: 'squito repellant for dogs?

I'm planning a trip to northern Wisconsin next week and last time we were up there at this time of year, the mosquitoes made a meal of the poor dog. I had used an all natural thing that somebody had recommended. Unfortunately, it didn't do any good. Does anyone have a good repellant they use for their dog that wouldn't kill the dog if he licked himself?

Not only make a meal of a dog, but dogs get heartworm from mosquito bites.

Maybe your vet or google would kno.

Thanks for responding. He's on regular heartworm medication as a precaution, but last time he was so bitten he had to get a cortisone shot to stop him from scratching and licking himself raw. The stuff my vet recommends isn't very effective. I found a bunch of things with a Google search, but I was hoping that people might have actual experience with something they'd recommend. Like some people are mosquito magnets, I guess he is, too. He uses Frontline, for fleas and ticks, but bugs just surround him.:-| I think my next step is to call a bunch of different vets and see what they recommend.

k9 advantix is supposed to stop mosquitoes...it gave our dog an isolated rash though so we're not using it anymore - it did seem to do the trick while we were camping though. you can always buy a single dose and give it a try and if they get a sore you can always stop using it. it is supposed to last for a month.

Skin So Soft by avon is what I use on myself and my horses....might want to look into toxicity before trying it tho.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've already put Frontline on him this month, so I'll have to wait to try the Advantix, but I'll give it a shot. I'll definitely look into the skin so soft, too. It hadn't occurred to me that you might be able to use that one on animals. I'll get the ingredients and ask the vet.

Thanks, again.

I found this http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/product_family.asp?family%5Fid=1539&gift=False&RefCode=06840034

It is for horses but maybe you can call the company and ask if it could be used on your dog. I have a 150lb mastiff and will probably give this a try.

I suspect that you need some sort of a dipping solution. Thirty six years ago when I worked in Chibana Okinawa as a German Shepherd Sentry Dog Handler, we used a dip with Malathion (http://www.vspa.com/k9/malathion.htm). Though, I suspect that they have something better now.

Use advantage on my cats. Seems to work well.

Was in Manitowoc, Wis earlier this summer. Seems like now would be a really nice time to be in the North Woods. (Except for the mosquitoes that is...)

Best of luck.

I think Adams Flea spray also works on knats and misquetos
