I wanted to post to ask some advice from those more experienced than myself.

I want to get a single 10" sub to put in a sealed box in the trunk area at first, but at some point would like to fashion a fake stealthbox so the "sag*" needs to be acceptable, and I think I might have the box downfire during it's stay in the trunk area also.

The sub will be hooked up to a mono alpine MRD-M605 (400w rms @4, 600 @2) Crutchfield link to amp specs (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-ID2EWEVF8da/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?search=m605&i=500MRDM605)

I wanted to originally get a 10 dvc infinity kappa perfect, but it seems like those are getting discontinued or something?? They can still be found, but it got me thinking that maybe I'm limiting myself.

Anyways, never one to be closed minded, I wanted to hear if anyone had some suggestions for nice subs that I've never had experience with, like mb quart or boston or something... any suggestions will be considered.

Thanks all.

there used to be a handy online Sag calculator, but apparently it went offline

Do you want clarity of thump or just raw bass? Everyone will have particular sub favorites, but some of the best 10's that I have heard at Rockford Fosgates.

Crutchfield does a great breakdown of specs per sub so check that out.

I'm more looking for sq, but I need thump, but probably any quality sq sub will give me what I'm looking for in terms of thump, i'm not trying to win any dB competition or anything.

I don't really like using crutchfield as a reference because they don't carry a lot of brands, but you're right, they are good for comparing specs of subs they do carry.

I'm running a Phoenix Gold Tantrum in my E. I moved them from my Grand Cherokee when I traded it in.

They're extremely precise subs, great if you're looking for quality bass. The nice thing is they also have a pretty high RMS so if you want to blast the crap out of them you just hook up a larger amp.

My setup uses a 12" sub in a sealed box with 300W Phoenix Gold Tantrum amp and it is PLENTY loud. They don't make the Tantrum series anymore but you can pick them up all over the internet and eBay.

For my money, I would buy Phoenix Gold all day long. Infinity does not make very good subs, Rockford are pretty good for the money. Whatever you do, don't buy Sony.

Image Dynamic subs have my vote. They are an excellent SQ sub that are used in a lot of competition cars. They will handle the power and not cost an arm and a leg. I have one IDQ12/D2V2 in a sealed box going in my E that is left over from my Civic. Its very clean and tight, but can also hit hard. Another great thing is they dont require lots of air space. I think my box is in the .85 range. You can find ID subs at the link below.

All nice wooofers, and all might work in a small sealed box, but nobody has addressed the issue of sag, which is all important here.

bonanz, what about using the JL driver that they use in their Stealthbox? That one has to work well when mounted vertically.

Otherwise, I think you are going to have to spend an evening working out the numbers for all of the usual suspects: Infinity, Alpine, P.Gold, Rockford, Kicker, Image Dynamics, Elemental Designs, etc. etc. etc.

I wouldn't let the fact the Infinity is being discontinuted throw you off it. I mean, what is really new under the sun when it comes to subwoofers? As long as it likes a small sealed box and doesn't sag more than 5% of its throw, I think most any good woofer would do. Hell, they're all probably made in the same shop in China anyway (what, me, a cynic? :D ).

Speaking of sag, don't get me started about Xmax. We really need a new measure of excursion. Drivers today can often move a lot further than electrically they should. Xmax is a measure of how far a driver can move and still have the voice coil fully in the gap. Drivers today can move more than that. They won't be as tight but they'll still put out bass. We should have a new definition of excursion that accounts for the total movement of the driver, not just when it's tight and snappy. I mean, isn't a little sloppy at really high volumes acceptable? At that point what you want is SPL, not articulation.

I don't see any way around spending a long evening running the Thiele/Small parameters and figuring out the sag for a bunch of woofers.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I didn't necessarily want anyone to calculate the sag of a sub they were suggesting (although feel free if you are so inclined :) ) but I was more looking for suggestions. Then I would whip up a spreadsheet and, like Gregg said, spend an evening calculating and whittling down suggestions.

I'm not really excited about the jl sub that comes in the stealthbox, otherwise I would just buy one straight up. I'm not sure of my reasoning, but I am just not interested in that sub... :-?

I guess I was just kinda looking for suggestions on a quality 10 that can work in a small sealed box, I'll calculate the sag to see if it'll work. I just wanted to hear some opinions on lesser-known but good quality subs I was probably overlooking.

Of the ones I have familiarity with, the Alpine Type R or the new Kicker CV-X would both like small sealed boxes. The Kicker also should have bodacious power handling capability. It uses the L7 motor in a round, instead of square, sub, and for about half the price of a L7. :D

I was checking out the elemental designs ov.2's, and they look very nice and seem to get favorable reviews everywhere, I hope they pass the sag test :) because after checking around a bit, I think I'm leaning in this direction.

the 11Ov.2 is the 10 right? lol they have a weird naming convention.

edit: they pass :)

Oooh, go with this, bonanz. I'd love to hear what you think of this woofer. I like the idea of a woofer from Iowa. They are only 2-3 hours away from me.

Agreed, I've heard nothing but very good things about their products.

You're the boss:razz: I'm going to call them up tomorrow and see if I can get one of those b-stock deals or something

In your living room? You can't at least put it in the closet? lol I will definitely let everyone know what I think.
