: Add "Gender" to profile?

I'd like to see a Gender option added to the User Profile. You often can't tell the gender of the writer by their user name/avatar.

It would also help the statisticians when sorting user data down the road.

I wouldn't object, but you should make it so people don't have to answer if they don't want to.

Also, isn't Gender different from Sex? I thought Gender was a "role", like masculine/feminine. I'm assuming you mean male/female.

I guess "gender" is a PC way of saying the S word, so it keeps people from saying "sex? yes please!" hehe

Yes. We must keep it clean! LOL

It's a good idea (if optional) - in some cases it's pretty obvious but for others, not so. Wonder how many female members (who are active) there are? I mean my E is a "joint" owner but it's "my" car so I am the one who's doing everything and I am female. In most threads it doesn't make any difference but once in a while it makes a huge difference.

Oh, I thought we were still talking about "sex."

But seriously, gender/sex is one of those things you can't "not" answer. If a woman doesn't want to be as such, by marking "prefer not to answer," she's as much as marking "female."

As for stats, ok, maybe if the info isn't going to be shared.

Yeah, I'd like the 5MT/AT distinction to show. MPG, acceleration, reliability, towing...there are lots of times I look it up in the personal profile.

Beaker
02-08-2006, 03:07 PM
If a woman doesn't want to be as such, by marking "prefer not to answer," she's as much as marking "female."that's why it needs to be like the location field, so you're left with the question: did they forget to put that in, or are they being private?

and it should be clearable, unlike the "year of your car" field where you can't clear the answer once you answer it

the states of the answer should be "male/female/unanswered"

rhythm_ace
02-08-2006, 03:09 PM
It could be very useful...sometimes knowing that the person with the question is a female means that you don't take as much for granted about mechanical things etc. But the woman can still indicate it if/when she wants.

I should put that I'm female, even though I'm male, so I can get a more complete answer? :) I don't know jack about cars, I need all the explination I can get

I agree with Ramblerdan, we need a manual/automatic option more than a sex option.

Gender is OK by me but what I really I want to know how people put a toilet paper roll on the roller. Those folks that let the toilet paper roll out from the bottom instead of over the top are really weird in my book. Knowing that would explain a lot about some folks around here.

Honestly I do not think it that there should be a gender identification. Firstly.. it does not and should not matter. Secondly... I have seen (many times) females take male names and represent themselves as males and vice versa. Ultimatley I could have come in here with the name Harry and been a guy with no problem.
I also do not think that all women know less about mechanics than men. I know nothing but I have a few girlfriends that would put most men to shame.

I just think that we should NOT be making that an issue.
I do not see why that would be helpful in any way.

It is more important to see where people live and details about what they are driving so that we can make assumptions like mpg. auto/vs manual etc etc.

Well, my reasoning is that: when ready to tear, I can hold the top of the roll with one hand, and pull from the bottom with the other, using the rest of the roll as a Toilet Paper Stabilizer and tear evenly across the perferations.

Seriously ... you asked ... so I told!

Too many identifers in the profile and it'll start sounding like a singles ad! haha.

And I don't really care whether there's a M/F/unk section, but I'd have probably put F had it been asked at the beginning. I think my avatar makes it obvious at this point.

[QUOTE=trinacook]And I don't really care whether there's a M/F/unk section/QUOTE]

If you want the "PC" language (and I know that many here don't!!) the options should be M/F/T/Q (Male, female, transgendered, questioning). Actually, there might be one more, but I can't remember.

Personally, I don't care about the gender breakdown of owners. As someone else posted, I am much more interested in identifying whether it's a manual or automatic transmission E.

Adding gender to a user's profile isn't an entirely bad thing, although I'm sure a certain percentage would choose to leave it out just like birthday and occupation.

Yes, alot of screen names are gender neutral, and there are some which include the member's name be it male or female. Some of us include our names at the end of our posts or in our signature lines.

A good number of members here know me as James since that is my real name and is often found in my signature. I don't think there is any confusion whether James is a male name or not.

Thats right, my name is James, my E has a manual tranny and my TP roll goes over the top.

I don't necessarily think a gender option is a good idea (except for you young single people looking for E love in all the wrong places), but M and F are good enough.... either pick what you are, what you want to be, or nothing.

I never gave an opinion on the gender being added to the profile on the site. As far as I'm concerned there is no need for it for a number of reasons.

There is no point in it being there. The mention of knowing whether to go into greater detail if a Female was asking a question is very sexist and not appreciated. I know many girls that can do complete engine rebuilds better than most guys.
Why give the guys any more reason to harrass some of the girls on this forum than they already have?
There are only 2 genders; M or F... if you want to know, ask the person. I can tell everyone now, I won't be adding it and I doubt Tom will either. There is no good reason to add it where it will benefit anyone. Should we next ask about sexual preference and household income?

This is a CAR forum, we are not taking surveys on anyone, we're not doing any sort of datamining of the for ad revenue or ad targeting. There isn't a reason to include it.

The transmission type made sense and was long over due to be included.

Actually I'm just a regular bald headed honky. But Larry makes a great point. There's no good reason to have gender listed in the profile. There are too many lonely dudes or skeezy assh0les lurking about that are just waiting for an invitation to make "true love" happen. Besides, with an accurate educated guess you can probably pick the gender just by the way they express themselves or by the words they use. An "M" or "F" by our names is just going to draw conclusions before we even read the actual post 1 inch down. Those conclusions may have harmless intentions or they may conjure stupid ideas. I'd hate to see people start talking chivalrous and noble all because the poster is a girl. If we had our races listed, $10 says someone will post replies to all the black dudes starting with "Yo." I don't want to upset the balance we have here. We may get into friendly pissing matches on here with certain topics from time to time but I think we all agree that as a whole, we get along pretty well. Personally I don't give a crap whether you're male or female. To me, cool is cool whether you're standing up or sitting down during the pissing match. Just be sure to clean up your own mess.
