: air bags and dog crates

I am planning on putting the dog's crate 1) between the front and back seats 2) along the side of the Element, replacing one seat. The crate is 30"L X 21"W X 26"H. My prefered method is #1, however, I am likely to end up using option #2. My concern for #2 is the side impact air bags deploying and hitting the crate. Will that happen? If so, can the side bag be deactivated by a switch? I don't want my dog killed by the air bag.

if you get hit in the side, the crate will probably get crushed.

Don't the side air bags deploy forward, to protect the front seat passenger/driver? The bag is located on the side of the front seat's back.

Side airbags are located in the outside bolsters of the front seats, and the deployment zone faces forward and to the sides to protect the front seat occupants only. There is no airbag deployment behind the front seats.

You are confusing the "side airbags" in the E with "side curtain airbags" that are available in other vehicles and typically deploy from above the windows. These would not be a problem with the crate, anyway, because the crate would be at the farthest reaches of the deployment zone if not out of the zone. The crate would be stronger than the remaining airbag energy.

Just go with the custom order dog crates, and place them in the back

Hondamade4dogs - where did you get the custom crates? I was going to use the standard Midwest wire crate - the narrow model - for the back seat of the E. Your crates look much stronger.

http://kustomkrates.com Those are not mine crates, it is a vendors car.
We have plastic crates that we use. But have been thinking of getting a set of these...with Flames..

OK, I posted a thread with the gory details of the E-DogMobile in the DIY section. Might be of interest to the dog folks on this forum
