Less than a week since the First Fall Foliage Excursion, and there's already a buzz about a winter meet. Skiing? Shopping? Winter Olympics? Whatever it is, I'd vote for after the holidays. More of a chance for snow and less on the "to-do" list by then. On the other hand, as my wife pointed out...Christmas and shopping do go together.

Start posting your ideas on this thread and let's see what develops.

After the holidays would probably work out better for me.

I can't ski or snowboard anymore - bad knees. But hanging out in front of the fire at a lodge with a nice warm drink would be nice. If we go the ski lodge route, maybe we can find a place that has tubing. That's about my speed now ;-)

As far as throwing ideas out there, I have one: From January 21st to 29th at the Bayside Expo Center (our big convention site in Boston) is the New England Camping & RV show. There are a lot of campers & rv's, but camping accessories are also shown & sold. The website for the show is: http://naexpo.com/camping/index.htm .

Since the Expo Center is right around the corner from the TV station I work at, I would happily volunteer to do a station tour if anyone was interested. There is plenty of parking in our lot for all the E's to park side by side.

As far as food goes: Well, you would be in Boston so there are tons of possilbilites. We could even have a picnic at Castle Island if we have a January thaw.

Just an alternative idea. I don't know if enough folks in our group are into the camping thing. But it is something different than skiing or shopping.

Ski trip would be great... I just can't ski this winter. :( I should be able to ice skate, so I would be up for that as well. Now sure how much time I will have before the holidays, but after would be good.

I would be up for some ice skating. Maybe depending on the spot, we could get a pickup game going.

Bald Eagle:Thanks for starting this new thread! :)

The "Fall Thread" and meet, were so much fun that I hope we can keep the New England EOC still going strong on this one!

I think a winter meet will be a lot of fun, however the planning may be more challenging. The Spring, Summer and Fall meets have all been outdoor events that have been free, and not involved buying lift tickets, making reservations, putting down deposits or finding a decent restaurant that will let a large group order off of the menu and maybe want separate checks! :-o I'll have to check out "the other site" to see how they did things, or maybe see if we can crash their Winter Olympics!

Thanks everyone for starting the idea train rolling. I also vote for after the holidays. Interesting idea about the camping expo ElementGrrl, I may look into that regardless of where our meet ends up! :) I'm trying to think of a place where we can park together, have some outdoor fun, and then go inside to warm up, eat drink and be merry, preferably by a fireplace. Anyone know of a place that offers sleigh rides? Time now for all of us to "think outside of the box"! Please don't hesitate to share any idea's that may pop into your head, even if you don't think they will fly...they ARE worth discussing! Let's see: Bayside Expo, Winter Olympics, Jimminy Peak, other ski lodges, sleigh rides, skating rinks, campgrounds, or maybe just a good old place with parking to go sledding or "coastering"?!

Hey Guys,

I'm in for the winter meet - after January is best. Way too busy before the holidays. Vinnie won't find any more skunks I'm sure. Well, never sure but hopeful.

I don't ski but I'll sit by the fire and watch. I do skate and tube, I think the statement made about doing something outdoors and then going inside to warm up is good. Warming up with a shot is always nice on a cold day.

I would have a difficult time driving in the city as I live so rurally. But I guess I could brave it. :|

Bald Eagle - thanks for the new thread.
Uncle Mike - this gives us more time for hot sauce preparation.

Count me in for whatever we come up with. It would be nice to find a venue that gives everyone a chance to do their thing. Skating, skiing, shopping or just chillin. Fortunately, I fit in all of the above.

I'll start looking for a fun destination for Jan/Feb.

You are so right.....I'm in training jurneez, and now include habenero peppers on the weekly produce list! One of us is gonna meet their match! :-o
p.s.....I'll be in Texas, close to the Mexican border, the first weekend in January and might have to do a little hot sauce shopping. Gee, I wonder if they have any really HOT, hot sauce in that part of the country?

If there is to be a ski-related meet (and I'm not pushing hard for it; I'll be skiing this winter regardless), I have another suggestion: Manchester, Vt. Close to Stratton and Bromley resorts, pretty accessible (by Vermont standards), and plenty of shopping opportunities for non-skiers. Unfortunately any ski resort will be crowded on weekends and holidays, so Friday is probably best.

I almost just started a separate "skiing thread" until I came across your post. Manchester is very nice, as is Bromley and Stratton! Lets see how many other skier's there are and consider whether it's feasible to incorporate skiing into our winter meet, or whether we should make that a separate outing for skiiers only. IMHO unless we have a lodge or chalet rented to use as a central "headquarters" or place to meet up at, it will be difficult connecting with people all doing their own thing.

Count me in for skiing, BUT I'll pass on the black diamond trails! You are right about weekends being crowded. Not to hijack this thread but does anyone else besides me have Monday's off to go skiing?

Happy New Year Everyone!:D

I hope you all had great holiday's and are looking forward to another fun year on this site with your Element. As I look back on 2005, I find it incredible that I never even HEARD of an Element before I began car shopping in February, but bought one anyway, have been to three New England meets, have met some GREAT people from these boards and have really enjoyed ElementOwners.com!:)

What I have observed from the previous meets IMHO, is that the best part is MEETING, talking and hanging out with fellow owners as opposed to any "activity" that is included. A fun place to go or activity, certainly adds to the excitement but having a place to line up our rides so we can visit, talk, oogle over each others mods, enjoy a box lunch and have access to rest room facilities is really the most important. A winter meet will also require a place to go inside to get warm.

So......I've got my thinking cap on for a place we can do all of the above with the added wish of a fireplace. Does anyone know of a hunting lodge, or warming lodge used by ice skaters, cross country skier's, ice fishermen, etc. that we could use? Anyone involved in scouting that know of a scouting lodge we could use? Maybe a smaller, less crowed, family oriented ski mountain, where we could just use the parking lot and then go inside?

L.L. Bean is certainly a fun idea but when was the last time anyone went shopping with 25 people? I'm lucky if I can shop two minutes without losing track of where my wife is! A place like this is a good activitiy for before or after the meet (just like Yankee Candle), but we need a place to hang out first, eat, drink, be merry!

Any ideas?

Hey guys! Well I am getting antsy for a meet. The only problem is you are all in NE and I'm not too familiar with NE. Anyone up for a possible meet in VT? I'm sure we could find everything we're looking for there. Even if we just meet for a lunch and some shopping that would be cool.

Hello Carly!

Thanks for reviving this slow moving "winter thread"! I gotta tell you I've been so busy from December right through to this weekend that I havn't been too motivated either.

BUT,.......I'm getting there! It has been such a fun year with the "New England & New York Group" that it would be great to have a winter meet, thus completing all four seasons!:D The winter will fly by from this point on as well as dates on the calendar so I am hoping we can put our heads togehter and come up with a location, date and time that works for everyone.

The winter meet will have to be on a Sunday for Denise and I to make it and I think we are free most if not all Sundays in February or March. Vermont is fine with us! All ideas listed thus far have been good ones. As long as we have a designated place to "meet", we can do anything we want after: sightsee, shop, eat, ski, etc.

Any ideas?

Introduction: Okay, I'll run something up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes. Seems to me that if we're going to get any real winter turnout, we'll need a variety of activities...skiing, sightseeing, shopping. It's not like we can just hang out in twenty degree weather admiring each others Elements. Okay, maybe for fifteen minutes or so, but then what?

Research: I have a book on America's Charming Small Towns & Villages, and Manchester/Dorset VT is listed. It's just inside the NY border, northeast of Albany. It seems to be a good venue for shopping and sightseeing, has the American Museum of Flyfishing, Manchester Designer Outlets, is near the Bromley and Stratton ski areas and not too far from the Vermont Country Store. It may attract some Vermont/New Hampshire EOC members who haven't joined our previous meets, but will be more of a journey for those in the Eastern Massachusetts/Rhode Island area.

Suggestion: We find a common meeting point in the area (probably a restaurant?) for a Sunday gathering, split up in to smaller groups to pursue our specific interests, meet again at the end of the day for dinner and share lies about our adventures, show off purchases, compare sprains/strains, and talk about how well our Elements handled in the snow. Some folks may want to come up on Saturday for an overnighter, others may just do a Sunday day trip. Depends on how far you're coming from.

Date: Sunday, February 19. That's President's Day weekend. Some people may have Monday off. Gives us about a month to get the word out and come to an agreement.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about this area. Never been there.

Inquiry: Anybody been there? Favorite hangouts? Good idea? Bad Idea?
Alternate location? Alternate date? Comments and suggestions? As Uncle Mike says, "Let's get this party going!" (or something like that).

Don't mean to be a wet blanket, but President's Day weekend (and the following week) is a terrible time to ski. Huge crowds, highest lift ticket prices.

[edit]"highest prices"=no discounts apply. Mostly, though, it will be crowded. Just food for thought.

There is no such thing as a cheap lift ticket!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you guys want shopping and sking I recommend North Conway N.H. Great shopping, and you are right next to 4 or 5 ski resorts.

Uncle MIke

Great suggestions Bald Eagle!

I have skiied Stratton & Bromley and know there are restaurants, pubs and things to do, but it's been a while. Skiing is the same price at Stratton on Holiday's and weekends: $72.00 full day or $54.00 for half day (after 12:00 pm). Bromley is a whopping two dollars more on holidays and lift tickets are
$61.00 for a full day and $46.00 for a half day.

I like the idea of having this on a long weekend since it can be tough going back to work early Monday morning after a busy weekend. Bromley is a much lower key mountain, cheaper and less crowded but will lack the "glitz" and the shops that Statton offers. It dosn't matter to me either way, but Bromely is probably less the better choice for anyone who hasn't skiied in a while (like me), and wants to get a little change back from their fifty dollar bill.

I'd be curious to know how many EOC folks would even be interested skiing?
Good point you make Bald Eagle about needing things to do other than standing around outside in below freezing temperatures! The nice thing about a ski lodge is that maybe the non-skiiers can get away with parking their E's in the lot, and use the lodge to meet, warm up, hang out, eat, etc. I suppose it depends on how many people are going and how crowded the lodge is. (Seating for 25 together on a crowded weekend could be difficult, but not impossible if some split up)

We are free that weekend, as well as others. Hope to see some more EOC folks on this thread!:D

Hey Dan, you are just west of there. What else do you know about the area? Our schedule is pretty open through March 5 and as non-skiers, holiday congestion on the slopes wasn't even on my radar.

Here are a couple of meet/activity ideas that look like a lot of fun!

Idea #1:
A Sleigh Ride for up to 45 people at the Adams Family Farm. They have three sleighs that hold up to 15 people each. The hour and one-half sleigh ride includes a stop at a log cabin with a fireplace, hot cocoa and a player piano!,

http://www.adamsfamilyfarm.com/rates-winter.html

Idea #2
Tubing at Mount Snow,

http://www.mountsnow.com/tubing.html

Both of these places are in Wilmington, VT and Mount Snow is a great place to ski also! The farm looks like it would be a cool place to hold our meet and appears very family friendly as well.

Dan nailed it ! That will be a busy weekend in that area. I'm up for it. Would not be my first choice, I;ll make it work.

I have done a Fiero car club meet in that area 2 years back. We ended up in burlington Vt. They had several restaurants that would rent us a function hall . We chose one that was 250$ for 5 hours. we had 33 people so that came to 7.50 $ per person, with a bar. That was not too bad. We were able to order anything on the menu as well.

You may want to look into something like that, for us in whatever area you chose. It gives you a place to go in advance, With room for everyone. It may not be an option on the weekend that you are looking at. I used the web to look at hotels. Diners. Bar's and restaurant before hand. Then did lots of the arangements By E-Mail. We had lunch waiting at a local pub. We all went in and ordered our lunch by E-Mail the week before. Lunch hit the table just 12 min. after we walked through the door. They did name cards on the food, so everyone got what they wanted.

I'm really up for anything as long as there is E's and all my E friends!

Now that's the spirit!:)

I called the number on the Adams Farm website and had a nice chat with the cheerful sounding woman who answered. Adult weekend prices are the same as midweek: $18.00 and advance ressies are required so that a sleigh or sleigh's can be reserved for us.

The sleigh ride is approximately thirty minutes each way with a thirty minute stop at the log cabin to warm up by the fire! What I like about this is that it is a group activity everyone can do together. No experience, bravado or athletic skills are required as in skiing, skating, tubing, etc.....which will exclude some people.

I have to admit though tubing (I've never done it), or skiing (I'm your basic "intermediate yahoo"), sound like a lot of fun too!!

Nice to see some repsonses. I think we should agree on a date pretty soon so we can make an official announcement, save the date on our calendars and start promoting the meet. We are open just about any weekend, and either tubing or sleighing sound good to me (don't know about Denise).

We would probably get more of a visit in with the sleigh ride and it may be an easier location for us to meet and park, instead of Mt. Snow. I'm trying to determine which activity would provide more fun and laughs, as well as some humorous photos. (Need a funny one to top Carly's brother's kayak dive!)

I just did a search on "snow tubing" on Dogpile.com and chose the video search option. Seeing the clip from the Today Show called "Serious Snow Tubing Accident", as well a a couple of others, has steered me towards the sleigh ride as the safer group activity between the two. These were simply a couple of ideas off the top of my head to add to Bald Eagles excellent research on a Dover/Manchester trip.

I'm not wild about the inability to steer a snow tube or slow it down. Ramps and speed bumps are built to reduce speed near the bottom of the slopes which can cause some folks to be airborne. The video I just saw shows a woman landing on her NECK! Ouch!! Remember "coasters" as a kid? These operate on the same principal and are not without risk for adults. It's probably a lot of fun, but won't be everyones cup of tea.

"Rooms" in VT are not cheap, since most seem to be Inns and Bed & Breakfasts. There are some nice ones under the "lodging" link on the Adams Family farm link in my earlier post. These are a kind of pricy and holiday rates are a little higher. Those of you who are thinking of staying over might want to check out some hotels in MA, (Greenfield or South Deerfield are about an hour and 15 minutes from Mt Snow), to find some better rates and availability.
Room availability might be a factor in which weekend will work best.

Looking forward to nailing a date down!:)

We could get rooms in Brattleborro. It's an hour away but the rates should be better and they have a Hampton Inn and Suites. I love this chain because they are super clean and always have friendly staff. OH! They give you hot breakfast in the morning!

HOTELS
The Quality Inn and Suites has a special winter package: $69.99 a night, they deliver a large pizza with one topping to your room and a hot breakfast.
http://www.qualityinnbrattleboro.com/packages1.htm

The Hampton Inn looks like it will be $149 a night. It says they will do a group rate for a minimum of 5 rooms. The $149 might not be accurate since I don't know the actual dates.

Then we come to this incredibly cool art deco hotel The Latchis. They have a movie theater in the hotel!! They also operate a brew pub. They have a 2 bedroom suite for $155. Other rooms start at $75.
http://www.latchis.com/hotel.html

The Latchis might be the better choice only because it puts us right in the heart of downtown Brattleboro.

From Dictionary.com:

weetweet

\Weet"*weet`\, n. [Native name in Victoria.] A throwing toy, or implement, of the Australian aborigines, consisting of a cigar-shaped stick fastened at one end to a flexible twig. It weighs in all about two ounces, and is about two feet long.

Hey Bald Eagle......I've been meaning to ask you about the origin of the name for this E-vent, so I looked it up. I'll have to start looking for weetweets, but don't know of any Australian aborigine toy stores 'round here!

And what's the plan if the weather is WARM AND SUNNY!?

I just checked the Adams website again and they state they may cancel sleigh rides up to 3 hours prior for different reasons. They instruct people traveling long distances to call first to confirm the sleigh ride. What irony in us worrying about the weather being too NICE for our meet!

Maybe we could still meet at the farm or in Manchester/Dover, shop, eat, sightsee and meet up somewhere later on before crashing the Misfits place in Brattleboro!

Hello Salmonhole,
Welcome to EOC and thanks for joining us on this thread!:)

I appreciate you sharing your 30 years of holiday weekend observations with us. I'm guessing you must be in the hotel or restaurant business, and if you are, I know you are busting your hump on these weekends. I've been in the hospitality industry for the past thirty plus years myself, and know where you are coming from!

I think what it comes down to is this:

What weekend works best for OUR small group of New England/New York folks that have jobs, to drive two, three or four hours for a meet, stay overnight, drive home and go back to work? Many people find it is easier to do this when you have a Monday off to drive home, unpack, rest, etc. If rooms ARE available for those who need them, if the sleighs CAN be reserved, and if there IS still some food, beer & wine left in VT, then IMHO there is no real problem.:-D

Looks like we owe Bald Eagle a big round of thanks for creating the poll for this thread, which will be the determining factor. I propose we set the deadline for the poll to be 12:00 pm on Wednesday, 1/25/06 so Bald Eagle can make the official announcement and we all can mark our calendars !:)

Sorry for my absence but when remember Vinnie got skunked and I said I'm all for a winter meet and he should be smelling better by then, well, just after that he was running and ripped his acl ligiment totally off his knee. So, his cast just came off and we are wintering through with recovery. He was only doing his job and chasing the deer out of the yard, and keeping them from having dinner on my bushes. All is well now and we're in for a winter meet in Feb. (Vinnie will stay home this time though).

Any weekend, any place, although ElementGirl and I have the same desire, sitting by the fire with a warm drink in hand.
nice to be back for meet #4, I think?

Hi jurneez,

Glad Vinnie is on the road to recovery and that you'll be able to make the trip!

Hello everyone!

I have been looking forward to a winter get together of our group, but I will not be able to make it on the 19th. I already took the day off & made plans:sad:

It looks like the majority is favoring the 19th as the event date. If for some reason the date changes or my plans get canceled, I'll be able to make it. Since I work Sundays & Holiday Mondays, it is hard to get the days off. It would be nice if we could do a meet on a Saturday some time.

Hi Jurneez. I'm glad to hear that Vinnie is on the mend. If we don't get to have that drink together this meet, maybe the next.

I'll be watching the site to see what you guys decide.

Hey everybody,

I love trains too! Even have an ho train table right smack in the corner of my living room. Had to be near the woodstove ya know. Last 2 weekends, I plastered the mountains. This weekend I'm painting little buildings.
Maybe even put in the fake water. But I think you're right, I don't believe the trains run in the winter.
I did trains and steam trains all over New England as a vacation one year. What a blast. They're might be train museums though?

Element Grrl, you and I will have that drink for sure, sometime.....
Bald Eagle, photo shop fun with the sign? You're too funny, made me belly laugh.
Uncle Mike, glad to hear from you too, don't forget our hot match with the peppers, maybe next summer.
When a weekend is decided upon can we get an email? I missed the part about being over night, although that's okay with me......I could use some get away fun....Was it suggested for one over night or the long weekend or what?

love to all,
jurn

Actually it's www.churchsigngenerator.com (http://www.churchsigngenerator.com). I use it a lot for birthday e-mails.

Although it's not conclusive, it looks (so far) like the 19th is the preferred date and the focus of the event will be the sleigh ride on Sunday. Some people will be making it an overnighter in Brattleboro (The Latchis?) and doing some extemporaneous sightseeing/shopping/skiing or other activity beginning with the letter "s". My guess is that the event may expand to include some additional pursuits as we discuss our individual discoveries on the sleigh ride.

Time for a head count. I looked back through the thread and this is what I came up with...

The Rube?

I have compiled a contact list of previous attendees and folks who have posted a New England location on the EOC site. I have e-mailed or pm'd everybody on that list except for those who have already posted something on this thread or have blocked any contact. I'll update the list as we move along. Let me know if I have my head screwed on wrong about any of this, then I'll make an official announcement and see if we can get it posted on the EOC home page (although for some reason previous PR requests have fallen on deaf ears). Who's doing an overnighter? Sat-Sun? Sun-Mon? Sat-Mon? Do we need some kind of deposit for the sleigh ride? I haven't really looked into that. Mike??

All in favor? Opposed?

Glad you asked that chief!:)

I just called Adams Farm and here is the answer regarding reservations:

Reservations ARE Required: Call 802-464-3762
Available Tuesdays through Sundays

A Credit Card is required and you Must cancel 3 hours prior otherwise you will be charged for the number of reservations made regardless of who shows up.

Sunday Sleighs depart at:11:30 am, 12:15, 1:00, 1:45, 2:30, 7:30 pm

I was thinking of making the reservation for everyone myself, but can't afford to get stuck paying for anyone who dosn't show up or cancel in time. The woman I spoke with said the best way is for everyone to make their own reservation with their own credit card.

We need to agree on a sleigh ride time and all make ressies for that time slot as soon as possible. I was told all time slots are still available as the moment but that the earlier time slots sell out first due to the out of town tourists who do not want to get home late.

Any time is ok with us although I would think the 11:30 am time might work best for EOC folks who also have a distance to travel home or want to do something else before they leave.

The sleigh ride is also subject to weather conditions and I was surprised to learn that the sleighs are not running this week, because there is still not enough snow on the ground. The Adams Farm can also cancel sleigh rides right up to three hours prior, which means unless we call to confirm the ride is on, it may be canceled and we won't know until we show up. In order for me to sleep well between now and the meet, I need to know that everyone is ok with this, will have a good time meeting, finding something else to do, and most importantly won't be upset with me for pitching the idea!

Soooo....lets make some suggestions on a sleigh ride time RIGHT NOW. There is not enough time for another poll, so how about if Bald Eagle and I confer, and post a sleighride time that seems to be best, along with the "offical" date, by tommorrow at approximately 12:00 pm ?

Bald Eagle: sound ok to you?

(p.s.---Denise & I might stay over on Sunday night, not sure yet...Latchis sounds good)

All ride times work for me. I checked quickly & found Dot's Resturant downtown Wilmington. Listed as cheap & good. I'm planning on staying Saturday & Sunday.

+1 includes you and the wife. +2 includes you, the wife and the girlfriend. This could be our most interesting event yet!

That means we have 13 (or 14, depending on Dom) so far. Sleigh holds 15-18.

Okay, the options have been discussed, the votes cast, and the results are in. Rather than have people wade through all of the posts on this thread, I started a new one for the official announcement and information. http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?p=216985#post216985

Did you go somewhere for the winter retreat yet? If not, why don't you all consider Newport, Rhode Island.

I will try to read the postings more often.

Hello Judy!

We had the winter meet in February on the holiday weekend (Presidents Day).

Here is the link with containing the announcement, the follow posts and some great photos:

http://www.elementownersclub.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20534

Keep checking the New England threads as there is some discussion about a possible New Bedford meet and maybe one on the Cape. Newport is also a GREAT idea and one I know my wife would be excited about. Please feel free to throw out any suggestions you may have only I would start a new thread so people see it. Hope you can make the next meet.

Thanks for dropping in!:-D

Judy-

You should have gotten a PM (private message) about the last meet unless it was blocked. You're on the contact list! Newport, Rhode Island? Hmmmmm, why not?
