i really don't want to gut my car and build some custom enclosure...currently, i have 2 12" kenwood excelon in a ported box. It fits in the trunk, BUT you can't recline the seats to put them up...anyways, what recomendations do you all have for having big subs...i was thinking of doing 2 boxes, so i havfe the option to have only 1 sub in the car at a time...to save space...what have you all done with this issue?

thanks!

I have the same thing you do. I dont know of any other option other than building some custom enclosure to go in the back storage area's. When I have some extra cash, I may check into that.

i've got a box for 2 10's, so it's probably a little smaller than your 12 box. my back seats go down enough. they don't go flat, or even close to flat, but they recline more than necessary for people who want to lean back in the back seats...eventually, i'll probably take out one of the woofers and get a smaller box for 1 10 inch sub, but until them i'm enjoying my 2 10's.

I have a gigantic box in my trunk.

Dimensions:
(H) Height x (W) Width x (D) Depth
17.25 in. x 32.25 in. x 22.00 in.
438 mm x 819 mm x 559 mm

I can lean my seats back to flip them up. Here's how:

Undo the latch on the floor that locks the seats down.
As you tilt the seat up, pull the strap that leans the seat back

With some practice, youll get the seat leaned back as you tilt it up. I flip mine up all the time and after a few times its a breeze.

mikie333,

try taking out the spare and building a box to fit in its cubby, that is how i am going to install my phoenix gold 12, and the 500 watt amp with a plexiglass cut out off the phoenix gold logo, then i am wrapping it all in vinyl to look stock. maybe that will help you, i hope!!!!!!!!!!

Kaboom!!

I have a massive box. It presents its problems, but I can't think of a way to keep the same airspace in the box make it "stealthier". Oh well, it's really not too bad of a trade off.

We've got an idiot that has to run his while in our parking lot. Not only is it rude to do crap like that, but what I find funny is that his car is a piece of crap. He's got this huge sound system in a falling apart Chevy S-10. Just doesn't make sense. Put your money into a real car instead of a stereo for something thats falling apart. lol What a goober.

Yeah, I honestly can't stand it when people to do that. The guy who lives downstairs from me (apartments) jams his stereo all the time and its like *thumpthump thump thump thump* all damn night long. All I can think about is getting my car, which is parked right in front of his window, and just POUNDING to get back at him. Because trust me, my E is louder than his crappy home stereo when it comes to bass.

But that would upset every else in my complex and I'm a nice guy, so...

I just dont like it when other people dont treat eachother with respect. Yeah, I like bass and I like it loud. But I dont want to irritate people with it.

Do you run those off the stock head unit?

Nope, I use an aftermarket Kenwood headunit with the kit flipped upside down:

The stock headunit doesnt have a high enough voltage for preouts, so I opted for a 5v unit.

My thoughts exactly.

I run mine off of the stock Head Unit. I didn't put it in though. I let the professionals do it.

I had those same speaker grills on my old setup:

http://sier_element.home.comcast.net/JACKED.jpg

Your setup looks good =] What are you using under the box to keep it from sliding around? If you look at the picture I posted with the two JL's you can see a piece of carpeted MDF under my speaker box. I found that having some carpet under my box really held it in place.

In my old setup I took a mousepad, cut it into 4 peices and mounted each piece to the corners of my box and that sucker didnt move a fraction of a millimeter. The box is coated in Linex, so it was scooting all over the place...

Who makes those speaker grills and are they available in a smaller size, say 8"? I am going to be re-doing my door speakers and had designed my own speaker grill that would look much like those. With my fiberglass build-out, I want the grill to well overlap the 6½" door speaker drivers, thus a 8" speaker grill would be perfect.

I honestly don't know the brand (mine came in an un-labeled plastic bag), but I can call the Stereo store I bought them from and ask them who the brand is. I bought them from "The Source Car Audio" in Marietta, GA (suburb of Atlanta). Don't EVER get anything installed there. They installed my Alarm and my mom could have done a better job. They drilled a hole for the LED (in my METRA stereo kit, thank god) and there were shavings hanging out of it. They couldnt fit the LED in the hole because it wasnt big enough, so they TAPED it behind the hole. That's right. With the plastic shavings hanging out (and somewhat blocking) the hole.

Those guys are totally brainless there, but they do carry some decent gear and will give you a good price. Just dont get anything installed.

Yuck, enough of my bad experience. I'll call and ask them who they get their grills from =]

I know they had several sizes, so 8" is probably being sold somewhere.

Ok, I just called and they said they do have 8" versions (but not in stock, of course) and the brand name is "Omega". Hope that helps. I did a google search, but havnt found anything yet.

Thanks for the research. You definitely did help. :) I have found similar grills in the past few minutes on both ebay and Parts Express, but still not 8". People don't stock too many 8" woofers and even less 8" accessories. I'm going to check with my employees. They may well know of a distributor. I'm just glad to find out they exist.

A couple of phone calls that began with, "Hi, my name is Gregg Mitchell and I own a stereo store in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and I saw some speaker grills on an Internet board..." netted me the info that these grills are actually made by a speaker box company, Audio Enhancers (http://www.audioenhancers.com/home.html). They don't make a 8" version. Shucks. I did send them an email asking (1) how wide is their 10" version, and (2) they wouldn't have any prototypes of 8" ones lying around, would they?

Thanks again for the help, Luke.

Its that blue matting that you can get at Boat Supply stores. I got mine at West Marine. They guy was real cool and gave it to me for free. I wasn't asking for that much, so he told me to take it. It works pretty good actually.

Damn, that sucks. I can see if maybe that stereo store can order them if you like. They might go through a different company that makes a similar style grill...

I still have my box with my 8's in it. I keep hoping i'll come into some cash and be able to build some custom enclosure for them. I want to put them back by the storage bins in the back. I think that is a great place for them, just dont have the fundage to work something like that. :(

They might go through a different company that makes a similar style grill...Thanks, but they are unique enough that I bet Audio Enhancers is the only supplier. Audio Enhancers is actually a huge pre-fab speaker box company, maybe the biggest. I'll have to tell the folks on the Ridgeline board that they now make a pre-fab box for that truck, downfiring twin 10" subs. I discovered that today.

It may be back to my original idea. I was going to use tubing you can get at a hobby shop and a tube bender to make my own grills. This just would have been easier.
