spdrcr5 06-07-2006, 03:13 PM I'm coming back from Cali that weekend. :( can't be there.
Uncle MIke 06-07-2006, 09:25 PM Densie and I just had an offer accepted on a house.....WooHooo!!.....and are in the process of selling our condo. A very busy time for us but we will still do our best to make it.
Any maps of the campground or Loop 7?
cai88 06-07-2006, 09:43 PM Nice Mike! you better be there though or we will hunt you down!!!!
here is Loop 7
Uncle MIke 06-07-2006, 10:40 PM Nice Map Carly!
Where are the crazy people bunkering down?......Lots of options here!:-)
jurneez 06-08-2006, 06:11 AM Congrats Mike & Denise but that's not good enough to get out of coming....:D
back on the other thread Carly suggests the inside sites in the loop as parts of the outside could get wet.
And Bald Eagle suggested you reserve now - you can always get your money back, except for $9. but at least you'll be next the the EOC'ers.
We aren't sure who slipped into "our" area on one of the sites.
Makes your ressies now!
Where's the house?
Near and salsa or hot sauce factories?

Excellent! Also got a pm from jesbecause that they were trying to reserve a site. Always good to see new faces. There were several at the Spring Meet and we think they're coming back. In spite of talk about Misfits, pole dancing and "T", it's not nearly as raucous a group as it appears on line.
Plus, you get to see the 8th (maybe 10th or 11th) Wonder of the World...RamblerDan's acutely modified Element.
PS- Sent out over 125 PMs and e-mails, so we should see some new faces in August!

cai88 06-08-2006, 12:59 PM If you have never camped before and want to try it I know there are some of us who have extra gear. Just throw a post in here somewhere and we will see what we can do.
cai88 06-08-2006, 07:34 PM Started a site so all the info is in one spot: http://www.pnltybx88.com/element/BugandHumidityII/Northeasthome.htm

Great job Carly, can you add a button for info or concept of the weekend, like the communal dinner Saturday night, or visiters can just do Sunday, etc etc if there is anything else pertaining to the agenda, how about hubhuss sp,?(Harry) he might have music for one night. We can bribe him, he's easy going.:)

cai88 06-08-2006, 07:48 PM Yep working on all of that. I'll have it done by the end of the weekend.

Thanks! (blush), but the cut and paste wouldn't really fit in Carly's layout.

cai88 06-08-2006, 08:03 PM I plan on fitting everything Bald Eagle wrote onto the site. I couldn't really get all those colors to mesh right on a whole site. Was home sick today so for awhile I sat here and totally over thought how I wanted it to look. Then I just went with a simple design. Used a black background because it was easier to make things stand out.

Wouldn't it be great to attach black or grey panels all over the chevy at night and square it off. :D
I'll chip in towards community site. Mike this time I will, last time I forget to track you and or UM to discuss $$$.

hmbhuss1 06-09-2006, 09:13 AM Tami and I just reserved 198 for Friday and Saturday nights. I tried for 195 but my transaction didn't go through due to my not putting in a 4 digit year on my expiration date. You'd think they could have an error page which would allow you to go back and fix something but, no, the whole thing just disappears into the ether...
Sorry, I'm rambling. Anyway, we're looking forward to it, I'm bringing the guitar, get your requests in. I'm working on the Buffett for Uncle Mike! Great site, Carly, thanks a lot!
ramblerdan 06-09-2006, 10:09 AM I'll chip in for a common site. Did someone lay out funds for the group on the last trip? B.E. Mike or U. Mike, let me know and I'll kick in for that too.
I'm bringing the guitar, get your requests in.
Aiko Aiko?
Bald Eagle 06-09-2006, 01:58 PM Common Site Is Booked!
I just reserved 212 for Fri/Sat, so either 190 or 212 can be the common site. Will accept any contributions to defray the $45 fee when we all get together.

Aiko Aiko it is! That's one I've actually played before...
I'll chip in for the group site, too.
Uncle MIke 06-09-2006, 07:47 PM Just curious what the significance of "Inside Loop 7" is?
Are the other sites sold out? Are these sites blocked for us or is this simply a way to have us closer together?
The reason I'm asking is that I noticed Dan, Carly & Jurn are in the Outside Loop.....Wassupp wit dat? Is that a designated area for MISFITS?
cai88 06-09-2006, 07:49 PM I'm requesting Johnny Cash-Ring of Fire:cool:

In post #67 and 70 there's information regarding wet sites and vinnie.
In the beginning.....way early thread, Carly and Gail decided that the outside of loop could get wet if we had rainy weather, however, the last few sites where you see Paul, Gail, and I are because Carley and Gail stated they were the higher dry ones on the outside loop. Inside loop is all dry.
Original reasons:
1. to keep Vinnie isolated as he's still limping and healing.
2. Carly, Gail and I are staying until Monday so we grouped.
The entire inside loop is dry as I understand it. Sites are filling fast.
ATT Carly - Mysticfalcon is on site 199.
can't wait...

Yeah...seemed strange to me too. "Hey,everybody...sign up for sites inside the loop!" So I reserve a spot in the "designated zone" and find out that everyboy else is booking outside the loop. Talked to my therapist and he said not to worry about it. We had a long discussion about being "inside the loop" vs. "out of the loop" and decided that inside the loop is better.
Hey Mike, 195 is in the middle of the pack and still available (I think). Harry had a data entry problem trying to reserve 195 and moved on to a different site.

Tonight when I spoke with customer service they said 195 was taken, drats, watch it be a computer glitch and it was really available. I was calling for someone else. So if 195 is open again, grab it quick....
Hey guys, it was just the last few sites on the outside loop was dry and it kept us across from each other. I just did what I was told, inside the loop, outside the loop, who cares, just think inside the box!:)
jurn
jurneez 06-10-2006, 05:23 AM I couldn;t sleep in on a Saturday, guess I'm use to getting up at 5:30 a.m. every day.....so here's a map with names, just killing time.
jurn
Catskills Grrl 06-10-2006, 08:16 AM I live a stone's throw from Haines Falls and I would like to think that my suggestion of Haines Falls to cai88 helped plan this! I finally, finally got the horrible noise from my windshield fixed ... although I don't want to JINX!
Hopefully I will have some mods by then ....
cai88 06-10-2006, 10:28 AM Your suggestion helped alot. That area just has so much to do. Maybe you can keep us updated on the road construction on 23a. We had to take a detour that set us off course an hour and a half.
Don't know what happened with inside the Loop...lol Oh well..for now let's just try to fill the rest of Loop 7. I just don't want anyone to get a soggy campsite.
Uncle MIke 06-10-2006, 11:33 AM Just booked site #205 for Saturday & Sunday!:)
Jurn...No offense taken regarding inside/outside of the loop. We will be happy with the common folks in our own little segregated area....JUST KIDDING!!....really....just bustin' ya!;-)
Nice job Carly, Jurn, Bald Eagle, Gail, Catskills Grrl and anyone else who has played a role in putting this together. We are looking forward to it!
How about a theme for our Saturday night campfire party with Harry?
Since Harry was kind enough to say he'll try and learn a Jimmy Buffet song and is going to play: Iko Iko.....How about if we all wear Hawaiian Shirts? I've got some festive hats and leis from my dj props, as well as a limbo pole, some grass skirts (one in your size Bald Eagle!) coconut bras, etc. Can you imagine the great photos and belly laughs we'll have in this attire?....plus we'll be one heck of a fun audience for Harry!:-D
Anyone second this idea?
How about some tropical sing-A-long requests for Harry?
Day-o.................Harry Belafonte
Kokomo..............The Beach Boys
Margaritaville.......Jimmy Buffet (for all of the "T" drinkers!)
ps--We will pitch in on the community site. I say that everyone simply divide $45.00 by the number of EOC sites rented and give that amount to Bald Eagle so he dosn't pay more than his share.
Bald Eagle 06-10-2006, 12:06 PM ...I've got some festive hats and leis from my dj props, as well as a limbo pole, some grass skirts (one in your size Bald Eagle!) coconut bras, etc.
Eagles don't wear grass skirts. Not dignified enough. Besides, they inhibit soaring.
Can you imagine the great photos and belly laughs we'll have in this attire?....plus we'll be one heck of a fun audience for Harry!
...and we oughta be able to drive the guy with the Chevy out of Space #215 by about 9 p.m. on Friday night.

jurneez 06-10-2006, 12:19 PM Watch out Mike, Bald Eagle will ask to have you pay his taxes next! He tried that in the spring.......wirey he is.....:D
The whole Hawaiian thing flies with me.
The gadgits, well, don't mention the pole to some people:-P
Although I don't know about the coconut bra thing, I'd hold judgement on that.
Thanks Catskill Grrl for the input to Carly. Are you coming? Maybe I missed this info somewhere?
Hey Carly, Hope you don't mind I threw in your camp map with names. Darn, I just couldn't sleep, man I hate that when that happens, especially when Vinnie is snoring away.

I hope Space #195 is an EOC member, not another cretin with a Chevy pickup.
Watch out Mike, Bald Eagle will ask to have you pay his taxes next! He tried that in the spring.......wirey he is....
Yeah, but it didn't do me any good. Had to pay them myself. As a retiree, living on a fixed income, huddled in a cold, dark room, eating cat food to survive, I do what I can to pick up an extra buck here and there...unless it involves wearing a grass skirt.

Uncle MIke 06-10-2006, 12:42 PM Eagles don't wear grass skirts. Not dignified enough. Besides, they inhibit soaring.
No problem Mike.......then you will have the honor of wearing the coconut bra, floral leis and tropical hat with a matching band and going over and introducing yourself on behalf of the group, to the truckdrivers on sites 195 and 215!
jurneez 06-10-2006, 01:16 PM Oh great - this will really look good to the west coast.
Guys running around in coconut bras and grass skirts trying to pick up the "pick up" guys.....jeeeez, could it get any weirder, wait don't answer because I know the answer's yes.
Actually, it'll probably attract some.
Bald Eagle As for retired and eating cat food in the cold corners, well, you could try tuna fish, or dog food. We don't feel too bad for ya, can ya tell?;-)
Now, let's see, I need to go off and design a costume.
Not likely to be explosive and wild with me. Those days are over.
in a while,
And by the way, I thought, we actually don't don't know who is on either of those sites yet, but there's prob some E people who haven't told us where they are. i.e. robertkeirstead and jesbecause.....they're probably sitting back laughing their butts off seeing us on line worried about chevy's...:D
jurn
robertkeirstead 06-10-2006, 01:30 PM Hi:
Karen and I never made it to Haines Falls last weekend because the road from the Northeast 23a ( I think ) is closed about 5 miles from Haines Falls. After searching for some help at a small variety store... the locals basically said you can't get there from here. Actually the detour was a 90 min side trip so we headed back north.
For the Summer Meet... is there an alternative route... so we can get there in a reasonable time..?
Thanks
Bob & Karen
Uncle MIke 06-10-2006, 01:40 PM Oh great - this will really look good to the west coast.

I need Bald Eagles witty, literary expertise to come up with a name for this spectacle which could serve as one of the campfire highlights!:-P
cai88 06-10-2006, 01:48 PM Bob and Karen, I'm pretty sure we saw you on the way out. We really couldn't get around the 90 minute detour but that should be taken care of by August. Hopefully, Catskills Girl can give us a road update.
I'm all for a Hawaiian theme Mike!! Great Idea!! Rick would be happy to wear a coconut bra:-D
robertkeirstead 06-10-2006, 02:14 PM Hi:
You should have launched some surface to air missles... and we would have stopped... it had been a long weekend in the rain in the Berkshires... and we were running out of dry sox if you know the feeling... Sorry we missed you.... I am going to book a site... now...

Great idea! I've always wanted to learn that. I think you mentioned it at Tentback.
Uncle Mike: I'll bring some shakers and stuff for everyone to play along. Everybody should sing, too. And if anybody else plays something, bring it along!
I just checked ReserveAmerica site for 195's availability and it's still showing as unavailable. Maybe this is their way of keeping the place from getting too crowded. As transactions fail, those campsites remain open. What a wacky way of going about things. Sounds like something I would program...:|

ramblerdan 06-13-2006, 09:38 AM Anybody smoke cigars ? And what's your brand ?
I'm in for cigars around the fire as long as we can keep downwind of the non-smokers. I generally smoke Ashtons.

Damn, another reason not to come.
My wife quit smoking about a year and a half ago (third attempt in a 45 year smoking career). We were over at a friend's house several months ago and he lit up one of his Cuban cigars. Pamela went absolutely freaking crack-addict nuts. Couldn't get enough of it. It was embarrassing. Closest we've come to divorce since the "kitchen tile selecting incident" in 1984.

Wow! Fourteen sites reserved and it's only mid-June. That means we have spaces (so far) for twenty-eight Elements.
If you're thinking about coming for the day, looks like we'll have plenty of room.

yes, I hear they are directionally navigatable. Complete ability to float and assume a direction. Good luck, over on the outside loop.
Seriously, in August it should be dry enough but there was an honest mention of the outside loop being wet during really bad weather but .......not in dry August.
Don't worry, we'll make the fire bigger.

peruytu 06-15-2006, 12:21 AM Any room left?
Is there a place for off-roading? I live near NYC so its kinda hard to find some places for that aorund here. Also, if I do decide to make it, this would be my first time i've ever been camping, so i'm wondering if people are allowed to drink, just in case I find camping boring. ;)
I'd like to go but it all depends if my girlfriend can go with me. I know she would want to go anywhere I want to go, its just a matter of if she can or not.
How many spots left?
cai88 06-15-2006, 09:42 AM We have tons of room left and Jurneez posted a map of the available sites. You can drink while camping(See Tentback Mt Thread)
As far as off-roading in the area not sure about with our cars. I don't think you would really wanna offroad in the E. You can rent 4 wheelers right across the street from the campsite.

Thumbs up for drinking :) (i'm not a crazy alcoholic just in case you were thinking that).
I should've said "light off-roading" just to feel the 4 wheels going at the same time. This is my first 4WD car so I want to feel it going.
But anyways, i'm ready to make the reservation... my girlfriend is very excited. So what exactly do I need to do to make the reservations? I see the number to call but what "spot" do I reserve? Which ones are still open? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, either through here or PM. Thanks.
By the way, what are the possibilities of fellow EOC members helping me installing some mods like racks, grills and side steps while there? :) I'm not a big handy type of guys, that means I dont own any tools. I would love to learn from the masters, while doing hands on training.
jurneez 06-16-2006, 10:34 AM This was in your pm but you might need to check online with Reserve America again. I think 201 and 203 were still open but I was in a rush so check again....

You should call asap. Sites are filing fast and we're trying to keep the E folks all together. Also you can always get your money back, except for $9. and that's worth it to hold the site.
Costs - $19 Friday, $18 Saturday and a $9. state reg fee. All refundable except the 9 if you cancel.
Total $45 for two nights.
Call or go line to Reserve America, New Youk state, North-South Campground, loop 7
All these sites looked empty at 7:41a.m. this morning (yesterday).
Hope you can make it and for first time campers make a post saying that and you'll get people offering their extra gear, air matress, whatever. I sleep in the E but they are really good about sharing whatever thay have extra.
cya there I hope,

There might be some others staying but I'm not sure who they are.

Seems like there are only two spots left inside the loop 201 and 203. Hmm, next to Uncle Mike or jstatik ... decisions decisions... hmm ok which one of you two is a drinker? :D
EDIT: Ok to make it easy on Uncle Mike and jstatik, let me just give you a brief description of ourselves:
I'm a computer (31) guy and my girlfriend, Renee (21), is politics major at Salve Regina University in RI, and I don't think we're THAT rowdy.
Ok who wants to adopt us? :)
Oh btw, we're not staying until MOnday, we have to leave Sunday night because Renee has to go back to school and prepare for her hockey season (yeah, she plays hockey but we BOTH LOVE soccer).
jstatik 06-16-2006, 02:23 PM Well i cant answer for Uncle Mike, but my wife and I are not drinkers. We like to watch the drunks, uh, I mean, other party people, uh, adults attending the event consume adult beverages.:D
ds97a 06-16-2006, 03:51 PM And where the heck is Ds97a???? I'll hunt you down Dan!! Remember we're neighbors.
Sorry to be out of the loop folks. Work has been, well, ummm... OBNOXIOUS! The good news is that I have been able to spend a lot of time in my Element as I traverse the state putting out computer fires and creating new ones.
Looks like (at the moment) I won't be able to join y'all  We have discovered a bit of a conflict between mine and the missus' schedule. The good news is though, if by some miracle, it becomes resolved, the Catskill's are pretty close.
So, regardless, HAVE fun and I'll be thinking of you!

Uncle MIke 06-16-2006, 04:07 PM I booked our site for Saturday & Sunday in the hope that Denise can get Monday off from work. We'll be there Saturday for sure and with any luck...Sunday night too....so I can see what certain members are up to over on that Outside Loop!:-o
Hello Peruytu,
Denise and I are social/party drinkers and act respectably on most occasions....but don't take my word for it let the Tentback pictures speak for themselves! We like to have fun, are not too "rowdy" (except when in the company of MISFITS) and are considerate of others when they are sleeping.
You are welcome to set up camp next to us!:)

Outstanding! By my count that means we have 16 sites reserved...peruytu will make 17... and we will have filled the inner loop! That means, including day visitors, we have room for 34 Elements...our biggest meet yet.
Next block of sites to book...211 to 197 on the top of the loop?
1702
jurneez 06-17-2006, 03:34 PM Bald Eagle - I'm not sure about that count, I get 14 plus the parking/picnic site you rented, making rented total of 15.
Am I missing someone? I didn't add in day visitors on the map, and I do think the next sites, as you said, Bald Eagle, should start at 211 and work around. Let me know about the numbers though.
Thanks,

I think I included the mythological Chevy owner in 215. At this point he has no choice but to join us. :) Also included the community site. This is the same way the gummint does statistics, isn't it?

We'll take car of squaring off his chevy. Maybe it could us some black panels.
I think this is certainly the biggest meet. Hope everyone shows up. Saturday night - is it a communal suppah like last time. I know the Sunday lunch at the provillion is the really group thing, but are we eating togther Sat night too?
just curious. Well, I'm off to find flamimgo's that serve coffee in the morning.

The Community supper was a lot of fun at Tentback Mtn. I was thinking of bringing shrimp kabobs this time. Do we have a head count for people attending Sat night?
I don't think I caught the bit about AM breakfast but, I bet if we look, we could find an E powered coffee pot. I'll begin looking!

Mmmmm, shrimp kabobs!
Probably need to wait until early August for a realistic head count. We also need a "plan" for the community meal. How about breaking it up into four catagories: 1.) hor's d'oeuvres/munchies, 2.) main dishes, 3.) side dishes, & 4.) desserts. Then divide the head count by 4 and have people sign up for a catagory? If we have 32 people coming, then we need 8 volunteers for each catagory and they would bring enough food for just 4 people. Need some menu planning/coordination within each group so we don't end up with 4 hot dogs, 4 hamburgers, 4 pieces of chicken, 4 bowls of chili, 4 ribs, 4 kebobs, 4 fish tacos, 4 filet mignon and a food fight over who gets what. Probably could lighten up on the munchies and dessert catagories and add to the main dish/side dish catagories. It's not like I've been thinking about this or anything.
Or we could....????

Sorry for not replying more often. I've been very busy with school, work and my girlfriend nose surgery (for deviated septum, i dont know if should be telling you that but whatever lol i'm sure she wont mind).

Uncle MIke 06-29-2006, 07:16 AM What a great turnout....the map is quite impressive!:)
Has anyone from MA or northern CT tried to find out directions to this place yet? I doubt that Mapquest will list any road closures and I'm concerned about having the same experience that one of our members had when you guys were checking out the site some weeks back.
I read somwhere on-line that Rt.28 A (?), is going to be closed for much of the 2006 summer due to "many different projects" that have been scheduled. Now there is the washout of the road due that Carly mentioned was on the news.
Anyone know the answer to: '
How do yah get they-ahh from he-yahh?"
My worst nightmare is to drive a considerable distance with a fully packed E....get to where I think I'm supposed to go and be told that: "Sorry, Yah can't get they-ahh from he-yahh!" I AM the "typical" guy in these situations and it ISN'T pretty. It takes a lot for me to ask directions in the first place (I'm cursed with that "gene"), and when I do and get an answer like that.......it's just downright ugly! I better pack the limbo pole first so I can't just grab it and start whacking it against something or someone!
cai88 06-29-2006, 07:40 AM Guys I will drive down there in early August and check things out. I can get some alternate routes from the campsite.

Hey Mike, I'm like you, Oh God, did I just say that, I'm nothing like you:D , but I do like to ponder at great length the trip roads I will take. For various reasons, I might want to wander off the path for an extra stop, or I may visit a friend nearby, anywho, just because of my normal or not so normal heebie jeebies about driving in unknown territory, I prefer to study well ahead of time the maps.
I sent Carly, just this morning two maps, detailed, of the area, especially the detour area. I read yesterday, the road construction wouldn't be done by August, not sure if that's accurate or not.
So, I sent maps to Carly, because I'm not familar with the area.
So, if you discover any great insights to the roadways, please let me know as well. Carly won't let us down, she'll send info for sure.
Let's hope the flamingos can get there.
I'm sending mine ahead with gear!

Carly: The tent you loaned me was quick and easy but I should have looked at the new one you have which you mentioned was "ridiculously" fast & easy to set up. What brand and model of tent is that? Any links?
Please let us know what you decided on. I'm also doing some research and I find something good, i'll let you know.
So please keep us posted.
Oh and I have one thing to say about directions : GPS! :)
ramblerdan 06-29-2006, 12:38 PM A GPS-based nav system might tell you a road is closed and show the detour or alternate, but alas, my GPS will only take me to where the bridge used to be before it washed out. There's no substitute for a human agent on the scene.

Good point... can you tell i've never been out to the woods? ;)
Anyhow, Overstock.com is running a 15% off on everything (but only for new customers). So I was able to get a knife, a big flashlight, and air mattress... and i'm waiting for mid August to purchase the tent since camping season will be winding down and hopefully tents will go on sale. So, what else do I need? Remember, first time camper here. :) Thanks!

peruytu 06-29-2006, 03:31 PM Dan,
I see in your signature that you have a Garmin GPS. I just bought a Garmin c320. It's a great little machine, but i'm having problems figuring out how i'm going to mount the thing. I can't put it directly on the windshield because its too far and the sun glare will be all over it. I've been thinking of putting right on top of the plastic bezel thats right above the radio. But i'm not sure exactly how to do it. I would greatly appreciate any help in regards to this. thanks.
Uncle MIke 06-29-2006, 08:05 PM Hello Peruytu,
Looks like you and I will be neighbors on this meet!:)
I'll keep you posted on what tent we end up buying.

Hey Peruytu, Mysticfalcon mounted his above the radio I think. He's coming to the meet so you can gets first hand look, if you can wait.

Hey Uncle Mike! I can't wait to see you and everybody else there at the meet.. it's going to be a great time! (I hope! This will be the first time camping, lets hope I like it, but even if I don't at least I can say I did it!) Anyways, I hope to share a couple of beers with you and the rest of the gang.
Yes, please keep me posted about that tent... like I said in my previous post, i'm probably going to wait until August to purchase one since the camping season will be winding down. But in the meantime i'm doing my research as to which brands are the best ones.

Thanks Jurneez! I'm hoping a few people have GPS mounted in their cars so I can get an idea on how to do it myself. I hope Dan can show me also.
mysticfalcon 06-30-2006, 03:44 AM Mines just suction cuped to the windshield right over the radio. Sun glare isnt an issue and keeping it that far forward keeps me from playing with it on the road which could be hazardous. I do plan to make a mount to the left of the radio to get it a little closer but just havent had the time.
Catskills Grrl 06-30-2006, 06:19 AM Your suggestion helped alot. That area just has so much to do. Maybe you can keep us updated on the road construction on 23a. We had to take a detour that set us off course an hour and a half.
The work on the Clove Road only lasted 6 weeks and reopened after Memorial Day ... until the rains. Last weeks rains closed 23A again ... and now they are saying "indefinitely". I would bet it will be opened by August, though. I will keep you posted.
cai88 06-30-2006, 08:58 AM Thanks so much for the road update!! Are you coming to the meet?
hmbhuss1 06-30-2006, 12:50 PM So I was able to get a knife, a big flashlight, and air mattress... and i'm waiting for mid August to purchase the tent since camping season will be winding down and hopefully tents will go on sale. So, what else do I need? Remember, first time camper here. :) Thanks!
As long as you keep the knife away from the air mattress, you should be good...
Catskills Grrl 06-30-2006, 07:59 PM I am in Palenville today, and according to the locals, Rt. 23A from Palenville to Haines Falls, the Clove Road, will be closed for months. They are planning to open a single lane in a few weeks in order to accomodate medical emergencies on the mountain top, but beyond that they don't know when it will reopen.
Locals are using Platte Clove Road, but it is feared that the rains have weakened the road surface there, too, and since Platte Clove is a seasonal road to begin with, and almost a single lane in some places, authorities are NOT encouraging increased traffic on that road.
Haines Falls is accessible, just not from the east.
I will post more as soon as I hear.
Gail (Catskills Grrl)
Uncle MIke 07-01-2006, 01:47 AM Thanks for the update Gail!
I'm glad the meet isn't till August because things sound a little bleak.:|
Catskills Grrl 07-01-2006, 06:23 AM Well, be prepared for the road to still be closed by the time of the meet. They are predicting months, and I don't think they mean less than two.

Does anyone know what the alternative route would be from my neck of the woods? (Massachesetts/Connecticut border or from the Sturbridge/Worcester area)
I find the thought of a 75 mile detour very unattractive and am just wondering what other options there will be instead of Rt. 23 A?

Same as your regular route except that going west out Catskill stay on 23 (not 23A) towards Windham, go south on 296 and come into Haines Falls from the west.

I agree, but what else can we do.......so as I head south on 296, I'll keep a watchful eye out for lost E's.:-o
Guess, I'll head out earlier from home as well.
Gee, and it's going to be our biggest meet ever, can't miss it.

ramblerdan 07-03-2006, 03:17 PM So this is the route?

Or this?
http://www.skidmore.edu/~pdwyer/e/eoc/loop7b.gif
Gaily 07-03-2006, 05:39 PM For those coming from the south looks like the best route would be to get off the thruway at exit 19 in Kingston, take route 28 west to Phoenicia, north on route 214 to 23a. Puts you on 23a between Hunter & Tannersville. (I saw the sign for 214 with a small detour to the thruway when we were coming home but didn't know where it went to.) Right on 23a to Haines Falls. According to AAA 2 hours & 15 minutes. If I remember correctly on the way up there were detour signs for Hunter Mountain saying to take route 28.

jurneez 07-03-2006, 09:58 PM Hmmm...this could be an opportunity for a rally!
I was think'n the same thing. Many could meet up say north of Catskill on 23 and road rally all the rest of the way. some coming from the north (Mysticfalcon etc,) some from the east and some from the south. The southern folks could meet somewher on 296 with you guys......But I don't know. I'm already going to be there and tied to my tent, getting there on Friday.
Rally up Bald Eagle, go for it!

When you say Rally, what do you mean exactly? Like FIA Rally Racing? I love Rally Racing but I don't know if this is what you mean.
Evanator 07-05-2006, 10:12 AM When you say Rally, what do you mean exactly? Like FIA Rally Racing? I love Rally Racing but I don't know if this is what you mean.
Rally as in caravan
jesbecause 07-05-2006, 11:01 AM Does the rally have to be confined to fri only ? How about sat ? Just want to know who's going to lead the way in ? Sounds like a lot of problems up there . It's early and I guess there's plenty of time , just wanted to keep up the thread
and try to know , what to expect . Don't want to volunteer anyone , BUT , kill two birds with one stone . Can we find a place from multiple directions ? And possibly meet ? (Rest areas) We are the northeast and should be able to show our brother members , how to do things right ! That long fishhook into hainesfalls looks bad . I'm coming from the south so , I don't see any problems (GWB) but coming N/E OUCH ! I bet we can get everybody to meet at certain times and locations on each day , something to shoot for . 9-10am ?
Gaily 07-05-2006, 11:26 AM Jesbecause - that detour effects all of us. If you follow the detour signs from exit 20 add another 1.5 hours to your trip. If you follow my directions above you should have to add addition time.
FYI - the detour from exit 20 is well marked to get you into Hunter except at the end of 296. Turn left.

Nothing that severe. Nothing where all four wheels leave the pavement at the same time. Maybe a shortest distance rally? Meet somewhere along 23 before 296 cuts-off, check everybody's odometer and whoever arrives at North South Lake with the lowest elapsed mileage wins.
We would need a short odometer check course before everyone departs from the official starting point to make sure tire/wheel variations don't skew the results too much. With everybody arriving at different times, this may be difficult to pull off.
Maybe just have a informal "honor system" rally. Pick an official starting point where everybody records their start mileage and an official end point and see what turns up. This assumes we are all taking the same route.

Uncle MIke 07-05-2006, 02:41 PM Well, we are one step closer to becoming "real campers".........
I just bought my first tent!!
I was in Dick's this weekend and couldn't pass up the sale they had. I got an "easy up" Quest 10' by 10' canopy for $49.99 (reg $99.99) and the Tent Accessory that attaches to it for $59.00 (reg $99.00) I'm kind of diggin the fact that I can use just the canopy when needed or both together when I need a tent. Very roomy with 4 big windows and it just hooks right on to the telescoping canopy poles. Seemed like a good deal for a $100 investment!:-D
Question for those of you with "easy up" canopies: Are they really EASY?:)
ramblerdan 07-05-2006, 03:32 PM Haven't used that particular brand Mike, but yes, they're pretty darn easy, compared to the old style canopies with a hundred near-identical parts to assemble.
cai88 07-06-2006, 09:46 AM Mike-They are extemely easy to set up. One of my co-workers uses the same set up you just bought and swears by it. He camps alot too.
Uncle MIke 07-06-2006, 11:42 AM ....yes, they're pretty darn easy....

Looking forward to Hanes Falls and trying them out.
jurneez 07-06-2006, 06:17 PM Update July 6, 2006
Congrats Mike on the tent. Now ya gotta get a porta potty:-P
p.s. who the he** is in 215? Poor guy.
Bald Eagle 07-08-2006, 09:16 PM Seventeen sites reserved and still seven weeks to go!
Who's coming for just the day? Saturday? Sunday?
Rube? Loco? Anyone else?
jstatik 07-08-2006, 09:28 PM We are going to be leaving early Sunday morning so site 199 can be used for parking for anybody coming in for the day on Sunday.
Catskills Grrl 07-08-2006, 10:52 PM The Woodstock on this map is not THE Woodstock. That could confuse people. THE Woodstock is in Ulster County, south of Greene County, where Haines Falls is. I think there is a second Woodstock somewhere else in New York State, but I am not sure where.
ramblerdan 07-09-2006, 09:04 AM That's true, Catskills Grrl. Strange that there should be two Woodstocks, only 25 miles apart and in adjacent counties.
Is 23A closed between the Thruway and Route 32; between Route 32 and Palenville; or between Palenville and Haines Falls?
mysticfalcon 07-09-2006, 10:23 AM Just a tip for you Garmin GPS users I was just looking for the campground on my GPS but it wasnt listed but if you search for your camp site number on loop 7 it will show right up. I put in 195 on loop 7 road and it came right up where it belongs. pretty neat.
ChrisD 07-10-2006, 10:28 PM I've been traveling upstate for 9 years due to co-owning a house in Hunter. August is a tough month for me, I'm on midnights and am working that Friday and Sat. I hope you all have a great time, North South lake has some good mountain biking trails if your into it.
Catskills Grrl you must be a skier???

Bald Eagle 07-27-2006, 04:04 PM Got a call today from the place where we are "camping" for the SB&HF-II (Brookside B&B in Haines Falls). Route 23A from Palenville to Haines Falls will be closed until November so the alternate Route detour will the only way to get to North South Lake.

cai88 07-28-2006, 09:51 AM If Tim and Elaine need a place then they can jump on my site. I don't think we can bring outside firewood in so we will have to buy some there. I didn;t finish it and things were way too crazy around here to do anything with it.

ds97a 07-31-2006, 07:39 AM Hey folks,
My wife and I were talking and, we were thinking of Golfing on Saturday morning, somewhere down in the area, and then coming to the site afterward. So, I guess my point is,
A) our site will be open Friday night if anyone needs it.
B) If anyone is a golfer, we would love to have you join us. (we are beginners so, you should probably bring your sense of humor).
On a side note: has anyone invested in a 12v coffee maker yet? I have definitely considered it. If no one has, I will.
Finally, has anyone actually put an air matress in the back of an element? I was wondering what the max size would be?
Thanks
-Dan
Uncle MIke 07-31-2006, 09:56 AM Hello Dan,
Your post looks like one I could have eaily written since my wife and I are a couple of hacks who "golfed" yesterday, and a coffee maker and air mattress are also on my shopping list.
Harry was kind enough to have made a Dunkin Donuts run for a "Box O' Joe" at the last meet, but I doubt that will be possible this time. Ramblerdan gave me a minature fold up burner that will heat water, so I'm thinking of buying a "French Press" style of coffee maker and I'll be all set. I just bought a tent so I won't have to worry about what size mattress to buy, but I'm still curious as to what size fits in an Element.:)
cai88 07-31-2006, 10:55 AM I'm pretty sure the only size that fits fully inflated is a twin. You might be able to cram a full size in there. I do have an extra tent.
Bald Eagle 07-31-2006, 11:07 AM You might find a 12V coffee maker that will do a cup at a time, but that's probably about it.
I went through a crock pot-12V inverter exercise for the spring meet. Found an 80 watt crock pot, but my inverter was less than 80W. It was cheaper to buy a one burner propane stove at Wow-Mart than a more powerful inverter. Heating water for coffee takes a lot of power. Just checked the coffee maker in the kitchen...900 watts. I wonder what those coil heaters that you stick in a cup of water draw? Haven't used one since college...just after the dawn of the Bronze Age.
On another note...
We'll set up a screened canopy on our site, but won't be camping overnight Friday or Saturday, so there's another option.
Man, I haven't played golf in years. I'd all but forgotten the "woosh, woosh, woosh" sound a five-iron makes when you fling it down the fairway. Just didn't have the temperment for the game and couldn't find clubs that float.
1790
ramblerdan 07-31-2006, 12:43 PM Carly is correct about the mattress. A twin fits with a few inches to spare on the side(s). A queen is too wide.
http://www.skidmore.edu/~pdwyer/e/eoc/camping_interior.jpg
Tim Vance 07-31-2006, 01:33 PM I've always found that a pressure cooker is very good for heating water.....
We'll be bringing one, with our stove.....
Gaily 07-31-2006, 05:00 PM Dan,
I had a full size Coleman mattress at first but found it too big. Keep in mind this was on my platform which is 11" high. The 8" is high & you can't sit up. When I fully inflated the mattress it filled up the entire back with the front seats all the way forward & was level with the windows. Didn't try on the floor so I don't know how that would work. Check out Cabelas they have different thickness/size sleeping pads/air beds.
I got the full size.

Uncle MIke 08-01-2006, 02:07 AM FATALITY AT TENTBACK BEACH! (QUINEBAUG RIVER)
Did anyone else catch this sad story on the CBS local news channel? I couldn't believe it when I saw video footage of "Tentback Beach" followed by the sad story of a 17 year old boy who drowned when he "fell off the back of a boat". His mother was on tv saying that places like this should have a lifeguard to prevent drownings like this from happening. She dosn't agree with the fact that beaches may operate by simply posting that there is "No Lifeguard On Duty".
I was surprised to see the place that Bald Eagle and I stopped at on our 11.5 mile kayak exploration, and the possible site for a future meet on the news......BUT......it should be no surprise that controversy is bound to follow Tentback Beach. The distraught mom showed pics of her son and said his organs were donated. Very sad........R.I.P. :-(

Bald Eagle: How about you/I/we/all of us Northeast EOCer's... work on making a scrapbook to bring to the meets?! How cool would that be... just imagine the blackmail photos!
Well, um...uh....maybe on second thought we should make two books since I just remembered the "pocket pool" photo.
(I wish I thought of this sooner since I can't find all of the photos and links of past threads, Meet #1, past announcements and your newsletter/homepages.
jurneez 08-01-2006, 06:13 AM Scrapbook,
what a very excellent idea........
Although most pics are digital, but printouts are easy enough. It kind of makes my 20 year old film camera seem important again to me.
I wish we started this much earlier. If we started now,we could do this.
Jeeeze, what a great idea.
Good thinking, even for 3:47a.m.

cai88 08-01-2006, 07:21 AM Hey Carly, if misfits was established july 14, last year, was that when we met at the place in Mass. Summer bug fest I think?
There was an earlier (or later) meet in Auburn/Oxford area (that place with the cavern (Mike,... where I first met you guys putting up the screen / shade thing), then the summer one at the resevoir, and the fall one I missed because vinnie decided to hold a conversation with Mr. Skunk, no way I was sleeping with him:shock:
Was there an early spring one? I can't remember.....Was Brattleboro #4 or 5?
Just curious......

Actually Jurneez the Misfits were established at last year's National Meet in Ohio. I do consider my fellow Northeast members Misfits because well you're all damn crazy!! But hey that's why I love you guys:cool:

ramblerdan 08-01-2006, 09:11 AM Eagle,
I'll chip in for the banner, but I'm not hot on full capitalization.
Northeast Chapter
or
NorthEast Chapter
would be better, IMO.

Normally I'd agree with you 100%, but it can work for signs and very short titles (two words max). It started as u/l case, but I liked the all caps version better. That said, I'm willing to go back and revisit the issue.

Note: This was done in red and black originally, but the red magically changed to blue when I converted the file from .pdf to .jpg. I think I like it better. The red really screamed and the toned down versions didn't have the right punch. Anybody else have any all caps input? By the way, thanks for your support.

hmbhuss1 08-01-2006, 12:02 PM I'm in on the banner. Good Idea, Eagle! I like the u/l Case version better than all caps. The blue does look good.

Actually.... the Misfits really started the year before in Gettysberg.....It wasn't until the 1st Annual Meet that it was confirmed what we actually were...(I think someone made a comment about the bunch of misfits still hanging out in the parking lot)
jesbecause 08-01-2006, 02:10 PM I'll chip in !!!! Any updates on how full loop 7 is ?
jurneez 08-01-2006, 03:40 PM LOOP 7 and banner
I have no choice either will do for the banner caps or u/l case.
Loop 7, I asked about a week ago if anyone knew of anyone else going who I had not marked on the map. Tonight I'll repost the map and ask again....
I think it still at around 18 sites rented.
But there are Sunday Lunch people who are just going for the day..
Should be a good bunch!
So if anyone out there is going and rented a site please tell us, so we can get a head count and get you on the map, thanks,
jurn
ds97a 08-01-2006, 04:10 PM Hey! Cool idea on the banner! Count me in. Regarding the caps, I like banners that YELL at me. (I prefer caps but, am not a grammer buff.) So,off we go!
Thanks to all for the tips on the mattress. I'll have to measure the width of the floor. My suspicions are that Paul is correct and only a twin will fit. Should be nice and cozy but... I just got my very own cabana and the skreenz are on the way so, darn it, I'm gonna use them!
Thanks and we'll see you soon!

PS
Has anyone started to put the food categories together yet, as in whose bringing what? (Alcohol is obviously an everyone thing :D )

I'm bringing ribs.
Is that okay with everyone. Gail I know you brought them to Tentback, the more the merrier I say.

Seeing as how we're twenty-one pages and 210 posts into this thread, how about a new thread for Summer Meet Menu Planning? Riding the crest of success with the banner suggestion, I'm just going to do it.
1797
ds97a 08-02-2006, 09:20 AM How about breaking it up into four catagories:
1.) hor's d'oeuvres/munchies,
2.) main dishes,
3.) side dishes,
4.) desserts.
Then divide the head count by 4 and have people sign up for a catagory?
If we have 32 people coming, then we need 8 volunteers for each category and they would bring enough food for just 4 people.
I had to hunt back for this great post by BaldEagle. I think that aside from the variety of, surprise stuff, this could be a pretty effective way of dividing the tasks.
1.) hor's d'oeuvres/munchies,
2.) main dishes
-Jurn: Ribs
-Dan (ds97a): shrimp kabobs
3.) side dishes,
4.) desserts.
What d'ya think?

I'll do the camping thing next time around, but I just got my E so I just want to just book something and show up for this one.

We're staying at the Brookside B&B in Haines Falls. It's the closest one to North South Lake. Comfy, but nothing fancy. Check out www.hunterbnb.com (http://www.hunterbnb.com)

RobfromLI 08-13-2006, 12:14 PM we should be purchasing our new E by the 21st... hope to at least. it's just a matter of "the timing."
i have convinced my wife to take the ride to N/S Lake that Sunday. hope to make it to meet some of the members, and to see the E's.
plus we love N/S Lake, and the surrounding area. we are frequent re-visitors to the area.

peruytu 08-14-2006, 02:50 PM I was thinking of starting a new thread, but I figured it'd be best to keep it all together.
Since this is my first time camping ever, I need to know the basics.. as to what to bring, what to expect, what to be prepared for, etc...
This past weekend I bought a tent, flashlight, a knife (just in case somebody tries to get all Michael Myers on me! :-P I kid I kid), an inflatable bed, and thats it for now I guess. What else should I take?
In terms of food, I know it was brought up... what exactly should I bring? Do I need to bring everything in order to eat, or is it like a group thing where everybody brings something different in order to enjoy everything the group has brought? Do I bring utensils? plates?
When I reach my campsite, who makes sure everybody is in their place? I'm sorta scared that i'll arrive and see somebody has taken my spot (I know it may seem silly but i'm knew to this).
Anything else I should know? Anything else I will need?
I'm sorry for sounding so ignorant, but there's only so much that I can learn from the internet, I think people with experience have a lot more knowledge to offer, so I'm hoping that any of you can help.
cai88 08-14-2006, 03:00 PM Saturday night is the only group meal. There is a thread where you can sign up to bring something.
Other than that stay simple with meals. You might want to pick up a small grill, cooler, some paper plates, napkins and plastic silverware. There is a market nearby so if you forget something or need to go grab something you're set. There is also alot of different cafe's near Hunter Mtn.
Relax abut the site. They are all marked so you just find your # and set up camp. We will all be around if you need any help.
Oh and be prepared for a hell of a lot of fun!

Bald Eagle 08-14-2006, 04:18 PM A battery or propane lantern is kind of handy for general illumination.
Peruytu brings up a good point. Should everybody bring their own paper plates, cups, napkins, plastic wear, etc. or does somebody want to go to Costco/Sam's Club/WalMart and buy a weekend's worth of this stuff that we can share and split the cost?
If you are challenged in the cooking department, just PM somebody who's already posted a menu item and see if you can double their quantity, split the cost and help prepare it. Just make sure you post something on the menu thread so it gets listed.

Gaily 08-14-2006, 07:17 PM So I went to CVS over the weekend to check out this tiki head that looks like it has a flame in it's face. Just had to pick one up. Wait till you see.
Then I found a luau limbo game with tiki faces that light up on top of the poles. I figure after several drinks we'll be limber enough to play. Only thing missing is the music. I'm sure someone can provide. :D

oh my God, Gail, what kind of CVS's do you have there? I went to ours and never saw anything like that. I seriously believe you attract Pink Flamingo's and the like to you!
I did pick up a few goodies, thought the Friday crew could start out with.
Don't forget everyone, it's a Hawiian (sp?) theme. Of course after I realize I can't spell it I attract attention to it by Bolding.....duhhhh
Uncle Mike, maybe you should bring the Tiki head you have. (traditional, isn't it?)

We just got new camping dinnerware at Sam's Army Navy in Brattleboro along with metal martini glasses! Woo Hoo!
As far as the limbo goes, we used to do the limbo song when I was in the reggae band, so I'll try to remember that. BTW, I have been learning all your requests diligently, even the ******* song, Uncle Mike... Yes, that's the asterisk song.
Also, we just got back from a week's vacation in Brattleboro. One day we went into the Latchis and when they saw the Element outside security came along and escorted us out! What was that about???

So this is good, you went to Brattleboro, I was going to make a suggestion that we try again this year for the sleigh ride - Latchis thing. I think we should set that up again for our Winter thing. Last year it rained right before our sleigh ride and we lost the snow. Sleigh ride was Cancelled....darn. (of course the time was filled with other adventures )
I loved that trip and the Brattleboro Food co-op is right next to Latchis. I dragged home food I can't find here....Oh my God to die for great stuff....
So, this winter we might be able to rent a floor, or half of a floor.
Only, no evacuations, no firetrucks, etc.....
I'd spilt the cost for the suite w/Carly and gail?????? The corner was was sweet. Do they have ajoining rooms or bigger suites?

Justinb845 08-16-2006, 02:29 AM OK,
Just some thoughts about the meet.
I am contplating compleating a mod before the meet. I am not sure what to use to cut into the plastic to do a light mod that I am doing. I am going to make a turn signel mod taking the side marker light that I got on e bay a clear one ( now thinking I have to cilacone it before I do the mod) and making it like a turn signel indacater on the side of the car by the doors. If not compleated anyone bring a dremel tool and a sodering gun with them?? LOL
I bounced this mod off the mechanic at Honda (ths one that told me to pitch my 98 accord V6 due to a bad tranny and replacement at $4000) he siad it looks like it might be cool. so a splicing I will go. I know a guy at work that is into cutting and stuff so I might be able to get him to do it iwth me after working a night shift.
so looking forward to this even though i got jury duty notice and have to do the call the tape thing starting on th 28th
so see who ever on the Sunday the 27th
