: No slip on the dash
PhillyElement 06-20-2003, 09:40 AM Hey all,
I am not sure I have seen this addressed anywhere, but its my small solution. I love the spaces in the dash for storage, but everything seems to slip and slide as I drive, so I went to my local Target and picked up some of that lattice like shelf liner (its kinda rubbery) that matched my blue interior perfectly (it comes in lots of colors) got it home and cut out pieces to fit in the spaces. You don't have to glue it, since its no slip it doesnt move when something is on it and this makes it easy to clean because it slides right out. No more sunglasses shifting when I stop and go! Its cheap and can be replaced easily. Hope it helps!
:D
[Moderator Edit: On page four (4) of this thread, there are templates for making your own non-slip cutouts.
It does work great, I have had that on mine for months, and even used some of it on the read seat mat.
:D
jayharley 06-21-2003, 10:40 AM I did the same thing. I used the lighter blue color and it looks great in my Silver E.
Also I cut a square piece and put it in the overhead storage area to keep stuff from slipping around up there. You can see the blue color thru the perforated screen material of the overhead.
Also cut round pieces and put them in the bottom of each cup holder. Works like a coaster.
TennesseE 06-22-2003, 09:17 PM My wife went to Dollar General today and picked up some of this stuff after she read this thread. Of course, this meant that your's truly got off his backside and went outside to install it. Now have it in evey place mentioned here save for the rear cargo area, and it looks great..........plus, no more water ring from the soda cans in the cup holders. Thanks for the idea.
PhillyElement 06-23-2003, 07:59 PM I did the cup holder thing as well, it does work great! I will have to try it in the overhead, didn't think of that one! :P
Smyth 06-30-2003, 10:57 PM Ok... here is the deal. I would like to do this to my E as well. I have the Shoreline Mist Exterior so the interior is gray/black.
I can not find any gray or black rubbery lattice stuff anywhere. I checked K-mart, but of course Matha's only has pretty girlie pastels and Wal-Mart only has bright pretties as well.
Where can I get some manly stuff!!! :-) Something grey or black?
Any idea folks? I am tired of my cell phone taking a ride on the dash board coaster. :-)

I know, I know. I ended up using the light blue color (matches my blue gray interior) but originally wanted black. Can't find it anywhere.
StLouisPenguin 07-01-2003, 05:13 AM I'll do some checking....I may be able to get my hands on some gray....I will check today and get back to you!
PhillyElement 07-01-2003, 10:11 AM I actually found a dark blue that matches the interior of my E. I seem to remember lots of colors. Go to the hardware department, not the kitchen department. They sell it to line the inside of those big toolboxes. Now you wouldn't want your toolbox lined in a nice pretty yellow, would you? I seem to remember seeing this at either Walmart or Target. If I see some I will pick it up if anyone wants it.
Bart Thomas 07-01-2003, 10:41 AM I got mine at Target. It's in the shelf-coverings area, but you have to ask because, in my store, it was NOT by the Contact paper.
Get the sales associate to schlep around with you. He'll know who to call when the obvious answer doesn't work and you make it clear that you KNOW every Target carries it, and that you intend to hang on to him/her until you find it.
StLouisPenguin 07-01-2003, 06:24 PM http://www.organize-everything.com/gripliner.html
The above link has black gripper liner.
Hope that helps!
StLouisPenguin 07-01-2003, 06:29 PM http://www.americanvan.com/catalog/standard.cfm?FamilyID=39
This place also has black and it is cheap!!!!
StLouisPenguin 07-01-2003, 06:37 PM http://www.speedguard.com/liners.htm
This stuff looks really cool....it is used in resturants and bars for under glasses and is sold in 12X12 squares and a rainbow of cool colors including black and gray! It says that it is easy to cut and is fairly inexpensive!
lon777 07-01-2003, 07:30 PM I used the blue stuff from Wally-world. If you don't want to mail-order, you can get the black stuff at Home Depot. It's called tool box liner and you'll find it in the tool section. I've also seen it at Sears and Lowes tool departments.
Smyth 07-02-2003, 12:13 AM Thanks for the quick replies! YOU FOLKS ROCK!!! 8)
TennesseE 07-02-2003, 11:51 AM Since I just finished organizing my tool chest, you might want to go to Sears and check out the tool box lining material. It is black and about 1/8" thick. they seel it by the roll. 5' will run about $10.
Smyth 07-02-2003, 04:29 PM Went to Lowes today and got some tool box lining stuff like some of you folks suggested before. Got a heck of a lot of it too.... Black, about 1/8" think and very very easy to trim and cut to shape.
Tried just a little spot for a test since I did not have much time to play. Will have plenty of time this weekend though!'
Thanks for all the suggestions on where to go!
StLouisPenguin 07-05-2003, 06:53 PM I bought some colonial blue colored darwer liner at Walmart on Thursday....it matches the EBP interior perfectly.....they also had a green shade that looks like it would match the GG interior pretty well.
I was also surprised to see that they had printed rubbery drawer liner.....if any of the prints were cool I would have given this a try to add a little more flair to my E!
SteveO 07-06-2003, 06:31 PM Yeah, Diane, you know what would be cool is a printed orange or blue hawaiian pattern! Everyone keep your eyes out! :P

jimxenus 08-17-2003, 06:48 PM I put some of this stuff into my new Element and I found it took a little time to make templates of all the cut outs. So for the benefit of future users, I've scanned in my templates, touched them up in Photoshop. They're not perfect and you might need to do a little minor trimming but here they are below. Just to make things a little exciting, you can figure out where they go. :D
Just a technical note, these scans are designed to print properly on a typical PC monitor that use 96dpi screen resolution. However, most Macintosh systems use 72dpi. If you need a mac version, please click on this link: http://www.jimlin.com/pics/mac/mac.html
Keep in mind that not all macs use 72dpi. If that is the case, then the only other alternative is to load the images into a program like Photoshop which will scale properly no matter what dpi your monitor is set at.

Thanx for the patterns, I used them last night to do some redecorating in my element. I had to cut them a little big then trim to fit. Took 10 min.
thanx again.

Hope I can cut out these small squares and circles like ya'll said.

orange cool box 12-01-2003, 10:59 PM The black sould be fine for everything but the dash board. Black would get way too hot in the summer. MIght even melt the dash. Anyone seen gray for the dash. I saw a faux reed matt of the same rubbery material at Target. that would work also. Careful not to cover the small vents next to the windshield. thats your defroster, you know. :D

So I read the original posted thread and went off to Sears to get some of the tool box liner, cut the pieces using the patterns provided and now after a few weeks most of the ones on the dash have either fallen off or my "wifey" has knocked them off the dash as she uses the it to "leave" stuff on it and I imagine when the "stuff" falls to the floor, so does the liners......any suggestions....

how about some double-stick tape? either the thin office type or the thick foamy type.
mageac 01-05-2004, 07:23 PM i was thinking about using rubber cement to glue on the shelf liners. it seems that this would easily peel off when i need it without harming the dash material. just thinking about it...waiting for someone to try it out for me. any volunteers?
pooks 02-13-2004, 07:29 PM Someone asked where to find black web-rubber-stuff? You'll find it at Home Depot or other hardware stores. It's sold to put in tool boxes so tools won't rattle.
I believe it was in an older thread on this side that somebody actually posted templates to use to cut out the various sizes of liner. I'm looking for that now. If anybody knows where it is, I'd appreciate a link. Thanks!

That stuff is really stiff and hard. It's not really the kind of thing I'd use for the shelf liner, especially with things that scratch like sunglasses. I used to work at a pool that had it, very unpleasant for barefootedness.
arleyp 02-16-2004, 07:21 PM tonight I cut up some old mousepads I had laying around. These old hands don't cut as smoooth as they used to, but putting the bottom up makes a nice no slip surface.Color on one was black the other grey but I'm mostly grey /green colorblind anyway.
mix300 09-14-2004, 11:22 AM I will be the first to say the templates work great. But the rubbery liner stuff from target.. Well it was so so. I found that it was too ligh weight and tended to slip out. But chance I was at staples and found a black rubber like desk mat that I cut the pieces for the dash and cup holders and it works great. The cost of the matt was 24.00.

If this were any other place than America, I might be embarrassed at missing an inside joke. This being America, I cannot possibly be at fault. The fault must lie in the fact that too many people have posted on this thread for a guy coming at the end to read and understand all the in-jokes. Therefore the site itself is negligent for allowing such a condition to exist. The registered owner of the elementownersclub.com will be hearing from my lawyers (Pillage, Plunder, and Rapine LLC) shortly.

Hahaha!
(I must restrain myself from further comment. My lawyer has advised me to stay on topic from now on... well, in THIS thread at least!)
Does anyone else find that these "dash grips" have a hell of a time staying in place? I can't even lightly toss anything into any of my cubbies without that rubber lattace moving all over the place. What are you guys using to hold this stuff in place?
L-M-N-T 10-11-2004, 06:53 PM I used double-stick cellophane tape to get them to (sorta) stay. The foam type might work better but I don't want to have to deal with excessive adhesive residue.
Instead, I think I'm gonna take the boys out for ice cream and make sure they put theirs in every tray and cup holder. That should work.
hownowcb 10-18-2004, 06:14 PM I still have mine in place (never bothered with the console ones), but have also experienced the "how do you make them stay put when you remove something sitting on them?" dilemma. I'm pretty reluctant to "tape" them in place, but without them, anything in the dash trays slides out and onto the floor in the first corner. It's really only a problem for me in the dark, since I have black mats, and most everything I place in the trays is black as well.
Ultimately, I think I've settled on only keeping things in the dash trays that are gonna be there most of the time, and not need moving in and out of the car every time I drive it. :x
At least it's a tiny (like, microscopic) annoyance in an otherwise damn handy interior.
L-M-N-T 10-18-2004, 07:37 PM The double stick tape holds just enough to lifte objects off the foam pad without taking the pad with it. The tape doesn't really stick to the dash, so there isn't any residue. I also used the tan padding material instead of the black foam. It makes the trays and cup holders easily visible even in the dark and also makes it easy to see the items I put in the trays.
hownowcb 10-18-2004, 09:20 PM I would think choosing a non-black color for the material would serve only to help FIND the damn tray liner, once it either fell to the floor, or got flung somewhere else, stuck to whatever it was you were removing from the dash trays.
At least, that's my only issue.
http://multimedia.mmm.com/mws/mediawebserver.dyn?SSSSSSAzK12S4vTSevTSSSICp1V6666 q-
I used this and it works PERFECTLY.
I went to 2 home depots and came up short with a decent double sided tape to use (one that didnt have a ton of adhesive and one that didn't have enough). I went to Michaels (or Hobby Lobby depending on your area) and they had a nice selection. This stuff holds everything in place, but can be pulled up VERY easily. It holds up enough to throw things up on the dash and I have yet to see one slip even a fraction of a centimeter. But all you have to do is pull it up and it comes right off.
Anyone else use the 3m Double sided tape?
Here's a link to the tape on their site:

LEGO MY E 10-18-2004, 11:22 PM Ok, I have to ask... What is everybody putting on their dash that is so dang slippery anyhow? (and no comments from Colin or Kayakin' Dan!)

Someone should make non-slip inserts for the dash and cupholders out of GLOW-IN-THE-DARK material.

L-M-N-T 10-19-2004, 11:43 PM The side overhead bungee I am referring to is a 16" square bungee net w/ hooks that I got at the Dollar Tree (price:$ 1.00). I use it to hold a rolled up blanket for the kids, picnics, or whatever. We always had one or two in my wife's minivan and it/they came in handy a lot of times. I just hook one side of the net to the overhead handle, place the blanket in and hook the other side.

the color of the blanket said red, but the type of material makes it kinda match the SOP.
psschmied 10-20-2004, 12:55 PM I got tired of the rubber lattice material moving around and falling out of the rear cupholders every time I flipped up the seats.
I found a material at Ace Hardware that is used for entrance mats. It is a rubber-like vinyl with a closely-spaced rib on one side, and a coarse burlap pattern on the reverse. It is about 1/8" thick. Home Depot has a similar material.
The material can be cut with scissors to fit all the pockets, doesn't slide or fold under a shifing object. The apparent color is a dark charcoal grey, nearly black. It is available also in a dark brown.
This stuff stays in place without adhesive, and does a good job of stopping things from sliding and rattling in the trays. I cut the circles for the cupholders to be a little irregular. The irregularities hold the liners in place when I flip up the seats, and aren't visible.
hownowcb 10-20-2004, 06:21 PM Great tip, psschmied. If you could post name brands or pics, people would love you even more.
And L-M-N-T -- you know some of us were just having fun with your word choice. Those of us who've been around for ages run out of "fun" things to do with our specific, but otherwise useless knowledge of the names of most of the parts and pieces.

L-M-N-T 10-20-2004, 10:38 PM Oh, it's O.K. I wasn't... It doesn't matter ... I was just ... HUH? :?
bjave 10-20-2004, 11:39 PM Question - How do you keep them from blowing out the window or around the e? I did some test ones and also got some from a guy on ebay to see how well they'd work and the middle tray liner blew out the window the first time I used them. Are you tacking them down somehow or do you always have something on them?

Limping Lizard 11-26-2004, 09:30 PM Can someone who has the templates please email them to me at jbock@carolina.rr.com?
Past posts seem to have dead links.
Thanks!
dbail 11-29-2004, 04:48 PM I would very much like the templates also but all the links seem to be dead. Could somebody hook me up? Email to dbail103@yahoo.com Thanks a ton!!!
Estreak 11-29-2004, 07:04 PM For those of you who don't have the time to shop around or most importantly prefer liners that look really clean and functional. I'd suggest the liners from Murdock. It's a little expensive but well worth the price. I looked everywhere for liners on the web before finding these guys. Probably the best after market item I've purchase for my E. No more Ipod slipping!!!
http://honda.murdockindustrial.com/
hownowcb 11-29-2004, 09:14 PM I checked out my own links to the templates, and sure enough, since they were links, not the patterns themselves, mine are toast as well. But like the guy just before me noted, the do-it-yourself method is lame at best. Without double-sided tape, your liners will stick to whatever is in your trays more than to the trays themselves anyway. Since Murdock has become a site sponsor, I'm all the more in favor of saying they're the way to go in the first place. Either that, or just spill some soda pop in them accidently on purpose right up front, just to lend a little tackiness to them!
dbail 11-30-2004, 07:50 AM I appreciate the feedback on Murdock. I have no doubt they are quality and I do plan to order the cargo mat from them. However, I realy don't "need" the cup holders and personally don't think the cost/benifit is there. I did like the idea though of the templates and doing them myself. I believe I can come up with a bit better system than "double sided tape" to hold them down. I worked hard to get the E looking the way it does....I wouldn't do something corny like that ;)
So if someone does have the templates to send, cool. If not I can do without. Thanks
BriBoy01 11-30-2004, 07:58 AM I checked out my own links to the templates, and sure enough, since they were links, not the patterns themselves, mine are toast as well.
If I recall correctly Brendan was hosting the pictures on his server but it is dead right now. Perhaps a discussion with him will result in him emailing them to someone else to host for now, if he still has them that is.

They're not on my work laptop, they were on the dead server, so I can't mail 'em out. It's not clear if the disk is intact or not. Haven't had any time to work on it, sadly.

Gnu Blue Box 12-10-2004, 12:55 PM I have the templates and placed them on my web site so they will never go away again. I only have the PC version, if somebody has the MAC version then please mail them to me so I can post those as well.
You can find them at https://home.comcast.net/~gebben/Element/ElementTemplates.htm
This contains a link to a ZIP file with all the templates or you can grab individual cut-outs.
Note - the default viewer on my Windows XP machine uses 'Windows Picture and Fax Viewer' which does not scale the picture correctly. I used Microsoft Paint and it worked OK.

dorkshoe 12-30-2004, 07:18 AM Does anyone else have testimony about the quality of the Murdock noslip protectors? They seem pretty expensive, especially when you have to pay $10 extra to have them cut out flaps for the chair locks...
Does anyone know if the material they use can be bought retail?

Hondamade4dogs 12-30-2004, 10:42 AM make your own from shelf liner and it only cost $4.99 (makes cupholders, and dash mats...... If you want a floor mat go to Target and by a weight mat (Reebok $14.99)and cut it out yourself...Looks good and things don't slide around. :)
We have made some from our friends...you get about 6 feet of Shelf Liner
I guess if you want a big E in the middle, a stencil and white paint will work....
dorkshoe 12-30-2004, 11:57 AM I figure I spent 20 grand on my e, I can spend a couple hundred bucks on some quality materials that will last and keep it in good shape. I have a hard time getting my shelf liner in my kitchen to stay down when I pick up a can, I cant imagine it in my car. =P

orome 01-02-2005, 02:08 PM I got a rubbery pad for a few bucks in Target's car-accessory section that lays on the dash. Holds my money-clip and cellphone just fine.
wickedhuff 02-08-2005, 06:13 PM hey does anyone have those patterns still?? i keep clicking on the links and none of them will work - thanks.
Steel_city 02-20-2005, 02:14 PM I did the same thing...the day I bought the E...I knew from the test drive that I woukd have to do something when the salesman placed his sunglasses in one of those compartments and I took a hard right, and the glasses ended up sliding (and jumping) off the shelf and bounced off the door. I do admit...it was a pretty hard turn though....

Cappucino 03-03-2005, 09:16 PM by far the best no slip solution for the dash i've come across:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=284894&pfp=BROWSE
you can get them at circuit city for 5.99 a piece.
i bought three of them and lined each bin in front of the passenger. incredibly non-slip and you can rinse them off!
all for under $20.
JamesCzar 03-16-2005, 08:49 AM I would recommend the Murdock Liners over any DIY solution, as they're top notch quality products, cut to fit perfectly. But if you're going to go the DIY route, you might want to consider Duck's Easy Liner Solid (http://www.duckproducts.com/products/detail.asp?catid=5&subid=23&plid=502&PID=1597) which is available at Lowe's (http://www.lowes.com/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=37961-133-00-26394).
This liner is solid (duh) as opposed to the other liner materials, but is also lightweight, and thus suffers from the moving around problem. A great interim step, until your Murdock liners come in the mail (if you're that impatient).
woosterpuss 03-16-2005, 04:10 PM Hey everyone!
I purchased from ebay a complete set of non-slip mats. There were even mats for the cup holders in the rear seats. They are brilliant!! They look good and fit perfectly. Around $20 with shipping. The sellers ebay name is 'rjedro' He seems to have made some for other vehicles as well. There are other people on ebay selling similiar items, as well. But I liked the sound of his best. Check 'em out!
Lapiz & Topaz 04-05-2005, 08:53 PM I bought these no slip pads too-they work great! :)

bjave 05-30-2005, 04:03 PM And I was wondering why I've had such a surge in Tray liner sales... Thanks to all for the recommendations on our tray liners. They truely are the cat's meow on tray liners... and the reason they are a little costly is because each piece is die cut and each die was about $100 not to mention all the trial and error to get them EXACT. Nothing flimsy about them, they are perfect... not too soft, not too hard, not too light, not too thick... We got lucky on the material and it is the only material I would recommend.
Thanks for the complements all & drive safe-

Dirt Road Racer 07-31-2005, 04:20 PM Since nobody seems to know how to make templates on there own I'll tell you how I did it. Get a piece cardboard or construction paper and trim it till it fits usually I take and measure the diamiter and draw it out then cut it. Paper is cheaper than that drawer liner. I used an old folder for my template this also works when you do pipe fabrication or other metal fabrication.

Mr.Sandman 08-21-2005, 01:14 AM Cappy: Are these templates actual size? If so, I am going to trace them on my monitor with tissue/tracing paper, and use for cutouts. Thanks
BertRamme 10-09-2005, 10:52 PM Hi,
It is great that these templates were put on to the EOC site--Thank you.
After fiddling about trying to get them to my printer, I discovered that right clicking in a template brings up a menu that allows me to copy it to the clipboard. Then I opened Adobe Elements and pasted the template into it and saved it. I did this for each template. Now, at my leisure, I'll resize them to proper size and print them. I assume that any of the photograph editing programs will allow the same.
Again, thanks for the templates. That was a great idea. I might, however, go with Tony's set--his floor mats are awesome.

deckeda 12-05-2005, 10:30 PM As of tonight I can't see the "passenger left dash" image. I did also order Tom's no-slip but it's nice to have these also.
bjave 12-12-2005, 06:58 PM Just an FYI - about 3 weeks ago I had a gentleman picked up his Element Cargo Mat from our store - drove in in his Galapagos Green E... nice. He picked up the mat and we installed it, he was showing me his new rims etc... and I noticed that he did have tray liners... but they weren't from Murdocks!!!
sCReeeeeecccchhhhhh....
yes, I said it! And it made me smile. They were nothing but 1/8" black sponge rubber... I've got that here all day every day, very inexpensive, don't have a really great impression although much better than kitchen liner material.... and yes he paid about $16-$20 on ebay.
If you want to use the templates that are available online, and make your own - we do have it by the foot, something like $13 a foot - which a foot by full width should do just great... This could be an inexpensive alternative to getting the better materials.
Would like to mention though that die cut clean cutouts are the easiest and most convenient way to go... pull them out of the bag they come in... place them and you're ready to go. Highly recommended.
Thanks,
Tony

jimxenus 02-05-2006, 03:24 AM Well, I didn't realize my templates would be so popular. I'm sorry for the broken links in my earlier posts but here are the links again:

NYinNC 02-14-2006, 08:01 PM Just completed my own DIY version of this.. I read up on what materials others have used, and also looked at what was available on eBay, and from Murdock. Not really that impressed. Not saying that they aren't good products, it's just that I really wanted something RED to match our Rally Red exterior. After some brainstorming, I got the idea of using mouse pad material. Off to eBay I went, and waddya know, I found mouse pads really cheap. Got 20 red ones for less than $10 shipped!
I printed the templates, and cut them out. Then laid the templates over the mouse pads and cut them out with kitchen shears. I'm not a particularly crafty person, so I made a few mistakes (buy extra mouse-pads!), and my trim work could be neater, but.... all-told I used 4 mouse pads to do everything. I suggest getting at least 5, as you WILL mess at least one up.
Admittedly, the red match isn't exact, It probably ain't UV resistant, and it also isn't exactly "no-slip".. But I think it looks pretty neat, and that was my goal.
wankerklink 02-15-2006, 07:45 AM I like it, looks good.
memsahib 02-18-2006, 02:49 AM It's just too late to read 12 pages on this (Irv--remember how you love nurses? LOOK WHAT TIME IT IS--I just got in from work). If this product has already been mentioned, I'm sorry to repeat something already said.
My husband used to make furniture, and when doing finishing work he used a rubbery nonslip sanding pad that has an open weave. It comes in a Manly Black. In fact, I am going to put that Manly Black in Aub-E tomorrow morning.

Anyone seen pictures of the Elemmat liners in the smaller Black Diamond pattern? Wish they had it in the darker gray to go better with the blue/gray interior.

I haven't seen a picture, but I DO have that rear mat in my E as well as the matching tray and cup inserts in black.
siclmn 02-25-2006, 12:53 AM Good god I didn't read the whole 12 pages but what is it that you need to carry in the little cubby holes? Marbles? Food? What????
tango 02-25-2006, 01:24 AM Good god I didn't read the whole 12 pages but what is it that you need to carry in the little cubby holes? Marbles? Food? What????
In my case: All the time - Cell Phone, Sunglasses/Regular Glasses, iPod - and in floor console - Soda
Some of the time in various locations - CD Holder, Daytimer, Pens, Change, Lighter, Tire Gauge, Small Flashlight, Post-It Notes, Maps, Various Snacks, Leash, Receipts, Checkbook, Various Cords (for phone, iPod, iBook etc) - the list goes on......
If you take care of your dash anything you put in any of the cubbies flies into the floor at the 1st turn unless you have some sort of non-slip liner. And it's a lot easier to keep clean with the liners too.
GruvRegulator 03-08-2006, 04:21 PM I just picked up two of those "Sticky Mats" for the dash (above the center vents) and they work great!! I needed something that would hold my MP3 player in place. I've got a 5 year old creative labs 20 Gb Nomad player and it's about the size of a normal CD player; so it didn't really fit too well in the cubby spaces. I actually got 2 of those mats side by side and they work REALLY well at holding things in place. something to consider if you need things readily @ hand. I think they run 5 bux a piece @ Advance Auto Parts; well worth the investment in terms of frustration saved.
chozn4service 03-13-2006, 08:35 AM I had a SMM '03 Element and I did the same thing as well. I went to Dollar General or Everything Under A Dollar, pick up the shelf liner material and went to work. Being a neat freak I wanted it be be perfect in the area's of placement so I went to a website and saw were they offered these items for sale, clicked on their patterns and enlarged them to exact size and used them as my templates. I also placed some in my coin storage area to kill the sliding and noise from that and I also placed it in my overhead storage ben. This keeps anyone who may not have a NEED TO KNOW of whats in my storage area from seeing my iPod that may not be in its mount or anything else that I want to keep out of plain view. My first effort I used foil pressed into the voids to create my template. Still, this is a project I'll have to do again since I traded the SMM in Jan. for my '06 TRP.
WARNING! Be careful of cheap imitations of this material that is real thin or has the propencity to curl up on you because of its shipping form.

Those templates were exactly what I needed.
I bought some tool box liners from Sears and cut them using your templates. Now my cell phone and sunglasses don't slide or rattle around.
Many thanks!
chozn4service 06-03-2006, 09:34 PM I was good on the tray liners. I need some exact size in the dash trim. Then I can make my own, what I want and not trying pay for someones kid's college fund. ;-)
allelements 06-28-2006, 06:16 PM We've had our Element for just over a week and today I tried the no slip shelf liner and it looks fine. We used the double sided tape to start and should know soon if it will hold. Not being too computer literate I was unable to access the templates offered elsewhere on this site, so I made my own the best I could. We knew the Element would be a great vehicle for us and all the info here on the EOC site is very useful. Thanks.
netinman 07-03-2006, 01:23 PM Forgive me if this has already been suggested - I did not read every post in this thread. I used crafting felt with a self-adhesive backing and have been very happy with it. I know it doesn't seem like your typicaly non-slip surface, but it has just enough texture to it to keep things in place as long as you are not using your Element for drifting or slalom course racing.
I used newspaper to make the templates, cut the felt with a pair of scissors and then peeled away the backing and stuck the pieces into place. They've been there for more than a year now with no peeling. I just hit them with the vacuum anytime I clean out the car, otherwise they are maintenance-free.
I chose black to match my interior, but the stuff is available in several colors for about $1 a sheet, with a sheet being roughly the size of a standard piece of paper. I think I used two sheets to do all five spaces on the dash.
dgstrong 07-03-2006, 05:26 PM I bought a bunch of marked-down iGrip pads at Bed Bath and Beyond (I think they were 3 bucks a piece) and cut them to fit; they're heavy enough that they don't move (and the backside is just as grippy as the top). My phone and iPod now sit tight. They were originally meant for use on dashboards to hold an old-school iPod so it wouldn't slip around. It really works, and the color is sort of a translucent whiteish so it matches all the Elements.

Kattoon 07-17-2006, 01:26 PM I found the perfect material for the cubbies that matches the Kiwi E!
I purchased a Gaiam Yoga Mat that pretty well matches color of the Kiwi E. Since yoga mats are somewhat "sticky" and cushion-y they work out perfect in the cubbie holes.
I just cut them and installed them last night. I tried to take photos, but it was too dark. I'll try to take some photos today. Of course, since it was dark, I may have to trim some of my pieces a bit. I'm not really good at cutting circles!
I have enought mat left over that i'm going to see if I can make a mat for the back. I'll let everyone know how it goes.
Thanks for the patterns Guys!!
:D

thanks for these! just printed them and now have a weekend project!!
Farther 08-06-2006, 01:11 PM I just got back from WalMart with the black shelf stuff, printed out the templates and later today after chores I will work on the inserts.
Farther 08-06-2006, 05:23 PM Got the job done. The templates sure made it easier. Although I do have to say I question the anti slip doing any good in the cup holders. I see their value in the dash storage compartments if they don't blow out. I think the material will work best in the overhead bin.
Kattoon 08-06-2006, 05:49 PM Okay, so I'm lame at not posting my pics. Here are the pics of my "yoga mat" non slip pads...they match my BioBox perfectly! I've been using them for a couple of weeks now and I love it!
remilk 09-04-2006, 03:33 PM I have on 2006 EX. The first thing I tried for the tray pads were the the 'lattice-type' shelf liner that I got at Wal-Mart. The Targets in my area did not stock grey (the color I wanted). I used the templates found on a previous page and found that they were a little smaller than actual size.
I made my own templates, this took just a few minutes. I cut out the shelf liner. For me that shelf liner worked fine in the bottom of the cup holders and the tray between the front seats. For me, they did not work on the front trays as they were too light in weight. If nothing was on then, they flew around. However, when something was on them, they worked.
I was at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and saw the Super Size Sticky Pads [tm] by Handstands. I have used the regular size ones for my cell phone and satellite radio and have used their eGrips. II purchased 2 packages and cut these Sticky Pads [tm] to size to fit the dash trays. They work great. They are made by Handstands. www.handstands.com.
Enjoy!

Ok... here is the deal.

easygo 04-12-2007, 10:59 AM I found a placemat at Wal-Mart that has a waffle weave on both sides. You can see thru it. I found a dark forest green and used my scissors. It fits a snug as a bug. No more slipping and sliding.
TracyDP 04-12-2007, 07:34 PM I got my roll of orange liner for $1 at the Dollar Tree. I have some rubber cement and thought I'd place a couple of small gobs of it on the back of each one to help keep it in place. I would order them online or from Elemmat, but I really wanted the orange. They had 2 shades of orange, one a little lighter than my Tangerine and one a little darker. I opted for the darker red-orange one since the lighter one was a little too pastel for my taste. The darker one I think would perfectly match the SOP if anyone with that color is in the market for some, check your nearest Dollar Tree.
I just printed out the templates and hopefully this weekend I'll get to putting them in. I need to take some pictures of my new decals too and post them. I've been a slacker.

I agree about the cement. I used Scotch removable double-sided tape. Works great!
hownowcb 04-12-2007, 07:49 PM They had 2 shades of orange, one a little lighter than my Tangerine and one a little darker.
How weird is this? I noticed TracyDP's profile preggo pic last night and got to wondering who makes baby togs in orange!? :|
She'd better not have a daughter! Pink and Orange!? EWWW!
Blue and Orange if it's a boy might not be so bad, but maybe we all need to keep our eyes open for some "stylish" baby-wear?
TracyDP 04-16-2007, 12:39 AM Very cute. I am actually buying a camo/orange diaper bag (http://www.ebags.com/diaper_dude/camouflage_diaper_bag_with_orange_zippers/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=49474) if it's a boy, and the pink camo (http://www.ebags.com/diaper_dude/diaper_diva_pink_camo/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=52710)if it's a girl. I want to get a bag my husband won't be embarassed to carry around
I'm more interested in the functionality of a bag than the color, though both cute AND functional is a big plus  I am not a big fan of blue so if it's a boy there will probably be a lot of green/earth tones/purples going on.
rmschneider104 05-16-2007, 08:20 PM Great thread. I love this place. I'll be putting these templates to use as soon as I can run to the store. Thanks for sharing the knowledge!
TracyDP 05-30-2007, 07:29 PM I came in to print a new set of templates and just thought I'd mention that last time I went to the Dollar Tree they had about 10-12 different colors of the shelf liner that's perfect for the liners. One to match pretty much any E.
mid"E" 06-05-2007, 12:07 PM I decided to change my black liners out and add a splash of orange to the dash.:D  $1.00 (can.) for a pack of 4 sheets @ dollar store.
Slive Draver 06-07-2007, 05:23 PM I just made mine yesterday for my '07 EX, and although most of the templates were fairly accurate, they didn't *quite* fit each and every part. I had to mess around with certain pieces, namely the cupholder bottoms and the center floor tray. However, I'm INCREDIBLY happy with the result. I just did mine in black, although I like the look of those orange ones :) My car's the Alabaster Silver, though, so I dunno if it'd work well. I'm still looking around for a blue color similar to the lights on the dashboard...I think that would look even better than the black ones do!
Would it be worth it to just stick the pads in a scanner and scan them, rather than cut out paper templates and try to draw them? Seems like it'd be easier for others to make that way.
mjpd1 11-13-2007, 11:38 AM I've been looking for a solution to this problem as well. I'm glad to see others have tried the shelf-liner solution, and from the sound of it, that route would've been a waste of time. Just as well, as I couldn't find any black shelf-liner locally, and I wouldn't want it flying out the window!
I found the tray liner kit on the Elemmat website, and it looks fantastic! $30 was a bit more than I wanted to spend on the project, but I finally convinced myself that it would be worth it. Then I went to checkout and noticed that shipping and handling was $18...no thanks. Feel free to price your product however you see fit, but don't discount the product and then attempt to recoup that amount via exorbitant shipping fees...
NV_05_AWD 11-13-2007, 12:08 PM Here's a great buy !!! I bought these thinking if they are not the material I want I can always use them as templates for my own..... Turns out They work just as well as the $30.00 ones my sister bought for her SOP... $1.99 and FREE SHIPPING !
( I can already hear the belly aching.... " There not die cut !, I use this material... My employees this or that...." get over it ! )

Those are what I got as well. Just got them yesterday, in fact. They fit great and look good too. It's about 40* out at the moment so I haven't had my window down; can't attest to whether or not they fly around the cabin. I might stick a square of double-sided tape under each one just for safety's sake either way.

I agree. Just got mine in the other day and I can't believe how much quieter it is inside with out the boxes of tic-tacs rattling around on the dash.

Stop in at a hobby/craft store and look in their scrap-booking section for silicon "Glue-Dots", which are used for mounting pictures, etc. in scrapbooks. The come "dotted" on a rolled up, boxed, wax-paper strip Get the larger ones, peel a few off and put them on the back of the pads. Works great.
Flashbox 01-23-2008, 06:07 PM I printed out the pattern for all the non slip pieces, and when i printed them they did not come out correct. I am using the original pattern and I will then Scan each of my pieces into a pdf file and post it for download.
Flashbox 01-24-2008, 03:28 PM So the pdf file is to large to post here, but if you PM me i can send it to you via email. You should be able to print these out and cut them with no problems. Let me know if you would like them sent to you.

This is now an invalid item number at ebay.:-(
I bought these earlier this week and installed them today and found them to be very good fit. These are about 3mm thick neoprene with 'sharkskin wetsuit' texture. Nice.:-)
Quick ship, too.
Search "rjedro" as seller or search 'liner honda element' in ebay motor section.
$17 for 10 piece set with $4.40 for S&H and that is a LOT less than the elemmat set going for $30 for set and $18 more for shipping and handling.
Sorry, I cannot justify $18 for S&H on $30 product and I do not know how they can, either.
Can only see getting these when buying their floor set but I'm going with carpet from SCA.
IMHO.

I just got these liners in the mail today and dropped them in the E. Great quality and they fit perfectly. Worth every penny.
I think "rjedro" still has some available through eBay.

Fun Box 11-08-2008, 05:04 PM Sear carries by the sheet toolbox liners that are black and have a small circle pattern that matches the floor covering perfect. I did mine with one sheetand still have spare material.

SouthpawCF7 01-15-2009, 07:52 AM I have to agree that $30 is a fair price, but $18 to ship on a product that probably weighs less than a couple pounds? Come on. I ordered the liners through eBay, along with 2 bungees for the back of the seats, and with shipping it cost me only $31. Since I also went with custom deluxe carpets from SCA, the only way I'd consider the expensive cup liners is if they were thrown in for free. Should be getting both the cup liners/bungees and the deluxe black carpet all next week. Very excited!
E_BikeR 01-15-2009, 12:13 PM This grippy stuff works great: http://www.doityourself.com/invt/0033050
There is a ton of material per roll, and it is cheap enough to make mistakes. I found rolls of this in black locally, and it comes in lots of colors. Also used very small amounts of 100% silicone to stick it to the surface. If needed the silicone cleans up easily from the plastic interior materials.
I bought the drawer liner from Walmart and it didn't take long for a very good fit just sitting there, whittling away with a scissors :) I'm thinking of trying my yoga mat for a sticky pad to line the back with.....

I just got my black cup liners from rjedro today, after only placing my order in on Friday! Great seller to deal with, great quality liner, very excited not to hear anything roll around. For only 30 bucks, got all the liners, and picked up 2 extra bungee lines for the E, and that includes shipping! Highly recommended
Doug S 01-22-2009, 02:21 PM I did the same thing. Picked up some gray, no slip material in a roll at Wal-Mart. I used it for the dash, all the doors, and the rear compartments. Also the overhead compartment. It works perfectly, and I no longer hear everything shifting around as I drive.:)
marvin the marshen 02-16-2009, 05:20 PM I to finely did the no slip trick to my 07 E. Got some shelf liner at the $ store and put it on using the temp from a prev post . Thank You.
psschmied 04-09-2009, 09:09 PM I've had "non-slip" liners in all my compartments for some time. (I made them from a nice solid rubberized toolbox liner I got from Harbor Freight).
Recently I found a material that may appeal to those who are seeking a splash of color.
My local craft store sells foam sheets for kids cut and glue projects. The sheets come in a wide range of colors and are 12x18"x 3/16" thick The material is PVA foam. Sheets sell for about $1.. They aren't nearly as tough as Murdock's, but they are actually better at preventing sliding and they absorb vibration better. Hold them in place with double faced tape, blue tack or Elmers glue -it can be peeled off the hard plastic Element surfaces easily if need be.

psschmied 04-10-2009, 12:17 PM Thanks,
It's been quite a while since I've been here. Apparently the server upgrade process lost all my settings and profile info . . . wish I could have gotten away with that when I did server upgrades.
psschmied 04-10-2009, 08:57 PM JAMMR asked me for more detail on the liners I made for my 2004 E.
The liner patterns I could had scaling issues, so I re-digitized them, making 4 PDFs at full size. See attachments. Set your print Acrobat options to no scaling, 0.25" border. I cut everything inside the lines except the cupholder circles. I cut them outside the lines for a snugger fit. The pieces are distinct enough that I didn't bother to label them.
After experimenting with the beaded liner material I thought it was too flimsy. It blew around and fell out of the rear cupholders. I didn't want to glue them in place in what was then a new car.
The second experiment was with Ace Hardware Vinyl Ribbed Matting - they sell it by the foot, 27-36" wide in black ribbed nylon entrance mat. A photo showing back and front on top of the carpet material I've used is attached. The back has a nice embossed texture like coarse burlap. I made that my visible side. They fit snugly, didn't fall out of the rear seats, but the material was too hard. The small things I carry in the vibrated audibly at speed.
The material I like best is an industrial quality toolbox liner from Harbor Freight, < http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=90982 > It's a rubberized fabric cloth material between 2 layers of rubber and is pretty tough. A closeup of an installed cupholder liner is attached. I'll put photos of the rest in my profile library.
The colored PVA sheet material can be found with a Google shopping search for <Creative Hands Foam Sheet 12"x18" > I've worked with it for other projects, but not liners. It's as cushiony as the rubberized toolbox liner, not quite as durable but should work well. If I were going to use it, I would laminate two thickness after cutting using a fabric cement for the cupholders the extra thicknes and slight cutting imperfections should hold them n place.
FYI, if you are going to stick liners down, use something water based like PVA glue (Elmers white glue) or blue tack, not silicone adhesive. Silicone makes too an aggressive a bond - I've spent hours trying to get it off anodized aluminum (which is harder than the plastics of the Element), and the only way I could get it of was with abrasion. I had to have the aluminum acid etched and re-anodized afterwards.

If you're refering to the ones posted above,I remove mine if I plan on using a vacuum anywhere near them. As for keeping them from moving around, they actually have a bit of weight to them, that keeps them in place.

Yeah they don't move around a whole lot but just remember to take the rear cup holder ones out before you put up the seats.....I couldn't find one for weeks when I did that lol
mmaxon888 08-17-2009, 03:18 PM I bought a kind of pad that sticks on a smooth surface. It's removable, and I applied it to the flat part above the center vents. I can lay a cell phone, wallet, whatever on the sticky pad. You have to wipe off any dust occasionally, but it's great. I think I paid $5 or $6 at Wal-Mart for it. It's about 4" x 6".
mmaxon888 08-17-2009, 03:26 PM I read backward and noticed another owner also used the sticky pad.

jerseymike68 09-15-2009, 12:59 PM Nice information
Clanker 01-13-2010, 09:55 AM will try using the template posted , just got material from lowes.
Deadguy 07-06-2010, 05:59 PM I know the center console if different now with the cooler etc... But are the rest of the dash pockets etc the same? Just wondering..
buttermilk 07-06-2010, 07:34 PM I covered my dash pockets with dark gray carpet from a scrap I had left over from doing the floor in a boat. Looks like it came from the factory that way. I trimmed pieces of paper until I got a perfectly shaped template and then cut the carpet and used double sided carpet tape to hold the pieces in place.
HI Box 08-30-2010, 01:32 PM I was looking at the one on ebay and I'm also wondering if the dash tray changed from 08 to 10.
Started mine today. I ordered sponge neoprene with adhesive from Amazon.com., $24 incl. s/h. Looked at set on EBay, but since I replaced my console with the 2010 cooler, I didn't need some of the inserts offered. Templates did not match, so created my own using paper. Will let you know how it works out.
Here's how it looks. Had to put "nubs" to prevent items from moving around (you can barely see them in the last photo). I made them with a paper hole cutter. Material is kinda soft, so cant put anything sharp on them. Will see how long they last. May not be good in the long run.
TN3M3L3 06-03-2011, 03:06 PM Well I sucked them up in the vacumn and out in the trash.
Does anyone know where the template link is? I have an 05 ex
/thanks

Try page 14 and page 15. They are there.
Rob Dobbs 06-16-2011, 05:35 AM You can make your own templates by simply taking a piece of paper, place it over the area you want to template and run your fingernail around it. Cut that shape, test fit, make any alterations in size if need be and you have the template. For circles anything the correct size will work such as a lid or drinking cup. I seem to use the tops of spray paint cans often but the top of a pringles can may be a better size.
Avoid gluing anything down. Someone already mentioned double stick tape but I would use some buytl. In place of that, if you have a magazine that comes with something stuck to a page, you can remove that sticky stuff (clear butyl) and use that. Not much is needed, just enough for the ends on the cup holders. Thats the only area ive ever had an issue with as the rubber material will stick to anything damp such as a drink or water bottle. That little bit of butyl will hold the material in place but also allow it to be removed for cleaning or spills.
With the self made paper template it took me maybe 5 minutes to make the dash and SC console inserts by hand.
beledi 06-16-2011, 07:44 AM Ok... here is the deal.
:-)I got black at Wal Mart when I got the E Her name is the Tardis even though she is Shoreline Silver Mist color. I love the Dr. Who series.)

I bought some cheap shelf liner, made my patterns and cut them out and wound up hating them. Gladly gave the $20 to buy the Ebay ones and love them - higher quality material and much better cut. Live and learn.
