: Indestructible Dog Toy ??

We've been on a quest for an "indestructible" dog toy for our 9 month old Black Lab, "Obi". He's mowed through everything we've given him so far except tennis balls . . . (but he's learned how to throw the tennis balls back at us fairly accurately and with a lot of force  which is really obnoxious)

These showed up today on the Big Brown truck that normally brings Element parts:

The most durable toy for a labrador is another labrador.

Kong's are highly regarded for durability, but my dogs have never been thrilled with them. Perhaps if you stuff some treats they'd hold interest.

Gidget's a big fan of the "Buddy Ball" -- they come in a small and a larger model. They also have blinky light versions and glow in the dark. Not indestructible but the most durable balls I've seen.

Gidget's a notorious Buddy Ball thief at the park so I've had to stock up and compensate her victims. There's no Buddy Ball quite like another dog's Buddy Ball. :)

Does Obi have dedicated chewing items? Bully sticks last a good while but I don't let Gidget have them unsupervised. Gidget gets a lot of mileage out of stuffed beef bones, but I have to buy the thickest bones I can find or she will chip off pieces.

At 9 months, Gidget's favorite chew toys were black Nordstrom pumps. Rights. I have three extra lefts to commemorate her adolescent era. I eventually learned to lock up all shoes.

Box4Rox . . . .

You aren't exactly the sharpest crayon in the box are you ?

NEVER, ever throw a toy at me and tell me it's "in-dee-struk-table".
What, you think I'm dumb and can't read or sumptin' ? I timed myself (with a watch I stole from you last week . . . . hehehe) and I was showin' toy guts at the 12 minute mark sucka !!!! hahaha. At the 15 minute mark I had the lame-o squeeky thing out and was flingin' it at the mangy cats you make me share the house with

I'm really thinkin' that fake spare tire in the E is the ticket for me pal . . . come see me and we'll talk about it . . .

You need one of these (Blauwerk Willy), a shock-corded tow line and padded harness (www.alpineoutfitters.net (http://www.alpineoutfitters.net)), and 6-10 miles of path that Obi can pull you on. Then he'll nap more, chew less. ;-)

Gidget gutted countless stuffed animals. Anything with fabric will not last, especially at that age.

http://www.blauwerk.com/Foto/willyltd.jpg

Or the Diggler:

http://www.dogscooter.com/dogscooter/images/alpha_000.jpgNote the dual drop outs in the rear. The dropouts for the twenty inch wheel are above and behind the ones used by the sixteen inch wheel in the photo. Notice also the way the three down tubes are arranged in a triangular manner to stiffen the front end. The front end angles back for secure tracking. This is a brawny scooter. The slight slope of the frame from front to rear facilitates sliding over rocks and roots.

The dogsare in the photo for scale. The 12 year old rottweiler is 100 pounds. The one year old presa canario is 73 pounds. Notice the wide comfortable handlebars and the underside covered and protected by the skid plate.
Scooter racers in Australia choose 20 inch wheels because they are large enought to roll over rough ground and yet small enough to make turns at race speeds. The advantage of a scooter with a 16 inch wheel in back shows up on as designer Rob Fruhtenicht says is that it is extremely agile at 'carving turns'. He loves to charge (no dog; yes gravity) down a mountain and carve up and down embankments. Less roatational mass in the rear allows tighter easier turns. Especially with the skateboard deck that grabs your boot so you won't slip off. "Hike it up, you huskies!"

When our Westy mix was a pup a passerby told me he thought it was not a good idea to let her chew glasses? I looked at what she was doing, $200 prescription sunglass chew toy- DOH! 17 years later and I still can't figure out how she got them. Good times. :)

One of my friends has a Lab/Great Dane mix. Big and not the sharpest tool in the shed by a long shot. He like to play with cobblestones. Yep cobblestones the kind you make streets out of. He also has a bowling pin. Don't how he got it but likes to whack people in the shins when he runs by you

Only thing that has lasted more then a few minutes with my dogs is the Super Kong and pressed rawhide bones. The bones are given for a "timed chew of 15-30 minutes a few times a week"" and then taken away. My dogs have destroyed multiple regular kongs, all kinds of toys and even cracked a hard plastic Tiger ball. Good luck.

do your dogs carry the sad little carcasses of the unstuffed toys around in their mouth for months?

I'm going to try one of these next: http://www.ihelppets.com/Dog-Chew-Toys/firehose-dog-toys.htm

it's a tough call - $1 stuffed animals from the dollar store that are unstuffed in 60 seconds or less, or expensive "indestructible" chew toys that are unstuffed in 60 seconds or less?

the dogs seem to like the $1 toys better, they keep the carcass and carry it around jealously. we tried throwing them away, but they knocked over the trash can (for the first time ever - not usually trash-pickin' dogs, thank goodness!).

Haha – The buddy ball story is funny . . . I’m pretty sure if Gidget met Obi in the park he would be her next victim.:D

I thought it was funny that the new “indestructible” toy was ripped open in just a few minutes . . . the Tuffies website has a quote on it somewhere that says “Finally, a toy that lasts longer than 15 minutes” . He does have dedicated chew toys (lots and lots) and for the most part everything is pretty normal. Outside toys are fine, he has a lot of Kong, Air Kong and Booda’s on ropes that he runs around with. The door mats take a hit every once in a while too . . .

Inside the house is where the problem is:

• Buddy balls and oversized tennis balls – great, he loves them outside but we can’t have them inside because he flings them at people, cats and Trinitrons and plays soccer really rough and knocks things over.:x

• Bully Sticks – he really loves those but my wife found out what they are made from (steer pizzle) and said “no way” inside the house.

• Cow hooves – another no way; they are hard, sharp and get flung as much as the buddy balls.

• Healthy Edibles from Nylabone – he loves these but they really aren’t intended to be a permanent chew toy; takes about 45 minutes to finish off the “wolf” size ( at $ 4 a pop !!)

• Soft toys with a noise maker are the only thing that he can play with inside for hours and hours unsupervised. No noise = no play.

o FatCats - He has 4 or 5 of these and 2 are still surviving; it’s pretty random when and why he decides to execute them.

http://www.fatcats.com/html_site/dogs.shtml

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/box4rox/Dogs/nasties-up.gif

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/box4rox/Dogs/nasty-rotten.gif

o The Tuffies toy I showed in the pics is actually OK . . . once he chewed the corner off, removed ½ the stuffing and one of the squeakers he stopped. It still has one squeaker and makes an obnoxious rattling noise and he’s fine with that. Sort of like he killed it and made a trophy out of it.

• Another one he really likes is a “Quirkie” by Booda. It is made out of the same rubber as Kongs but has a slide whistle inside that’s activated by dropping or shaking. Drives him crazy . . . . He spends a lot of time trying to "get the noise"

• Air Kong also makes a flat bone out of the yellow tennis ball material that squeaks pretty good. I think that will be around for a while . . .

Thanks for the tips . . . The scooter thing really has me thinking . . . :)

The bully sticks work for our Westie too (if only to keep him occupied for a few minutes while we remove the detritus from his latest toy "victims) but they smell ABSOLUTELY GROSS!

I shudder just thinking about Dexter coming up to lick my face after chewing on bulls testicles for a few minutes. The smell permeates his fur for quite a while after a few minutes of chewing.

Yeah, the chewable nylabones are too expensive given they last only a short time.

Funny you should mention the dangers of dogs flinging balls! Dexter has taken to stripping the hide partly off a tennis ball, holding the hide and then smacking the ball into my shins as he shakes it from side to side! Quite painful.

We can get hockey practice balls for a buck each so I will be trying those next.

Hey,

My dog, Chip would destroy a brand new tennis ball in a matter of seconds. First he'd shread the cover off, then he'd pop it. If I didn't take it away fast he'd then eat it.

Just try taking a toy away from a MAMSTAFF (MASTIF + AMSTAFF) around 125lbs! You have to first catch him, sit on him and then distract him with another toy! And then try to pull it out from the "JAWS OF DEATH". LOL

I miss him dearly as he passed on from DM.

Thx, Phil

Throw my dog a Tennis ball and he pops it on the first bite. I could throw him a case of tennis balls and he would pop the whole case in a few minutes. Pop and shred is his favorite games.

We stopped with the Tennis balls because there is a chemical in the tennis balls that rots/weakens a dogs teeth. Yeah my dog still occasionally finds old Tennis balls and proceeds to shred it. I'm talking tennis balls and a chew happy dog over a span of time.

The partially chewed 16" pressed rawhide bones are stored in a plastic bag in the fridge. Unchewed bones can be stored at room temperature. But once the dog starts chewing the bone and their saliva starts breaking down the pressed rawhide, keep it in the fridge, especially in summer months. It keeps bacteria down. Also make sure the dogs chew the bones on floor. My dogs make a frothy mess. The controlled chew is actually for their teeth and gum health. A good 15-30 min. chew 3-4 times a week will eliminate tartar much more effectively then just brushing their teeth.

P.S.

We usually time the chew for right after dinner. This mimics the feeding behavior of wild dogs/wolves chewing/breaking bones during wild feeding time

One common thread runs through these posts...

... we're all masochists. :)

But our dogs are well worth it.

RE: scootering. IT IS SUCH A BLAST!!!! Any dog or combo of dogs weighing over 30 pounds can pull a scooter.

However, I still have not seen any pics of a team of chihuahuas.

My dog (1-year-old Scottie) will destroy any "indestructible" toy in a matter of minutes. We tried all of the ones mentioned above, and they all fell victim to the jaws of death. Or the Jaws of Maggie.

http://www.mcgillivray.org/Jody/JodyPics/images/im002863.jpg

She has a couple of Kongs, but isn't really crazy about the rubber toys. I guess it's not satisfying enough. The stuffed toys all go very quickly (most within minutes), although I've had slightly better luck with the Hurl-a-Squirrel (http://www.shopusanimal.com/squirrel.html) or the Fire Hose Toy (http://www.kyjen.com/dogtoys/page_01.shtml)...those might live for 2-3 days.

So one day I picked up one of these Nylabone Double-Action Chews (http://www.nylabone.com/default.aspx?pageid=111&prodID=60). She chews on it so hard it makes the living room floor vibrate, but it doesn't fall to pieces. Eventually, the hard nylon ends get so ragged that I replace the toy, but that usually takes a couple of weeks. At $10 each, they're kind of expensive but they're cheaper than shoes, carpet, my laptop, my car keys, the deck, the parking brake lever in my Saab, the stone tiles by my front door, and the stuff I haven't found yet. Of course, all dogs are different so you may not get the same result...but it's as close as I've been able to find to a toy I can leave unattended with the dog for any amount of time.

If anybody has a better idea, please let me know...I'm always looking for the truly indestructible dog toy...

I was really hoping the fire hose thingies would be the hot ticket . . . The first one lasted about a month but when he figured out how to chew the seams through, the next one only went a single day.

Oh, I almost forgot . . . I'm on my third cell phone case in less than two months.

Don't you believe it, pound for pound terriers are great torture testers for dog toys, especially when they are young.

Jaws of Death indeed! :D

Dexter aka the Toy Terrierist is 3.5 months and just getting into the chewy stage. It's going to be an expensive year or so for dog toys if he is anything like Maggie!

Chance destroys "stuffies" in no time flat! Chance wins stuffed dog toys at dog shows. I save them and donate them to the shelter charity at Camp Gone to the Dogs.

Chance also destroys tennis balls. I take the toys away from him after we play retrieve. Bully sticks are the only thing he likes to chew. He has raw hide toys and does not chew them. The firehose retriever dummy seems to hold up well. He had rope toys that seem to last longer than other things. I cut off the frizzle ends so he has the rope part and the knot to chew. He is not crazy about kongs. He does like the kong rubber bone. I got him a purple rubber bone that can be stuffed. Am saving that for Christmas.

I got him one of the indestructable toys for Christmas. It will be interesting to see how long it lasts :D

Chance's "uncle" Wolf, babies his toys . . . apparently Chance inheirted his Daddy's destruction gene.

It freaked everybody out . . . he is a serial toy killer. Only thing missing is a chalk outline.

He surgically removed the squeaker, tossed it on the coffee table and now could care less about this toy. Maybe I should look into having him work for the LAPD Bomb Squad . . . :)

Fortunately, our dog isn't the chewing machine that others are. But, she does love to chase anything that rolls....which lead me to believe that these might survive the mauling.

Hysterical pic of the gutted toy and a great pic of Obi running through the surf!

Gidget raked the gifts in this Christmas, including a stuffed "Reindeer Tick."

Yep, a tick. And it's the first stuffed toy she has not been interested in. Tick trauma, perhaps, as she had a couple this fall. Traumatized me.

I can't find the wire to download the photos but I have put together a wonderful photo array of destruction, and then her own toy, a duck, that NEVER gets abused. She just steals her brother's toys and wrecks them. He is a chocolate colored lab/german short-haired pointer mix.

BTW, her AKC name is pretty scary; April's Keisha Kiki Ray
