: gasoline stains on the plastic panels?

I have searched the EOC boards and googled for hours without success, so please be gentle.

my husband spilled some gas while filling the E a few weeks ago and even tho it was wiped up immediately, it left a lighter streak in the plastic from the filler door to the wheel well.

any suggestions on how to get this off? I thought I remembered reading a post about gasoline and the plastic (and how stupid it is to build a car with apparently gasoline-dissolvable plastic surrounding the little hole where we put the gasoline) but I can't find it with the search feature.

so far we have tried: 303, back to black, armorall (in desperation), peanut butter, WD40, and a few other things I can't recall just now. most of them make the stain disappear while wet, but it reappears once the panel is dry.

the panel was recently 303ed before the incident, I don't know if that helped or hindered the staining.

we can't be the only people who spilled gas on their Element. any helpful thoughts or suggestions??

Perhaps Simple Green, or baby oil. I have dropped a few drops of gas and never had a problem but, if I did, I would try these products. I would have said Armorall but you said that didn't work. By teh way where are you from in Central CA?

I know Honda has made a product (the name eludes me) specifically for the plastic panels of the Element. It's designed to fill and repair scratches. If you search for Spray and Scratches, you should find it.

The other solution that may work is to use MR. Clean Eraser. These things are absolutely fantastic. I did all the panels and I couldn't believe how clean they became. It didn't leave a stain, residue, etc.

Hope something works for you.

I would try either poorboy's trim restorer or black again. There are a few online retailers that sell both. I have and use both. If you were close by, you could just come over and use some. Do you know any detailers?

yes...i too have spilled gas on the plastic several times ....but i have not had any problems with it streaking or anything ...once the gas evaporates it looks like it always has....maybe you should just wash it really good

it's been washed very thoroughly a few times, but the dern mark still shows. maybe the gas had some odd reaction w/the 303.

not sure the Mr Clean eraser would work, but we have one somewhere and I will dig it out and try it. didn't think of baby oil. I have heard the Honda scratch filler works well on scratches and may try as a last resort.

thanks for your help!

Mr P: we are in the lovely Fresburg section of Central Cal. the armpit of Cali, but so close to everything.

I would try both the eraser and the baby oil. One of those will work.

P.S. I'm in V-town. See you on the road perhaps.

Just curious but I wonder if the "black" panels have anything to do with the streaking. Maybe not the cause but with making it more prominent. Everyone in this thread, including myself, that has spilled gas plenty of times on the panel all have the gray panels. It's probably just a chemical reaction with what you may have had already on the panel but something just ponder about.

you may be on to something there....nice observation...i didn't catch that myself....maybe those panels are made a little diferently or it just shows up more because they are black...hmmmmm
