: Panels DuPont
yamone 10-02-2005, 09:38 PM Well today i went out to find something that might work on the panels and found Teflon Protectant by DuPont and it seems to work well. Took all of the streaks off of the panels. But time will only tell. Has anyone used this product on the panels befor and how has it lasted.

Tim Vance 10-02-2005, 09:44 PM I think I'm gonna book mark this page. Let us know how it goes....
yamone 10-02-2005, 09:50 PM Will do I have the detailer coming later this week to wash and wax the car he hates the panels because they always look like Sh+% when he is done. He wont do E's any more due to ours. Sort of funny if you think.

yamone 10-06-2005, 08:23 PM OK OK it has now been three days with this stuff on the panels of the E and no streaking of any sort. We get HEAVY DEW each morning it is almost like a light rain with the amount of water on the car. By the way it is a Fog from the Pacific Ocean, seems to be working just fine and with out any dust sticking to it also. The DuPont stuff has teflon in it to help repell the dust. I had to apply it twice on the rear panel du to it not being dry by the time the fog rolled in.

yamone 10-31-2005, 10:29 PM Ok now it has been about 1 month and havent had any streaking so far. Washed the e two times and have no streaks. I have put it on 2 times and the second time wow what a difference. It gets washed in a couple of days and I will take pics and post so that you all can see what it looks like.

Let me preface this with the disclaimer "I'm the last one to be considered an environmentalist".
I threw out any cooking pans coated with teflon. They have found unacceptably high levels of teflon leaching into the food from cooking with teflon pans. They have further found very high levels of teflon compunds in the soil and water near production facilities producing teflon. Knowing this info and the red flags being raised about the actual toxicity of teflon, I'm avoiding it all together. Spraying it on your panels probably won't kill you. But after finding out what teflon can do, I'm avoiding it completely.
JasonS 11-01-2005, 10:42 AM It would be different if you were eating off of your panels...
But to protect your car, there are lots of chemicals out there and teflon is just one of them.
It would be different if you were eating off of your panels...
Maybe your right, maybe your not.
Spreading something via Aerosol, is an excellent way to make a compund easier to absorb. Biological weapons are delivered via aerosol. Some are so potent, one tiny droplet anywhere on your skin and your worm food. While one drop of teflon has never killed anyone yet, they are finding abnormally high levels of teflon in many adults they tested.
No one is sure of the long term side effects of these abnormally high amounts, but early data is not positive.
And if for those who think i'm crazy, please feel free to cook on very high temperatures with your teflon pans (the older, the better), 10 more pioints if you live anywhere near Dupont teflon manufacturing facility.

Your absolutely right...you made me laugh as well.
However,
There are tons and tons of other pollutants and cancer causing things that we all touch and breath in every day. I see your point that if you can avoid something that's one less thing to die from. But I really don't care anymore, 1 in 4 people smoke and they don't give a **** about my lungs, that's far worse than me deciding to kill myself with my teflon plastic panel protectant. I don't know, to me....with all the junk food, cigarette smoke, exhaust fumes, fast food, bleach, oils and lubes, and ect... that make my life shorter, who cares about plastic protectant?
I mean geez....mouth wash and deoderant cause cancer :-o
mizsydney 11-02-2005, 03:10 PM I know better than to overheat teflon pans, because that DOES cause toxic fumes, but using teflon on the panels doesn't seem unreasonable. aren't they still using teflon to make people parts, e.g. replacement hip joints etc?
I would rather find one thing that really works, than keep buying different things to see if they really work. it seems better for the environment to buy and spray one package of teflon-containing protectant, than to keep buying 303, armorall, vinyl treatment, back to black, whatever, and spraying those on the panels, all the different chemicals and all the packaging and either storing unused product or throwing it away. and how do you properly dispose of 303, for example? can you pour it down the drain? can you pour it on the ground? does it have to be taken to the hazardous waste dump? if I store the unused bottles, they may degrade and leak, mixing the different chemicals together. how hazardous will that be?
I guess you can argue the environmental hazards of just about anything.
by the way, can you cite that study on leaching teflon? all I could find on the internet were some articles by "holistic reverends", nothing from any reliable medical sites ....
PhyrePhoxe 11-02-2005, 03:42 PM I hope you don't have any Gore-tex then or any other "breathable" type fabrics. They are all made out of PTFE which is....you guessed it Teflon....

MikeyG 11-03-2005, 10:36 AM HIJACK WARNING
NAT, What are your thoughts on the Goodyear Forteras? How many miles to you have on them? Did you go stock size? I tried to PM you but you have the ability disabled.
Thanks,
MikeyG

Mikey:
I'm liking the Fortera's more and more. They took some adjustment as they feel very different from the oem Goodyears. They are the most stable tire I've ever felt. They glide over road bumps and all road irregularities. It's a very smooth comfortable ride. They have significantly reduced the ride harshness while significantly improving cornering limits. The tire performs virtually identical on dry and wet roads. Only difference is the wet limits are less then the dry limits. This is going to sound crazy but the Fortera's have better performance in the rain then the oem Goodyears had on dry road. They work well off road as well. I've done a few local single/double track shortcuts.

I only have about 1000 miles on them. Yes I went with the stock size.

OK back to the subject please..
Lets see some photo's when you can post them "YAMONE"
Sounds like you may have come up with a good protectorant.
I live in Fl. and we have dew a lot and would like to keep panels
looking great on my soon tobe Element...
Waiting on the 2006 and will probably get the unpainted panel version.
Thanks
Ron D
yamone 11-09-2005, 03:35 PM here are some pics of the panels after now 5 weeks and no new applications since then. It has been thru 3 rain storms and 20 days of heavy fog and or dew. it seems to be working fine for me but as you have all been reading some dont like the idea of teflon.
If you look at the first pic there are some streaking but that is from a dirty car and the water running off onto the panel. as for the sides you can see that there are no streaks. Seems to be the best thing so far that i have found. Oh and the detailer that i use has also washed the car 2 times since and loves the way the panels look. he hasnt touched them at all.
if you look at the pics real close you can see the water in the driveway and on the E

Ron D 11-09-2005, 03:42 PM Thanks "Yamone"
It looks great...
I will give it a try when I get my Element...

aaydemi 12-07-2005, 01:55 PM I just bought some of this stuff and applied it to the right side panels only. The label says it repels dirt/dust, so we'll see how well it holds up against the nasty road conditions here in a midwest winter. I'll do a little comparison in about a week or so.

Sounds great mine is still holding up it has been on there for a couple on months now and I need to reapply to the front of the car and the rear bumper where the water runs off of the back.
