I've been looking all over the internet for the right software. I've been getting my information from http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/userguides/114699.php
I can make regular SVCDs using VCDEasy and TMPGEnc, but the instructions talk about other software to get the 5.1 sound. So far I either can't find the software or it doesn't work.
If anybody has any information please tell me.

P.S. I'm starting with a WMV video file and a MPEG2 video file created with TMPGEnc.

You do know that this is a Honda Element Forum, right? :D

WMV and MPEG2 as your source files rule out any compatability beyond stereo sound. Those compression formats do not allow for surround, unless I'm horribly mistaken.

Unless you are ripping directly from a DVD to a DVD, which usually has a separate audio track for the different Surround sound formats, the best you'll get is stereo sound.

Would I have to convert it to an AVI file? If so what program would you recommend?

nope, the problem is not solved by converting the file between formats.

basically, the quality at which the video was ripped in the first place is the best possible format you'll get. no amount of conversion will add quality- in fact converting usually makes the picture/sound quality deteriorate.

the only way i can think you can possibly get surround sound of any kind is on a direct dvd-to-dvd rip, or with some very specialized software with a propietary file format. i'm sure that once the video is in a popular format (wmv, mpg, avi, etc etc), the best you can possibly do is stereo sound.

i'll try to answer your questions to the best of my ability- i've never personally copied a dvd, but i'm very familiar with video editing and popular formats. (and a miniscule amount of the theory behind them)

OK if you ask this question here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=26 you will get the answer. The guys on AVS forum are experts, but they don't know anything about the Element.

I just put my request on that forum. I hope someone knows how to do it.
