: Driver's window auto up/down function inoperative after battery disconnect

I installed the Honda fog lamps last night. Everything went fairly well but I noticed today that the automatic power window feature doesn't work!

The driver's side power window works fine but when I click and release the switch, the window just stops.

The only thing I can think of is either I accidently loosened a connector around where the relay resides or I have a defective wiring harness.

I'm going to debug it tonight and hopefully find a loose connector. I cringe at the thought of replacing that harness; it was a pain to install.

Has anyone else had this experience?

There is a faq on the Honda Canada website in regards to what to do to reset the driver's side express up/down. In a nutshell, take the window down and hold the switch for a few seconds, then take the window up and hold it for a few seconds.

It's easy to find on the Honda Canada website, and I think someone has copied the url to this board.

if the battery is disconnected (or dies) the the auto up/down function of the window will not work. to reset it you roll the window down and hold it for 2 seconds and then roll the window up and hold it for two seconds. that will reset the memory. i discovered this following after-market installation of the alarm.

I recently installed the keyless entry on my new Element. However, I have one small problem - the auto up/down function on the driver's window is disabled. Can anyone help me on this? Thought I read a thread in one of the forums about this but can't find it now.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!!

you have to reset the memory... hold the down button all the way down until it opens all the way and continue to hold it for 2 seconds more... then close the window and keep holding the button for 2 seconds after the window is closed

Yes the sytem has to relearn that it has the auto capability. Hold down 2 secs past stop, up 2 secs past stop. Thats all there is to it!

Hi all,

After doing the side light/blinker modification I left my lights on for 4 hours or so. Battery went dead. Its all charged up now fine, but my automatic down and up window doesn't work. i could manage to reset the clock - funny, all my radio presets were still valid.

But, the auto-up/down on my window doesn't work now.

Any ideas on that one??

TIA

If i ever had to guess i'd say 10% of the cars we get traded in are missing the owners manual.....Is it possible that most people take them out of the glove box so they can squeeze one more raod map or an emergency supply of gummy bears in there?.....I know when im working on my E my manual is in my office filing cabinet.....and yes on occasison i've been guilty of neglecting to RTFM.

I've recently encountered a problem with my auto up/down window feature. At least once every two weeks I had to reset the damn thing as per the manual. After giving up a few months ago, it seems to have reset itself. Low battery or faulty switch?

I installed an intake and removed the battery to do this. Now my window won't auto down or up. Is there something I need to know or is it just coincidence?

Yeah I'm a dumb-a. There are about 10 other post exactly like this one. I knew about the radio reset, but never figured you had to reset the window too. Thanks.

Don't feel bad. I made the same mistake and posted here.. got several RTFM's! :-)

Pretty simple fix.

I disconnected the battery yesterday to do some work; however after plugging the batt back in the driver side automatic window button stopped working. The window will roll up and down with no problem but it just wouldn't go up and down automatically anymore even when i press it hard

Have you tried this? Pull up on the switch and hold it for a few seconds after it closes. I think that sets the auto feature.

(It's probably in your owners manual.) :)

Pull and hold the driver’s window
switch to close the window
completely, then hold the switch
for a second or two more.
Start the engine. Push down and
hold the driver’s window switch
until the window is fully open.

Page 105 of the 2003 manual states:

"If your vehicle's battery is disconnected or goes dead, or the driver's window fuse is removed, the AUTO function will be disabled. The power window system needs to be reset after reconnecting the battery or installing the fuse. You should do the following.

1. Start the engine. Push down on the driver's window switch until the window is fully open.

2. Pull back on the driver's window switch to close the window completely, then hold the switch for a second or two more.

If the power windows do not operate properly after resetting, have your vehicle checked by a Honda dealer."

I just had to replace my battery. No problem, at least after I found my radio code :) However what doesn't work now is the automatic up and down on the drivers window. Worked before battery was changed. Is there a setting or fuse that could have been messed up? If it matters it is an '05

Thanks, this was much quicker than looking in the manual. esp since it's always in the car - and I'm usually at a PC. Now I have to figure out how to reset or fix the auxiliary function on the radio. That went too after the new battery install.

After a battery disconnect, you will need to enter the radio code. Does the radio play, or is it just the Aux not working?

I had to put in a new battary yesterday after the old one died on me and now my Automatic up and down for the driver side window isn't working, the window still works but you have to hold the button down:confused:. Could it be a blown fuse after the attempt to charge my battery and trying to start it up or something else. Not a huge issue but would like to fix it.

That was from the owners manual....it cost about $20,000 but came with a free car.

Losts of good stuff has been omited from later versions.

The service manual includes that tidbit plus a few more for a measley $75.

I replaced my driver door last night & everything went perfectly! only issue is my "One Touch" driver window up/down function seems to have disappeared!

I'm headed outside to get my owners manual now to see if my answer is there....but in the mean time, anyone know how to reset that feature? thanks in advance.... Pat

Yes...it has to be reset every time the battery un-hooked.

Pull and hold the driver’s window
switch to close the window

for a second or two more.
Start the engine. Push down and
hold the driver’s window switch
until the window is fully open.

Once again proving that this forum us worth far more than the nothing that I pay for it, I found myself replacing the battery and having this issue. Thank you to whoever took the time to read the manual first, rather than, like myself, ran screaming to the EOC forums.....

It actually 'corrected' itself within a few minutes of resting comfortably with the key out in, while sitting in the garage.

By the way, anyone looking for a higher-amp, but stock fitment battery, let me stick in my two cents:

Safe Start batteries, www.safe-start.com, is who we use to stock our battery racks (for diesel trucks), and when I called, they delivered a group 51R, 510CA/625CCA/85 reserve amp, direct-fit unit, for (my wholesale cost) of $53.00, plus the core charge. Considering the original is labeled '410CCA', with no reserve rating, I'd say a greater than 50% increase in CCA was worth more than I paid. And when I say 'direct fit', I mean zero modifications period.

Now, to be fair, that was distribution pricing, but even if you added a modest 30% GPM into that (which is typical of service shops), you'd still have $75.00 wrapped up. And, since my battery was still not 'completely' gone (load tested fine down to 400amps), I can use it for a 12 base power supply for my bench projects until it finally dies. Certainly worth paying the $5.00 core charge.

It also comes with a 75 month, pro-rated warranty, but with 24 months free replacement. We've used these batteries for some time in much larger forms (Groups 78/85/65 are the norm for me), and I've never had a failure, so I think it might be a good alternative to the expensive Optima and Odyssey units.

My wife's E was having trouble starting, so I took it to Batteries Plus earlier this week and bought a new battery after testing the old one and finding out it was dead. I replaced the battery yesterday and then just pulled the car in the garage (after making sure it started). Now my wife said that the windows won't work and the radio does not work. I understand the radio not working, because it is an EX and I need to put the radio code in, however I don't understand the window issue. Is that normal?

There is a reset procedure for the auto up and down on the drivers window. You have to do it if you disconnect the battery cables. I dont have the info here, though I am sure if you search here you will find it.

2005 owner's manual, page 81:

If your vehicle's battery is disconnected or goes dead, or the driver's window fuse is removed, AUTO function will be disabled. The power window system needs to be reset after reconnec0ting the battery or installing the fuse.

1. Start the engine. Push down and hold the driver's window switch until the window is fully open.

2. Pull and hold the driver’s window switch to close the window completely, then hold the switch for a second or two more.

If the power windows do not operate properly after resetting, have your vehicle checked by your dealer.

Power Window Control Unit Reset

Resetting the power window control unit is required after performing the following procedures:

Loss of battery power
Loss of power from the No. 23 (20A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box
Open circuit caused by disconnecting the 14P connector from the power window master switch.
Make sure the driver's window does not work in AUTO with the ignition switch ON (II).
Start the engine.
Lower the driver's window all the way down by pushing the driver's power window switch to the second detent (AUTO DOWN); when the window reaches the bottom, hold the switch in the AUTO DOWN position for 2 seconds.
Raise the driver's window all the way up without stopping by pulling the driver's power window switch to the UP position; when the window reaches the top, hold the switch in the UP position 2 seconds.
If the window does not work in AUTO, repeat Step 2 through 5.

Any reason why the Auto up/down might not be working?

They were working the other day. Then I just had daytime running lights installed and the auto up/down isn't working. I also had my battery die on me the other day. My Element has 6000 miles on it.

I ran my battery down the other day listening to the radio while I was working. Today the auto-up/down function on the driver's side window wasn't working. I was searching for a cheap switch and directions for replacement when I came across this post. You saved me $80, a half-day install, and likely an outcome that still wouldn't have resolved the issue. I love this forum! Thanks so much for the posting.

Last week the element had the drivers window smashed out and luckily nothing was taken. Had the window replaced but now the one-touch up and down feature is not working. Before i take it back to the place, has anyone else had this happen?

edit: Nevermind, finally found the answer. Had to dig real deep in the forum.

Just need to reactivate it. Instructions should be in the manual, but I believe all you need to do is with either the E running or with the key in the on position so the radio would work. Hold the window button down for 2-3 seconds then hold it up for 2-3 seconds. Then it should work.

Hold the window button down for 2-3 seconds then hold it up for 2-3 seconds. Then it should work.

This happened to me twice (Not the broken window part) when my battery died or was close to dead (Manual indicates the same). The instruction from the manual state the following. Start the car >>> Bring the window down completely >>> put one hand on your head >>> bring the window up completely and hold for an extra 2 seconds.

OK, I made up the "Put one head on your head" part.

TY all for the posting.

from the 2009 manual...

If your vehicle's battery is disconnected
or goes dead, or the driver's window
fuse is removed, the AUTO function
may be disabled. If this happens, the
power window system will need to be
reset after reconnecting the battery or
installing the fuse.
1. Start the engine. Push down and
hold the driver's window switch until
the window is fully open.
2. Pull and hold the driver's window
switch to close the window
completely, then hold the switch for
about 2 seconds.
If the power windows do not operate
properly after resetting, have your
vehicle checked by your dealer.

Just had to share my happiness. For quite some time, my power window has been acting crazy. Pull up the auto switch.....the window would go up about 8 inches....then go back down all the way....then come up about 3 inches and stop. If it would just pull to the first click and hold it, the window would go up fine. Freaked me out.....stressed me out. I thought my Element had a problem........and I've put off going to the dealership. I figured as long as I could still close the window, I'd get by.

After reading this information from the EOC........I went out this morning and reset the power window feature. VIOLA! Works perfect! I'm happy! I replaced my battery a while back, and it just never occurred to me.............

I have read my owners manual......I always do.........but, somehow I missed that part. It's going to be a GREAT DAY! HAPPY.....HAPPY.....HAPPY!
