: Big Problem - iPod Stolen!
alextreme76 06-28-2006, 06:44 PM Yeah I had a huge problem lastnight.... I parked my E outside of Circle K to run in and grab a soda for the road... I usually just hop out and in, never check anything... well I get back out and go to turn my iPod back on... ITS GONE! I left the windows down, I literally could see my car from anywhere inside, I guess I just didnt pay attention, and someone had the nerve to steal my iPod
I really hate people sometimes
yoda13 06-28-2006, 08:17 PM That sux man. I am sorry to hear it.
kb9yiv 06-28-2006, 09:15 PM Report the theft and serial number to Apple. Maybe they can trace it if someone tries to use it on i-tunes online:confused:
mufasah 06-28-2006, 10:17 PM That sux. I think people who steal should be beaten with a baseball bat.
That does suck. Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.
tango 06-29-2006, 11:03 AM In Dallas Texas, even in our very nice neighborhood, one does not leave valuable things in vehicles parked outside (even locked), leave vehicles open and unlocked (even for 5 minutes while paying for gas), or even leave one's garage door open while at home. The world has become a place where there are always people who will happily and without guilt, take what's yours. And yes, other people saw the thief reach in and take your ipod and not one of them said or did anything ether. It's that whole - "it's all about ME and only ME" attitude that is so pervasive these days. If it doesn't affect them, why get involved?
So sorry this happened to you - one must be vigilant every minute (sadly). Do make a police report though. It might help the NEXT person.
Sorry to hear about that! :(
Americonium 06-29-2006, 12:16 PM How much is your homeowners deductible? Or should I start with, do you have homeowners insurance? Either way, you learned a valuable lesson. People, in general, are greedy, thieving, sneaky-sneaks.
However, Karma always prevails.
Oh, and I don't believe Apple gives 2 hoots about the serial number. Apple just encourages thievery by not having a way to block stolen iPods from working.
Sorry to hear, hope you find an iPod that suits you soon...
kmac17 06-29-2006, 12:21 PM Sorry to hear that happened. That really sucks. And you want to just trust people, but they keep doing things that make that harder every day.
Hope you get back up and running with another one soon.
walletclan 06-29-2006, 12:48 PM Something's afoot at the Circle-K.....
Mark C 06-30-2006, 10:00 AM Oh, and I don't believe Apple gives 2 hoots about the serial number. Apple just encourages thievery by not having a way to block stolen iPods from working.
So Apple is a fault for an iPod getting stolen?? How intrusive would any manufacturer be to have an item "call home" every time it's used? Note the current flap about Windows Genuine Advantage. Or about Sony's rootkit ensuring you can play a CD before it allows you to do so? My Tale of Sony (http://www.mboxcommunity.com/SONY.html)
Quite frankly, I can do without any item calling home for a "Use Check". If in the unlikely event it was sent in for service, it could be returned when reported as stolen. But that happens all the time.
outpost4 07-01-2006, 10:38 AM ^ Plus you are making your problem Apple's problem.
Eclipse's ESN on Guard system is designed to recover stolen car stereos. They won't work without a key CD being inserted after losing power. If you try to power it up more than a few times without the key CD, an 800 number comes up for service. Any thief stupid enough to call that number gets a nice song and dance by Eclipse designed to get the deck sent in for service (they'll even pay for shipping). Assuming a police report was filed with Eclipse on the theft and that the deck was initially registered with Eclipse for the ESN on Guard system, the next person to contact the owner of the stolen car stereo is the police.
As a store, we'll also work with Eclipse on this when somebody brings in an Eclipse deck to us, saying it won't power up.
Eclipse is a little car stereo company and this system takes a few people to manage, given the initial registration, service, theft, tracking, replacement decks, etc. With the millions of iPods out there, the number of people Apple would need to employ to manage a similar system would be a whole department. When did absorbing that cost become their responsibility?
I'm sympathetic for your loss. Nobody likes to have stuff stolen from them. Making it Apple's responsibility to resolve the situation isn't a solution.
Americonium 07-05-2006, 09:01 AM If my XM or Sirius receiver is stolen, I can have it shut down. Perhaps that's all I want then, is a way to disable it over the Internet once I prove to Apple that I owned it, and it was stolen. Hey, why should the thief get to use it?
Why bother putting electronic serial numbers on things, if we can't use them to our advantage. Yes, I agree, that you should never give the thief the edge, in this case, an open window, but shouldn't we have a little power over what happens to our stolen stuff after it's gone?
JPH102900 07-05-2006, 09:24 AM I live in a great neighborhood but I would never think of leaving my car running, unlocked, or windows down in front of a convenience store. I guess you won't do that again.
Oh, and I don't believe Apple gives 2 hoots about the serial number. Apple just encourages thievery by not having a way to block stolen iPods from working.
Why don't you blame Honda while you're at it for making it possible to walk away from your car without the doors automatically locking?
Americonium 07-05-2006, 10:02 AM So, so far it's
1. alextreme76's fault for not locking his doors.
2. Apple's fault for not making the unit unusable after theft or loss.
3. Honda's fault for not installing the same alarm system that Corvette puts in their vehicles.
4. My fault for being so small minded as to think that manufacturers should put some anti-theft devices in their equipment.
5. Government welfare programs for not equipping everyone that can't afford an iPod, with an iPod.
6. Satan. (The devil made him do it.)
7. Jesus. (God didn't stop him.)
8. Circle K for not having armed response in the parking lot.
9. The F.A.Q. for not including instructions on how to camouflage your iPod as discarded trash.
10. The thief's mother for not raising him right.
11. The thief's father for not beating him enough.
12. Me again, because I'm assuming that the thief is male.
13. Colombian drug lords, for the mass quantities of crack cocaine available near the Circle K.
14. Society as a whole, because someone didn't stop the theft in the first place.
15. Karma. Gee, alextreme76, how much of the music on that iPod was paid for anyway? (J/K)
16. The founders of the EOC, for promoting Element usage.
17. Honda, again, for putting that nifty little aux jack in there.
The point I'm trying to make is that I said that it was Apple's fault. What I should have said is, I wonder why Apple doesn't have a way to disable stolen iPods. That probably would have gone over a little better. Or not. No telling around here.
Now, someone please spell check and correct my grammar.
EDIT: fixed it.
You forgot...
16. The founders of the EOC, for promoting Element usage.
outpost4 07-05-2006, 09:03 PM It's San Andreas' Fault.
Damn crack in the earth!
3_3rdHonda 07-06-2006, 09:55 AM Did you run this past your shrink? Maybe you unconsciously wanted it gone so you could get the New Improved model [with the 20,000 tunes capacity...That's a MUST.]
See, this is what happens when you don't pay attention and others do. At first glance, I thought that was the Three Stooges in your signature.
Arizona, Circle K... It's the new wild west, partner... Banditos, capeesh? AKA, Illegal Aliens, Suspect #1.
