GT500 will not be released until later this month, but dealers pre-selling cars on the Internet get high prices.

Ford hasn't yet announced the price of the 2007 Shelby Cobra GT500. But, whatever it is, buyers have already indicated a willingness to pay at least $20,000 more.

The Shelby Cobra GT500 is a version of the popular Ford Mustang equipped with a 500-horsepower supercharged V-8 engine. The original Shelby GT500s, made in the late 1960s by race driver turned sports car maker Carroll Shelby, are now highly coveted collectibles that can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. (Far fewer of those cars were built than the approximately 8,000 per year a Ford spokesman says will be made of the new version.)

On eBayMotors.com, one Texas dealership is advertising a 2007 Shelby GT500 with a "Buy it now" price of $99,999. So far, no-one's paid that much, but bids in that auction were already over $65,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.

The first 2007 Shelby GT500s are expected to arrive in dealerships at the end of May with most dealerships getting just one or two to sell.

Ford's sticker price for the car is expected to be about $40,000. Some dealers advertising on eBayMotors are asking for bids in terms of the amount over the sticker price the buyer would agree to pay.

Currently, bidders are offering to pay $20,000 or more over the car's sticker price.

Shortly after the GT500 was unveiled in April, 2005, an interested buyer went into Corey's Northgate Ford in Binghamton, N.Y. with a check for $1,000 for the right to buy a GT500 for sticker price whenever the car became available, said Scott Prancue, the dealership's general manager.

"Thank God I didn't take it," he said. "I would have been fired."

In early May, Prancue's dealership accepted a bid of $13,000 for the right to buy one of the cars at its full sticker price. Had the auction been held today, the price would almost certainly have been higher.

Buyers who are willing to pay $20,000 or more for the car are trying to get the first ones produced as those are always the most desirable, said John Aguire, Ford's brand manager for the GT500. While Ford sets suggested retail prices for its cars, the manufacturer cannot ultimately control the amount dealers will sell them for, he pointed out.

"I'm not surprised at how high demand has been," he said.

Dealers who are auctioning the rights to buy the cars are just trying to get a fair market value for them, said Prancue.

While it's not unusual for certain trendy cars to sell at prices higher than the manufacturer's suggested retail price, the amounts over the sticker price are usually a few thousand dollars at most. There have been cars that have regularly sold for tens of thousands of dollars over their suggested retail price, but those have been exotic cars with prices well over $100,000 to begin with.

Ownership of the the first 2007 Ford Shelby Cobra GT500 available for sale was purchased for $600,000 at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. in January. Proceeds from that sale went to charity.

The GT500 benefits from its relationship to the original, highly collectible Shelby cars as well as to the current Mustang, which has turned out to be a hit for Ford in its own right.

Still, actual selling prices will eventually come down to something at least closer to the sticker price, said Jim Hossack, of the automotive industry consulting firm AutoPacific.

"It's a handful of people willing to pay that much," he said.

Granted $20k over sticker is a bit much, but if you look at the price of classic Shelby Mustangs, then this may be a wise investment. Right now it is tough to determine whether or not you should blow your wad on a Shelby because we don't know what the production numbers are. If I had the money, I would pick one up, drain the fluids and shelf the vehicle for the next 30 years. Granted it isn't a '67 GT500 Shelby convertible who's pricetag hovers around $250,000.

Remember, Mustang owners are more fanatical than E owners.

I've owned a couple nice ones, and my dad had a 64 1/2 when I was 5. I would love to buy one of these but I have no need for that much power. I have a feeling it's going to be stolen a lot too.

I have a feeling it's going to be stolen a lot too.

I have a 66 in various stages of repair and love it. I love getting behind the wheel and driving it like it was stolen. The E can't compare on fun factor. Like I said, I would have to own a new Shelby, but I just don't have the money for one.

Mr Tango and I have been over to the shop here in Dallas where they are building the new Carroll Shelby "Eleanors". Anybody seen those? WOW! And the price tag, well WAY outta my league until I hit the lottery or have money to burn.
I am a Mustang Fan from way back, have owned two - my 1st car was a red 67 'Stang. It had NO power anything, no air (in 100+ summer OKLA) and a 6 cyl that ATE alternators but I dearly LOVED that car!
One of the highlights of my LIFE was when I got to meet and talk to Carroll Shelby at a SCCA Trans Am race in Phoenix a few years ago. I sat at a table at Mr Tangos co hospitality tent trailer (they had a team) with Carroll Shelby and Paul Newman (PN was waiting on his massage therapist to arrive) and talked about Mustangs and Cobras. Wow - it was hard to not feel terribly intimidated....but I did manage to maintain composure. They were BOTH very nice to me. I had met PN before that - he always got his massages at Hubby's Race Team Trailer cuz it was big and private. He LOVES racing and does not act the "star" at all at the races at all. He says when he is racing he is just another driver, not a star.
Anyway - Carroll Shelby is truly "the man" when it comes to the Mustang. Too bad Ford forgot that for too many years.

I'll be honest, I am not a big fan of the Eleanor Mustang. Not that I would turn one down if I happened to have an opportunity and money to buy one. I like the lines of the untainted but modified fastbacks. Oh well...

A car like that is a beauty. I need to hit the lottery...

I would love to have one of the new GT500s. If I had the money I would be more than willing to pay the extra 20,000. There aren't many out there and I am sure people will be more than willing to pay it without thinking twice. Because of the high markup though, I am willing to bet you will see a lot of older people driving them because the 20,000 has pushed an already expensive car completely out of reach for the average young person (like me)

You can buy a vett for that much or send a stock GT to some where to get it "tuned up". 20k over sticker takes the car out of most of the E owners range. :)

Heck, a 65K 500HP Z06 Corvette can be had for less than $5,000 over MSRP and there's a 1-2 year waiting list for them.. I'd take the Z06 Vette over the Shelby Mustang any day. $20,000 over MSRP for a Mustang? LOL! Ford dealers must be out of thier frikkin minds.

I totally agree. More accurately Ford buyers are out of their minds and cash. :) I can say this because I was a Ford faithful. Ford does have a very strong following of devoted buyers though. Including my boss that is ready to sign on one of these mustangs tomorrow even at 20k above sticker.
