I am planning on upgrading the stereo in my 93 accord and I am looking for some kind of alternative to dynamat because I don't want to shell out a couple hundred bucks on the stuff. I did a quick search on yahoo and got a hit on another forum where some guy used some kind of roofing material that looked identical to dynamat and was less than 1/4 of the price! The pics looked good and it can be bought at home depot. Has anyone ever tried this or does anyone think it would work?

That stuff from Home Depot is called Peel & Seal (I think). Some people say it smells, others say it falls off of vertical surfaces when the weather gets hot, and many others say they had great results from it if you prep the surface correctly.
There is a decent comparison of some brands here: http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/
RaamMat looks like a good deal and at one time offered a discount to EOC members.
Personally I'm leaning towards the liquid type that gets painted or sprayed on, like secondskinaudio's Spectrum

I bought FatMat off of eBay. It was $100 for 100 square feet. My floor, doors, and clam shell are stripped right now, but I have not yet put the FatMat on so I couldn't tell you how good it is.

What would be the proper prep for applying it to vertical surfaces?

Here's a forum discussion about it on a car stero site:

Basically use a slovent type cleaner like alcohol or windex. They also warn about the sharp edges of the foil layer.
Another E owner mentions peel-n-seal here:

I like this site for info too
