: I scraped my rims on a curb
Gustavus 04-13-2006, 12:21 AM Hello I pulled a great move and scrapped the curb in a drive thru, with my brand new rims. Does anyone know a way to fix them up a little, maybe smooth it out a little? Please help if you can. Thanks Gustavus:mad:

If you've already scrapped them it's too late:D

Yeah if you call around you should be able to find a shop that does this and it seems to be pretty reasonably priced if I remember correctly.
Genom 04-13-2006, 08:37 AM It depends how badly scraped or gouged they are...you may be able to clean them up with a Dremel tool (as I have done in the past for friends).
Or may I suggest a set of curb feelers?:D

Curb feelers? Jeez, I didn't know they still made them. Thought they disappeared with whitewall tires.
I've sanded off scuffed rims before and touched them up with whatever Duplicolor paint (bottle with brush, not spray) is close to the color. Not a perfect solution, but inexpensive and better than the chewed-up rim. Depending on how bad they are, work your way up from about 80 grit wet-dry sandpaper (the dark grey stuff) to about 400 grit and apply just enough paint to cover the damage. Don't recall using primer first, but it's been a while.
Hmmmmm...curb feelers...kind of a retro look...maybe a landau top....
I fit the demographic.

wingdr 04-13-2006, 04:53 PM I have done that in the past. Its one of the reasons that I went with the BFG G-force, they have about a 1/4 inch of rubber that sticks out past the rim edge just for that reason, Tim
M1 1I 1K 1E 04-13-2006, 10:34 PM Luckily my AXIS rims come with a removable lip that way if i ever scrape the curb i can just replace the lip and not the whole wheel! luckily that hasn't happened yet.
AuntDale 04-14-2006, 06:45 AM I am sorry that happened to your rims:sad:
Hope you can have them repaired.
Flattened a tire on a sharp curb at 7-11 several years ago, just brushed it.
Granddad had feelers on his 1947 Studebaker Champion*
Did not know, either, they still made them. He also had a ruby red steering knob and leopard seat covers.
*Disclaimer:Auntie is not that old. Did not see until car was several yrs old:|
TooLowE 05-13-2006, 11:53 PM I'm new to this site, so hopefully this info helps a little...
I work for wheel repair shop that deals with this kind of stuff all day long. Check out our website Fixrim.com
Its all you need!
hardguy 05-14-2006, 02:28 AM Sorry Bro, I love the Axis Hiros you have too. They match you MM E so well. Hopefully you can find a shop near you to get them fixed up. If it happened to me, I don't know what I would do other than probably start crying or something.
How wide are the rims and the tires? Maybe you can go with a little wider tires to protect the rims in the future. I am running 255/45/18 tires on 18"X7.5" wheels and I know I have rubbed the passenger tires against curbs at least a dozen times while parking and luckily have had zero damage to the rims' lip so far. I've even rubbed a street corner curb once from cutting the turn too close. I pull over like half a block down to check for damage expecting the worst but amazingly couldn't find none. I felt so blessed after that. Anyways good luck on the fix and keep us posted.
worktoy 05-18-2006, 12:40 AM Thank goodness you found me. So since I own a company that specializes in restoration in alloy wheels. Lend me your eyes for a second. The best way about doing this is...(now this is a secret in my field) go to a marque dealership. BMW, Benz, Audi, etc. They will point you in the direction of someone in my field. Make sure it's an authorized dealership. Don't be afraid to walk the lot and look at his work on possible used vehicles. There are cheap quality guys with high prices, ask the salemen, or even the manager if the wheel restorator is any good. And let them know how anal you are about your car. And if they are cheap in price don't use them. Expect $125 per wheel. We start at $150 due of my craftsman quality. Good Luck.
PS Don't try this on your own. You can make it worse. Trust me.
ShotOnce 05-18-2006, 10:18 AM What kind of rims? If they are OEM, you can usually find someone that has just upgraded and get them at a pretty reasonable rate. Check the boards and eBay. Like others have said, you can find local shops in your area to grind, smooth and buff your curb rash. It all really depends on how bad it is. Some gouges will never come out.:-(

Actually Shot you can fix anything on a rim. It's endless. The best way to describe this industry is a dentist for your rims. The only warning I have for everyone is...if any company wants to weld or use extreme temperatures like that...remember medal changes after it's been reheated. Creating possible dangers. It changes the struture of the medal and it can cause your wheel to be unsafe. That's just a FYI for everyone.
PS check out our before and after pics on a BMW 330ia on the previous post.

Good to know, although I would think that the cost to mend some of the curb rash I have seen on cars may outweigh the cost of a new rim. Particularly the OEM stuff.
remember medal changes after it's been reheated
I`m more concerned with the spelling of metal:???:

Sorry about my spelling error, hooked on phonics. Even the word changes when it's been reheated. LOL.

Actually Shot, my fellow Frisconian, OEM wheels tend to be very expensive. That's why my company exists. Maybe not Honda, but AMG wheels start at $420 for one. And that's a 17". BMW 745 wheels $800 for one 19". Looks wise these are nothing to write home about. So take care of your stock wheels. If you find these types of wheels somewhere else for cheaper. Well more than likely they're black market, refurbished, or replicas.
I need a spell check where is LMAN at? LOL.
nah, just joking:confused:

I know the European stuff and custom stuff is expensive, but Honda OEM is pretty reasonable.
