: New 2005 - 1st oil change- problem

So i go to get my first oil change in my new E, the tech calls me in and says that he doesn't want to do anything further and that I should bring the vehicle back to the dealership because there's a problem.

He says when he removed the oil filter there was a thick sludge coming out of the filter, he says that it is indicative of water mixing with oil and he is not sure why or what caused this but it obviously should be looked at.

I'm going to try to get to the dealership in the next few days but has anyone heard of this or have any ideas?

I'm wondering if perhaps at the factory perhaps the filter was not tightened down enough and maybe water got in through the seal? I'm thinking that would probably be the best case scenario. Worst case would probably be there is water in the engine somewhere?

Ughh.... For as much crap as Mitsubishi gets, I had two brand new Mitsu's for the past 8 years and never put EITHER of them in the shop. I've got this thing for two months and I'm already worried about engine problems.... ***fingers crossed***

Thanks for any help!

That sounds like a problem that is a lone incident, and not really related to reliability of Honda's in general. Stuff happens to all manufacturers.

That being said, I would recommend you not drive your E except to get it to a dealer. I would hate to have this relatively small problem balloon into your engine "blowing up". Good luck and let the forum know the outcome of your dealership checkup. :)

If the dipstick comes out white or tan in color, then don't drive it!! Thats water!
It cant come in from a loose oilfilter. It may be a head gasket, or leaking intake manafolde. Or a crack in the block. I would have it towed in to the dealer.

Water coming in from the intake manifold will cause HYDROLOCK. The pistons will bind to the cylinder walls... The engine will NOT start when this occurs. THIS can't be the cause...

As Dom.five suggested, a bad head gasket or cracked block could allow coolant into the oil. An warped head (possibly caused by overheating) can do the same. The dipstick should tell the tale.

Hydrolock is huge when it comes to engine damage. I had a '98 Mercury Grand Marquis as my first car (it was willed to my mother) and it suffered catastrophic failure from hydrolock. The pistons fused to the walls at 65 mph on the PA turnpike. Blinding white smoke came out of the tailpipe and the engine never turned a revolution after that. Because it was a Ford, it had no value without an engine, and we donated it to a charity instead. Please don't put off getting this checked out.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm going to cruise up to the dealership tomorrow, no appointment though, I hope they can look at it because Im in absolutely no position to be without a vehicle.

as someone said...can't be a leak in the oil filter gasket as oil pressure is much too high and it would leak out oil everywhere

can't be from water ingested in via the intake manifold b/c it would get burnt or cause hydrolock and not contaminate the oil (sealed off by headgasket and piston rings)

if there is water in your oil it is most likely from a headgasket but the first signs would be oil in the water system b/c oil pressure > water pressure (gives it a milkshake color or also known as a baby poo brown liquid color)

now for the next point and please don't be offended: a lot of times people complain about cars reliability but they themselves are the culprit by abusing it or ignoring warning signs (like a lady i worked with and her CR-V within 50k miles (bought used at 100k and drove until 150k) until the engine died and she said hondas were junk - only to find out she never had an oil change or had maintenance done as her ex husband used to do all that for her - leading me to understand why he left her)

now, did you overheat the car - go way too long without an oil change or not check oil every month or so - do something very bad (like shift into 2nd at 90mph? - negates the rev limiter) - or submerge the car under water causing water ingestion but not hydrolock warping the head causing a headgasket leak?

^^I did not do anything that you have mentioned. i have only had the vehicle for a month, it's brand new.

Well anyway, I just got back from the dealership, they took the oil filter off and found nothing, and said everything looked fine (figures) I have no idea what happened to the thick sludge that the technician at my local oil change shop literally put his finger in the oil filter, pulled out and showed me. Anyway, I guess it's good news that the dealership says there is nothing wrong.

However, when the dealership tech was checking it out, he found a leaking CV boot that was spewing fluid (lubricant?) everywhere. So they had to order up that part..........

Thanks for the help everyone, I'll be sure to post if there is any further chapters to this story......

How many miles were on the car when you had your FIRST oil change??? The MANUAL indicates the first oil change to be at 10,000 miles...
Secondly, You cannot drive the car around with a torn CV boot... Damage will be induced on the CV joint...The dealer should have given you a rental....
