Don't pay when the subscription expires. Or are you trying to make a protest statement?

Just out of curiousity, what is Sirrus charging for sat/rad if (((XM))) is charging $77.00 per year for a subscription? Personally I like (((XM))) and for the money, you can't beat it. My iPod got no use when I drove my brothers Element from LAX to Indianapolis, IN in 36hrs. Hellava trip!

Actually XM only charges the $77 fee if you try and cancel. It is their way of retaining people. Sirius has not had to do this as people aren't trying to cancel in droves as has been the case with XM for the last few months.

Sirius charges $12.95/month. You can prepayIf you want; here are the 3 current plans:

1 Year: $145.45 (w/ 1 month free)
2 Years: $271.95 (w/ 3 months free)
Lifetime: $499.99 (Subscribe for the lifetime of your radio! Pay ONLY $499.99 once and forget about bills. Plus, act soon and you can transfer your lifetime subscription to a different SIRIUS Receiver when you upgrade or replace your radio — up to three times — for only $75 per radio. Offer ends July 31, 2006. Hurry!)

You can then add additional radios for $6.99/each for radios 2-4. Don't know what happens if you want a 5th radio. lol

I bought the 1 year, might transfer that to a lifetime before they cancel that.

Edit: I just checked XM's site for their fees and they are exactly the same as Sirius; except they offer 3, 4 and 5 yr plans and don't offer a lifetime plan.

As I said the $77/yr is an effort to try and keep you.

My contribution to this thread is changing the title so its not in some cryptic code.

I have Sirius and I paid one year in advance. As Larry stated, the $77/year XM deal is to hold onto subscriptions.

I am not trying to start another Sirius/XM debate. Just curious where this information came from? I'd like to read the article and see the numbers.

It is an observation based on various websites and what people are saying. I have been on all sorts of sites where people talk about both Sat providers and I have yet to hear anywhere near the number of people b!tching and moaning about Sirius as they do about XM. Everyone is constantly talking about cancelling the service. People want to remove their factory XM radios or how they can get them to work with Sirius instead.

I'm sure there are articles out there but I don't have the time or inclination to search for them. If XM didn't have a serious cancellation issue they never would have cut their 1 year contract in half to retain people in the first place. I have never seen anything like that from Sirius, have you?

it is funny. When the Sat thing started, I swore I'd never pay for radio.

Let's see. I pay approx 170 for Cell phones per month for the shared min for the family.

100 bucks for Direct TV various packages, (HBO, etc...)

Now, that My 3 months of XM will be expiring I have to decide. I'm sure if I ignore them and don't sign up, etc. they will offer the 77 buck thing. but what do I really get?

I live in L.A. I get good AM of Espn. I don't listen to Stern. I get good NPR. and news... We got great Rock, RAp, country, etc etc.

What do I really need it for? Traffice here is a constant reality. ONly on Xmas morning do you go for a drive and see no one!

The 77 a year not going to make or break me. But at some point, what's the point? Radio is free. XM still has commercials and Promo's in some form and if I want commercial free, I got the Ipod attached in my EXP.

I'm not bagging on XM. I'm not Bagging on Sirrus. I just don't need another bill for stuff I can easily get. It's funny. We get sucked in and we auto pay for stuff that we can live with out. Especially when good old free radio never let me down before. Plus I've noticed it doesn't work under bridges and Mall parking structures just like radio. It's just like radio on a lot of levels, only it cost money. If a commerical comes up on radio, I hit the auto scan button and in a few moments,... I'm commercial free.

a good alternative (if you live in the city) is HD Radio. You can get add-on tuners for just about every brand of aftermarket headunit. It is almost cd-quality, so its better than Sirius or XM, and AM is as clear as current FM is.

And there are no monthly bills...

But the tuners can be expensive. Kenwood's add on is 379.99 at Crutchfield, but you can buy headunits with built-in HD tuners cheaper than that.

Granted, you still have all the same radio stations you had before the upgrade, but the quality is impeccable...

thats fine Larry. I had mis-read it as coming from someplace specific, so I was incquiring about its whereabouts.

Well I liv in LA too, and while NPR is good, and we have lots of stations to choose from, there are tons of commercials, not to mention that they all seem to have an agenda in playing the same songs over and over and over again. I'm stuck in traffic often enough to make XM a no brainer at $77. That plus my ipod makes the built in cd player in my E virtually unused.

With lot's of phone calls and nashing of teeth.

<rant>
I had two XM Radios since 2002 and tried to cancel one of them 2 months ago(The radio died) using the web page. And couldn't. Just got a nice message saying you have to call in to cancel. Then I called in to cancel the one radio and got a 'very hard sell' to keep it (remember it's dead!) with a reduced (I was already only paying $6.95 for the second radio) rate and 2 months free. I said no and in protest (and I wasn't using the working radio that much at the time anyway) said tell you what I just want to cancel both radios. Then I got the 'even more reduced' rate (Around the $7.77 I keep hearing about but I think it was even cheaper...but I didn't write it down) and when I said no just cancel them both the nice lady said "Well my computer is down so let me take your info and I'll cancel them within 2 hours".

Well two days later the radio was still working. So I sent an email (just because I think they should let you use email as well so you don't have to go through the hard sell!) then got the 'you have to call' email even though they copied my original request, my 'I did call and they didn't do what they said they were going to do' request. So I called, this time I got someone with the hard sell, not quite as good a price as I remember from before and when I said no just cancel the account she said 'OK should take effect in a couple of hours'.

Two days later my radio is still working. 3rd call starting to be on the rude side. (Interrupting the hard sell, reduce pricing, months free, etc) And saying just cancel my account, getting the 'OK' then when asked if there was anything else asking for a supervisor to verify the account really was cancelled and that I would be refunded my money paid...Oh yeah they billed me an automatic renewal for 2 years against my Credit card with the same number but a different expiration date...I still can't figure out how that went through.

20 Minutes later the radio stopped working just back to channel 1.

</rant>

So...If you ever paid them be prepared to fight. If you just got the 'trial' just don't pay!

I have XM in the E and Sirius in the Mini. I enjoy both.

Why do I pay for radio? How many times can you listen to some guy rattle on about insurance quotes, or buying a new car, or hey, the Pizza at Domino's is DEEEEEEELishus!, etc.

Consider this. Satellite radio is a convenience. Would you rather drive down a highway congested with billboards, or drive through a beautiful forest or mountain pass, unscathed by the ravages of advertising, but you'll have to pay a monthly toll of 12.95?

Free Radio isn't free. You have to pay with your patience.
