('80's) Accords. That's what's killing Civic sales. You're paying mid-size $$$ for a slightly smaller mid-size when a "real" mid-size like the Accord is but a few bucks more.

In the face of $3.50-4.00/gal, the City is where it's going to be for Honda. I predict that the new Civic will continue the downward trend for the model.

Thanks for that "official" link, lwc!

(I think. Now that I see all versions, I like it even less. This is recalling the "jellybean" designs of the 90's. But I guess I'll have to reserve final assessment until seeing one in person. But they still have moved further away from the Civic's "econobox" roots and have nothing but another - but ever-so-slightly smaller - Accord. What are they thinking?)

From looking at all the pictures of the coupe, sedan and hybrid on my first link, this civic is goin to be best one yet, definitley will NOT continue the downfall, IMO. This civic will slay the mazda3's. Also Honda's reasoning for the civic being more mid-size is that the new Fit(jazz, city) is goin to fill the econobox spot in Honda's lineup.

I really think Honda has won on this one.

I have to agree with you Mike - my vote is a big fat blaaah for the styling.

I have never been much of a fan of Honda's styling -with a few exceptions (the current S2000 and, of course, the Element!). It's a very conservative company in this department. You think they might have taken a bit more of a risk with the Civic - aside from the cost issues some more pizazz would help them in the youth sector where they are losing market share.

No, it's purely cost issues. The Civic hasn't been (the current equivalent of) a $12,000 econobox for a couple of decades. I remember sticker shock at a lowly Civic hatchback in around '88 - it was probably 10-20% over what an equivalent Escort or 323 would have been.

The young-buyer market is price-driven, and Honda is constantly missing that key point. Debatably-sexy redesign or not, the best they're going to manage is drool stains on the showroom windows - the kids just can't afford $18K out the door, plain and simple.

On the planet where the same model (Civic) 20 years ago got 35-40mpg and was considered an "economy" car. If the Civic stayed with the small footprint but used current engine technology (conventional, not hybrid), we'd be looking at 40-45mpg, not 30.

This new and the previous generations of Civics are bigger, fatter, more expensive... and have lost sight of what made Honda in the first place. Until the City is available they honestly have not much in the way of low-end models for young buyers or the budget-minded.

I bet the 07 E will also have more of a "bubbled" look to it.

Got it. Thanks.

And, you know, Honda hasn't figured-out that the quickest way to get people to bail from your website is to have "surprise audio". Nothing screams "I'm not working!" when surfing at the office like a site with sound.

honda keeps making it harder and harder to put in an aftermarket stereo without making it look like you just glued one to your dash. this one looks impossible (with the integration of the duct in the face plate - ouch!).

the good news is, looks like the civic will be eligible for the "premium sound" that i have in my element, which i have to say is pretty nice.

and the navigation option is pretty sweet.

So, then, you're saying that Honda is correct for exclusively seeking mid-market buyers, and building two sedan models that overlap in the same niche. The new Civic is nothing more than a very-slightly-smaller Accord. That's fine, but it has been inferred here that the redesign is to appeal to the young buyer. But the young buyer can't afford the new Civic, just like targeted 20-year-old college guys couldn't afford the E.

If, as you say, it's OK for Honda to cede the entry market to the Koreans, then that's pretty short-sighted on both your parts. Even stodgy old Toyota got the message and created a whole division because they were seriously losing low-end market share and therefore losing the upgrade loyalty it creates.

Maybe this is too complex to be Marketing 101, but Honda is seriously missing the boat on the young buyer/entry market by deluding themselves into thinking that $18-20K is not a problem in this niche. It is.

Actually Mike they arent. All the middle aged people will be trading in their used Civics to buy the new ones since they can afford it.

Then all the younger people can buy the used ones cause they can afford those.

Just go to CarMax and look at what the largest inventory is...used Civics and Accords. There are plenty out there at good prices for younger people to buy.

Based on sales, I dont think Honda is really missing anything. But thats just my opinion based on absolutely no numbers ;-)
