: An hour to install steering wheel cover-#*$#! it's defective
Staggie 05-31-2003, 10:53 PM Waaaaaaah!
After an hour of pulling thread tightly and carefully aligning at the beginning, my two color green/black leather steering wheel cover is installed. Hmm, looks a little off...but it's perfect at the bottom, why is the top uneven???
Ah ha, the left black section is one inch longer than the right black section. :?
Well, now for the returns ringamarole (sp?). Maybe it'll go faster the second time.
T Mac 05-31-2003, 11:28 PM Sorry to hear the bad news. Hopefully you get a new one in a jiffy!
Staggie 06-01-2003, 12:37 AM Thanks TMac. I'm actually a little worried as hondacuraworld's site says they wont accept returns on defective merchandise or on items which have been installed. I sent them an email to see if I can get an RMA, but the policy worries me. I'm not sure what I can do since it's defective.
Don Clarence 06-01-2003, 03:24 PM That really is bad. All that time spent goes wasted. I wish you not having problem exchanging/returning the cover and better luck with the next one.
lon777 06-02-2003, 08:51 PM Staggie - Bummer to hear about your wheel cover woes. hope you can get a replacement quickly. I spent about 45 minutes sewing mine on and it was most definitely worth the work.
psm0110 06-03-2003, 11:33 PM I did a crap job sewing mine on. I need to do it over. Any idea where I can pick up that waxy thread?
Kayakin' Dan 06-03-2003, 11:57 PM A marine store should have the waxy thread...Or a sewing shop, but I couldn't be sure about the sewing shop.
lon777 06-04-2003, 06:22 AM Stores like Tandy leather co. that specialise in leather goods have the waxed thread and the large needles. When i restore leather steering wheels, i always go there for my materials.
smook 12-24-2007, 12:31 PM Is this why I should pay the Honda TECH $90 to install ?
Let me know how to proceed.
(for an ELEMENT SC).
Cheers! Merry Xmas everyone.
Bill.;-)
Seattle SC 12-24-2007, 01:58 PM My dealer told me (when I picked up the SC after it was done) they send out the steering wheel to have the covers installed.
I wondered a bit about them dealing with the airbag and all, but wherever they sent it too did a fab job on mine.
You might ask the dealer if they outsource it and go directly to the place they use - might save a few bucks.

Before you write off the thing, you might want to make sure that you've got the sections aligned up right. I had a similar situation when installing mine, but upon looking at it I realized I had it turned 90 degrees incorrectly.
Of course, with your two-tone cover it's probably harder to make that mistake--mine is all black, so the only way to tell the sections apart are by the perfs.

You can also get the thread and needle from HandA, if you're looking for actual OEM thread. I think it's like seven bucks before shipping.

Trevor at HandA sells the waxy thread for the steering wheel cover, as a seperate item in case someone messes it up of gets knots in it and can't get them out. Pretty sure it comes with the needle as well.
I did a fairly nice job on mine, but it is a bear to do.
SurfAndSand 01-25-2008, 02:41 PM I thought it was closer to 3 bucks.
To help make sure all the colored sections stay aligned, make sure you use even pressure when pulling all your stitches tight. Take your time, and pull firmly and evenly.
I had to undo a few stitches a few times because I got the order wrong when going around the spokes, but eventually got it right. It makes a big difference for me, as I have long fingers and found the stock steering wheel a little skinny feeling - not to mention I don't care for the cheesy plastic feeling. (I've come from a long line of using nice steering wheels - RX-7, S2000, Miata, other leather wraps, etc.)
good luck!
