Forgive my noobishness in the NAV area, but is there some type of nav unit, like a handheld unit maybe, but not necessarily, that can output video to go to another screen? like to display on a big monitor or something?

sorry, i am totally green in different types of nav setups...

edit: and not a computer, I mean like an off the shelf unit that just has the option to output to video

I have a hand held Garmin unit that has a pigtail to plug into a laptop.

plugs into the laptop how?

I essentially would want to get a nav unit that I can just use the video input on my video capable, but not nav capable headunit.

It's for downloading data from the hand held to the laptop, or vice versa.

The Garmin units plug into a lap top via the USB port. The laptop can display your currant location on the Map software provided with the unit. You can use the laptop to do real time editing of your route. I use mine wile my wife is driving to find Gas stations, Hotels, or points of interest. Then down load the instructions to the Gps.

It's Easy

If you get either the Alpine IVA-D100 or the IVA-W200, which are both in dash DVD units the main difference is that the D100 is a flip out vs the W200 which is a double din unit. You can then also purchase the new Blackbird nav system from Alpine, which is very cool because it's a handheld GPS just like any other GPS, but the difference is you can hook it up to either of these HU and now you have the ability to use the larger screen, but then remove it and take it with you anywhere you go. Hope that helps.

^^kind of like that elementx, but not manufacturer dependant. I'd want to be able to hook it up to my tv if I wanted.

Planning on taking your TV out and about?

I know what you are asking, but I don't think it is a feature many manufactures are looking to put out. If I am reading you correctly, you want a standard Video out for a GPS unit. I don't know how big of a selling point that would be to people, considering there are head units that have navigation systems built in and people hiking in the back woods have very little need of a TV. Keep looking, they seem to be making everything now-a-days. Good Luck.
