daz72 03-22-2006, 12:08 PM thought you guys might get a kick out of this
I got this SOP '05 EX recently. Thought it was a bit soft looking, so threw on the black/chrome 18" rims. (I'm selling the stock rims and tires for $500 btw - see trading post).
Then for laughs, I got a cheap underbody LED kit off eBay - always wanted to try one of these things, and the wife said 'hell no' when I laid it out under her Porsche :D . Took a few hours to install, but came out well. I can turn it on/off, cycle through colors and patterns, all from a keychain remote. Evokes smiles from all who see it (hey, they could be laughing with me or at me, but I don't really mind  )
cheers

That's different. I have seen it done on motorcycles and sleds, but never on an "E".
MsMarvel 03-22-2006, 12:22 PM Don't be surprised if you get pulled over some night! I don't think the lights are legal.
Nice rims, though!
kissya 03-22-2006, 12:22 PM Thats so cool..I love it....:D
JPH102900 03-22-2006, 12:24 PM it may vary by state, but as far as i know it is completely legal where I live, as long as the actualy neon bulbs/leds are not visable
outpost4 03-22-2006, 12:30 PM ^ You can't have it on when you are on the road, either driving or parked on the side of the street. In a parking lot or your driveway, blink away. :)
I have a orange underbody LED kit on my SOP to compliment my orange interior lights.

daz72 03-22-2006, 12:30 PM I'm pretty sure they're illegal here in CA, while you are driving anyway.
I don't drive on freeways with them on, just cruising round local streets.
and certainly switch them off if I catch a glimpse of any 5-0
but yes, i think i could get pulled over in theory.
oh well, the price of artistry
$80 on eBay, in case anyone fancies trying - loads of kits for sale, from some company that imports them.
bacchus1310 03-22-2006, 12:36 PM It looks good, but not something i'll be putting on mine. Nice picts though .:D
3rdHonda 03-22-2006, 12:39 PM Ya know, I really don't like that on any other vehicle, but something about it on an E is just so entertaining. The E is just so...anti-ricer that the lights just make a statement, I guess. It'd be like Stephen Colbert talkin' like a gangsta!
M1 1I 1K 1E 03-22-2006, 03:16 PM hahaha, i've always wanted to get those neons too! I thought they'd be a riot on my wrangler, but I didn't know how easily the broke and I couldn't imagine they'd beo n that thing very long before i puntured them on something. I think white ones would look tight on my black E.
JPH102900 03-22-2006, 03:18 PM I have some really nice black ones mounted under my E.
ethos 03-22-2006, 03:49 PM Nice rims.
I don't like the lights but thats just me. Its one thing on a preformance car but on a utility vehicle like the E...I don't like it.
outpost4 03-22-2006, 03:53 PM I've never had an underbody kit before. I've never wanted an underbody kit before. But the Element is so fun, it was, "Why not?"
To each his own. But isn't that the mantra for the Element? :D
rhythm_ace 03-22-2006, 05:58 PM It looks like an E.F.O. coming in for a landing...I dig!
Why do they sell so many things that are "illegal" if they're illegal? And why exactly are they illegal? Just too distracting to other drivers?
elemento 03-22-2006, 07:57 PM Hey how about taking a few pics with your lights off and just with the neon...

As a proud member of the 5-0, I thought I'd shed some light on that. As stated above, I'm sure it does vary from state to state, in CA I can assure you that they are illegal. You are not required to see the bulb, even the glow is considered unlawful.
As to why they sell these...BECAUSE PEOPLE BUY THEM :) For a while the "cool" thing was to take off the windshield wiper fluid mounts off of the hood and replace them with lights. I personally thought that was obnoxious in addition to illegal, but that's just me. They offer all sorts of aftermarket products to trick out cars, but the vast majority of them are more or less there for car show purposes. The lighting devices typically fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, and more specifically the colors people choose are often illegal. Only red and amber can be visible to the rear (aside from backup lights) and only white and amber to the front. Again these are just CA laws, but are typically shared by other states as well.
So when you see those nifty lights again, before spending a bundle on them, keep in mind it might be more of a hassle than they are worth in the long run.

yeah, I kinda expected them to be poorly constructed, break, fall off after a few miles etc. But (to my surprise), they've been on over a month now - still holding strong, look and work like new. The LED tubes are tough plastic, so fairly sturdy.
and white is one fo the 7 colour choices in this set - you know it makes sense :D
daz72 03-24-2006, 12:10 PM Hey how about taking a few pics with your lights off and just with the neon...
yeah, I'll try to get better pics one of these days. Took those first ones with a little digital elph, so there's definitely much potential for better shots.
