: XM Radio Prices

I've read a couple of times now about people wheeling and dealing with XM to lower the monthly subscription cost. I drive 40 miles every day in my Element, most of it in bumper-to-bumper traffic, and will die without my XM, but at the same time I have very little cash to spare.

Does anyone have any tips for a rather non-confrontational person to whittle the monthly price down a bit, assuming it's even doable?

the letter I got from them shows the longer subsciption is the more you save but the longer your subscription the larger the amount it will be 12 months you save$12.95 but you pay $142.45 2years you save$38.85 but pay$271.95 3years you save $106.56 but pay $359.64 I prefer the $38.85 for three months

Today at work, I got a call from Jennifer at XM. I had let the freebie expire (purchased Ele in May). 6.99 a month was her offer, which I accepted ----

Have her number? That sounds like a killer deal! Did you have to haggle with her?

Hi,
Jennifer of XM called me at work...I had ignored XM's earlier mailers/notices that my trial period was about to expire. Because I don't drive but on weekends, (bike to Metrorail during week) I couldn't see paying the $14.99 monthly fee. (I had taken a 1,200 mile trip earlier in July & really did dig the XM variety) So when Jen of XM called, IDed herself and OFFERED me the $6.99 deal right off the bat, (included waiving the reconnect fee as the trail had expired), I could only say YES.

Just relate / leverage my story to XM if you are so inclined, regardless of your trial period expiration or not. I believe you can pay what I pay - they've done the financial analysis - they obviously know they can make a profit w/ your $14.99 per month income stream so I mean, the hardware network is in place, the costs are relatively fixed, so the difference between $0 from you for the foreseeable future vs. a steady monthy $6.99 a month is a no brainer for them. Just tell'em Marrak sent ya!

 My XM freebie period runs out the end of this month. I renewed a couple of days ago at $38.85 for 3 months. I just got off the phone with XM. I asked why some people are getting renewals at $6.99/mo instead of $12.99/mo. They said the $6.99/mo is a "promo" and only good for one 3-month renewal. All you have to do is call and ask for it. They changed my renewal price to $20.97 instead of $38.85! :)

Call them at 1-800-443-6454. (btw, the online renewal isn't working--the charges aren't going through, so they said they are advising people not to renew online until they get it fixed.)

My trial period ran out Saturday and I tried calling XM. They said you have to be called first with the "promo" offer. They would not give it to me so I said I'd wait. I like XM, but I'll still wait.

If i have another XM radio, do I need to pay for two accounts, or can I use one account for both the car radio and my home XM radio?

You'd need two accounts. A cheaper solution, if you have a portable unit, would be to plug it into you AUX port in the E - that way you'd only pay for one radio. Downside is you'd have to select stations on your unit. I think XM does discount for multiple receivers, though.

Not true. It can be on one account, but they charge a reduced rate for the "second" receiver. I believe the second receiver is only like $4.99 a month.

You are right, this is really what I meant - sorry for any confusion. Each receiver has its own unique id to communicate with the satellite.

I just got the call to renew my XM for the 3 mo promo at $6.99/mo. I told the CSR to extend that to 12 months at that price and she's got a deal. Unfortunately, she says that the best she can do is 3 mo at $6.99 and $12.99/mo after that. I asked about $77/yr deal that I keep hearing about. She played dumb. So I responded that since I didn't miss having their product that much, that I also wouldn't miss paying $6.99/mo for it.

Gotta love my iPod.

So today, I got another call from "Julie" offering the 1 yr for $77 deal. I took it. I had to wait for 2 months after the trial period expired before they finally came around... Be patient and $6.41/month can be yours!

For anyone wondering if XM is worth it.. IT IS! The funny thing is I used to tell people "I'm not in the car enough to use it." Wrong. I drive about 5 miles to work and a little more if I "take the long way home" after work. It is worth it just to have no commercials, weather channel (for every major city), PGA Tour network and like 20 rock stations. Not to mention that you get it free on your computer for being a customer. Thats right, at your pc (which i have plugged into my home stereo so I can relax and never hear a commercial while I'm chilling at home. I bought my wife a receiver for her car and her subscription was $6.99/month with no haggling. If I hadn't have bought an '05 that had XM in it already, I would've never been interested in getting it. One more reason I love my Ele.
